Midland Metro BirminghamCity Centre extensionMidland Metro light rail system lies at the heart of our plans to change how people access Birmingham city centre. By extending the current line from its terminus at Snow Hill to serve the newly created Gateway at New Street station we will bring about greater connectivity across the city centre and help to improve access to key retail and tourism areas such as the Jewellery Quarter. Kicking off the project was work to carry Midland metro over the Great Charles Street Queensway to connect into the viaduct already built on the Ballymore development site adjacent to Snow Hill. The bridge beams went in over a series of weekends in November and work will continue on this until late spring. Other works around the city will start during 2011 which will make way for the construction of the metro route. This on street construction in the city centre is due to start in 2012.

We will also be looking at buying new longer trams which carry more people (up to 200) and these will operate on the whole route between Wolverhampton and the New Street gateway terminus. Work will also take place to the depot at Wednesbury to extend the maintenance shed for the new longer trams.

It is anticipated that the region’s economy will be given a boost of over £50 million from this project and create over 1,300 jobs. The metro itself will add 40 jobs and another 300 during construction. Work is underway to bring this route into operation by 2015.
