Good for Chulha, that guy was into blogging

Good food....decent prices...and gr8 service I started taking tiffins from Chulha in my office around 3 weeks

back. Very easy to register through thr website www.chulha.co.in and they actually gave me a call on the second day and started delivering almost immediately in my office! The food has been good and the quantity adequate for more than one person. I have gone for the roti-only option and get tawa chapattis, 2 vegetables (gravy & non-gravy), dal & salad...all for 35 bucks in tiffins delivered direct to office!

Next, I called and was told that the menu for lunch & dinner is diff.....so m planning to go for dinners at home...

Bargaining Power of Suppliers

In this case as their suppliers for resources are basically the vegetables vendors and non veg suppliers, and since

existence of large number of suppliers in the market decreases their bargaining power in term of prices

because they always can shift to alternate vendor in case price differentiation.

Bargaining Power of Buyers

Here also buyers bargaining power is not so much in terms of pricing of food because they are ready to pay even a

slight premium price for good and hygienic food.

New Entrant

It is easy to enter in this business as it does not require much of capital investment and even does not require professional /qualified people to carry on operation like

cooking even females at home can cook and do business.

Threat from substitute products

There is no such substitute for food as this is the basic requirement for survival.

Competitive Rivalry within an Industry

Competition exist in this business from other tiffin service providers and local stalls but chulha has its own

competitive advantage in delivering superior quality and different varities of food at reasonable price .

Page 13: Adesh and Nishant's Chulha

Strengths

Good quality hygenic food ,owner themselves responsible for quality control.

Different varities of food served to avoid boringness to have same food every day

Low operational cost for this business as a result they provide food at reasonable prices.

Non kannada cook to make food especially for the non kanaddan as they are the main clients.

Great feedback mechanism to understand the actual taste and preference of the customers and provide them food accordingly

The website is the main marketing tool.

Weakness

Constrained to Bangalore only

Opportunities

Expansion to other cities.

Introduce regional food for the locals as well as non locals.

Target the festive season food like sweet dishes.

Can supply food to all corporate, food court or even can set up restaurant chains.

Threats

Competition from different tiffin service providers and from local food stalls.

From recession effect on corporate as they tend to cut the allowances like food allowances given to employees to minimize cost.

Unfamiliar technology.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSIONS :

Q1) Do you think this is a viable business?

Ans : Yes it is a viable business.

Page 15: Adesh and Nishant's Chulha

Q2) Are there any changes you would like to introduce in their business model?

I. Home delivery can be introduced

II. Should expand to other metropolitan cities as well like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai.

III. Tie up with hostels, PG’s, Corporate Offices, Business Schools and Engineering colleges, which are abundant in Bangalore/. E.g. college canteen

IV. Can use the website for taking online orders for food supplies and accomodation. Both Adesh and Nishant being MBAs as well as IT professionals can easily work it out.

V. Should give franchisee to local housewives to do this business and promote Chulha in the areas where Chulha itself could not deliver food in time .

VI. Should provide catering services to several parties and functions and even to the Airlines and Railways.

INDIA INFOLINE• Nirmal Jain comes from a family of risk

takers.

• His forefathers, who were commodity traders in Rajasthan, made huge profits at one time and went nearly bankrupt at another.

• The IIM-Ahmedabad graduate made the biggest gamble of his life in 1999, when he was running Probity Research, a stockmarket research firm with revenues of nearly Rs 1 crore.

• A steady but small business was no fun. So, he took the huge volumes of research data, their chief source of revenue, and put it on the Internet. Thus, India infoline was born in May 1999.

Page 18: Adesh and Nishant's Chulha

• Within months, India Infoline was getting millions of dollars in funds.

• Jain wanted the company to move from research into e-broking, something no one else in India was offering then.

Page 19: Adesh and Nishant's Chulha

Suddenly, all the funding disappeared, the dotcom business was stigmatized and, worse still, the stock market also took a downturn.

His business was struggling to survive, and it was the darkest time of his life.

But Jain was not ready to give up just yet.

He drastically scaled down operations and stripped the profile of all frills, focusing on financial services and e-broking.

He went without a salary for nearly a year-and-a-half, trying to keep his company afloat.

Things finally began to look up in 2003, when the market went positive.
