Photoshop gives you many choices when it comes time to add or mod-ify the colors of a document-paintbrushes, airbrushes, and drawingtools, just to name a few. Two little-used but powerful tools are theStroke and Fill Commands. Both the Stroke and Fill commands workwith selection tools. For example, you may want to create a uniquestroke around an object, or fill a specific area of a document with acolor or pattern. If that's the case, then the Stroke and Fill commandsare the best and fastest ways to perform those operations.

Creating Spot ColorChannels

Create a Spot Color ChannelOpen a document.

If the document is not in the CMYKformat, click the Image menu, point to Mode, and then clickCMYK to convert it.

Create a selection, defining thearea for the spot color. Use any ofPhotoshop's selection tools, including the Type Mask tool.

Select the Channels panel.

Click the Channels Options button, and then click New Spot Channel.

Click the Color box, and thenselect a color.

If you need a specific press color, such as one from the PantoneMatching System, click the ColorLibraries button in the ColorPicker, select from the availablecolor sets, and then click OK.

The Name box displays the nameof the selected color.

Enter a Solidity value (0% to 100%)to view the spot color at a specificopacity (Solidity does not affectpress output).

Click OK.

212 Chapter 8

When you work in the world of service bureaus and printing presses, there are certain things you must do to create an accurate printed doc-ument. The color mode of the image will be CMYK, and the output ofthe document will most likely be in a format designed to create colorplates, such as DCS2.0 (Desktop Color Separations). In addition, youmay want to apply a spot color to the image. Spot colors instruct aprinter to apply a specific color to a specific portion of a document. Forexample, you may want to create a book cover jacket, and you wantthe author's name in a specific Pantone Blue, or you may want to applya varnish to a portion of a brochure. Whatever the case, you will needto create a spot color channel.

Using the AutoContrast and AutoColor Commands

The Auto Contrast command adjusts the tonality of the image withoutimpacting color. The Auto Color command adjusts the tonality and colorof the image by ignoring channels and looking directly at the compositeimage. The automatic color commands receive their adjustment cuesfrom information within the active image, including any erroneous colorinformation. For example, if the image contains a large border (typicallywhite), the auto commands will factor that information into the correc-tion of the image. It's best to correct any dust or scratch problems andcrop out any borders before applying the Auto Contrast and Auto Colorcommands.

214 Chapter 8

Through interactive feedback using a Histogram, the Levels adjustmentgives you live information about the tonal values in the active image. It'san excellent tool to perform overall tonal adjustments and some colorcorrection. The Auto Tone command on the Image menu or Auto buttonin the Levels dialog box is considered a quick-fix color adjustmentwhich, in some cases, works just as well as manually correcting color. In fact, it includes smoother histograms. However, the average photousually has more than one simple problem, so it's usually best to manu-ally adjust an image. Since the Auto Tone command or Auto button reliessolely on information contained within the actual image-informationthat is sometimes inaccurate-it's usually best to correct the imagemanually or use a preset level. For example, you can use a preset levelto make the midtones brighter or darker, or increase the contrast.

Photoshop's Exposure adjustment is primarily designed for performingtonal adjustments to 32-bit High Dynamic Range (HDR) images, but itworks with 8-bit and 16-bit images as well. The Exposure adjustmentchanges an image using a linear color space (gamma 1.0)' nottheimage's current color space. When used with HDR images, it gives youthe ability to draw out details of the image that otherwise might becompletely lost within the shadows and highlights.

To save settings, click the PresetOptions button, click Save Preset, type a name, and then click Save.

Click OK.

216 Chapter 8

The Curves adjustment lets you adjust tonal ranges in the image withoutchanging image exposure. Curves is an excellent adjustment method forlightening the dark shadows of an image to bring out detail. or for creat-ing special effects like solarization. To make it easy to use, Photoshopprovides presets to use and save. The Color Balance adjustment letsyou change the highlight, shadows, and midtones of an image sepa-rately. The Color Balance dialog box performs linear adjustments tocolor; therefore, it's a good tool for correcting common tonal problems, such as those caused by using film balanced for daylight indoors andgetting a green cast to the image. The Brightness/Contrast adjustmentchanges an image by an overall lightening or darkening of the imagepixels. While good for special effects, its linear way of changing animage's brightness and contrast do not lend themselves well to photorestoration. Curves and Levels are much better for this type of work.

For Your Information

Understanding Brightness and ContrastThe Brightness/Contrast adjustment performs linear adjustments toan image. For example, moving the brightness slider to the right willincrease the brightness values of all the pixels in the image equally.Since photographs are not linear in nature, the Brightness/Contrastadjustment is not recommended for use on images. Instead, use aLevels, or a Curves (non-linear) adjustment for photographs, and aBrightness/Contrast adjustment for clip art, text, and non-photographic images.

The Hue/Saturation adjustment gives you individual control over animage's Hue, Saturation, and Brightness, and its Colorize option letsyou apply an overall color castto an image, similar to a duotone effect.Hue gives you the ability to change the image's actual calor, Saturationcontrols the amount of color, and Brightness determines how bright thecolor is based on its Hue and Saturation. The Desaturate commandremoves all the color from an image, which preserves the Hue andBrightness values of the pixels, and changes the Saturation value tozero. The result is a grayscale image.

The Channel Mixer adjustment is a great way to adjust individual colorchannels, or for making an image conversion to black and white. TheChannel Mixer adjustment modifies the selected output channel byblending it with a mix of the existing image color channels. Since colorchannels record information using shades of gray, you're essentiallyadding or subtracting grayscale information, not color information likewhen you use the Selective Color adjustment. That's what makes theChannel Mixer adjustment ideal for converting images into grayscale. To the make it easy to use, Photoshop provides presets to use andsave.

Using the Thresholdand PosterizeAdjustments

Use the Threshold Adjustment

Open an image.

Click the Image menu, point toAdjustments, and then clickThreshold.

Drag the Threshold slider to theright or left to change the point atwhich black and white aredefined.

For example, setting the thresholdslider to a value of 75 creates animage where all pixels with abrightness value of 75 or less areblack, and all pixels with a value of76 or higher are white.

Click OK.

Use the Posterize Adjustment

o Open an image.

• Click the Image menu, point toAdjustments, and then clickPosterize.

Drag the slider to select a Levelsvalue (2 to 255) to define thenumber of colors used.

Lower values produce less colorsand more visual contrast.

The Threshold adjustment reduces an image into only black and whitepixels, based on their original brightness levels. It's useful for locatingthe darkest and lightest pixels in an image, or for creating some great-looking black and white special effects. The Posterize adjustment cre-ates a simpler image by reducing the number of colors. It's useful forcreating an image with a clip art look, or for reducing the number ofcolors in preparation for output to the web.

The Shadows/Highlights adjustment lets you quickly correct the prob-lems associated with the underexposed and overexposed areas of animage such as deep shadows or bright highlights. In addition, theShadows/Highlights adjustment makes quick work out of images thathave really dark shadows or overexposed areas by adjusting the prob-lem areas without changing the midtones in the image. For example, theadjustment works well to correct subjects photographed with the lightsource coming from behind (backlit, or subjects shot in bright, overheadlight. However, this type of adjustment will not work on images in theCMYK color mode.
