DISCOVER THE WORLD OF THE MAYANS

The mystical Mayans found a home near the glorious beaches and jungles in the Yucatan Peninsula. We invite you to discover the master works of these impressive geniuses who left us timeless witnesses of a civilization devoted to knowledge, science and astronomy.

TULUM Tulum was built around 1200AD as the Mayan civilization declined and lacks the elegance of earlier structures. For instance, whilst earlier Maya buildings typically had vaulted roofs, the ones in Tulum were often flat and have consequently fallen much sooner. The layout of the site is unusually structural, with parallel streets surrounded by walls originally five meters high and seven meters deep. Most of the walls can still be seen; indeed the present day entrance to the ruins is

as it was in ancient times, through a gate on Western side of the fortifications.

There are three major structures of interest: El Castillo (the tower which dominates the area and is perched on the cliff edge), The Temple of the Frescoes and The Temple of the Descending God.

Tulum is located 51 miles (80 kilometers) south of Maroma. The tour lasts Approximately four hours, from the moment you leave Maroma until your return. The site is open between 8am and 5pm

COBA

Coba was a thriving city from around A.D.600, although it had been settled for around a thousand years before this date. Its name means "ruffled waters", derived from the five lakes in the surrounding area, and it is one of the oldest Mayan settlements on the peninsular. It also has the highest pyramid in the area and the greatest concentration of sacbeob (Mayan roads

constructed from stone), both of which suggest a major city - yet the ruins were not discovered until the late 19th century. Even today, only a small fraction of the many structures in this vast site have been excavated and this, together with the remoteness and jungle setting, contribute to the feeling of exploring new ground. An interesting feature of Coba is the convergence of around forty sacbeob, built by the Maya, one of which has been traced a distance of 60 miles. Each sacbe was constructed with stones to a height of one to two meters and then covered with white mortar. Their purpose is puzzling as this civilization had no wheels, but may have been built for religious processions and pilgrimages. Coba is located 51 miles (80 kilometers) south of Maroma and an additional 27 miles (44 kilometers) inland. The tour lasts approximately 6 hours from the moment you leave Maroma until your return. CHICHEN ITZA Chichen Itza is linked to the Mayan interests of astronomy. On spring and autumn equinox the shadow of the sun plays on the stairs and causes the illusion of a snake going down the pyramid in the direction of the cenote. The temple at the top of the pyramid has carvings of Chac, the rain god, and Quetzalcóatl, the serpent god. This

temple was built over the top of an original structure and at limited times of the day (check at the entrance) you can enter the old temple via a passage under the northern stairway. Inside you’ll see a sculpture of a jaguar, painted red and with jade eyes, exactly as it was discovered.

The Great Ball Court is the largest of its kind in the Maya world. The game itself involved two teams, each able to hit the ball only with elbows, wrists or hips, and the purpose was to knock the ball through one of the stone hoops on the walls of the court.

The cenotes (sinkholes) were very important to the Mayans as their main source of water and had great religious significance. There are stories of sacrificial victims being thrown into the Sacred Cenote, along with offerings of treasure. Chichen Itza is located 124 miles (200 kilometers) west of Cancun. The tour lasts approximately eight hours from the moment you leave Maroma until your return.

EK BALAM

Located just north of Valldolid, this is a yet little known site and therefore never overwhelmed with tourists. Ek-Balam in the Mayan idiom stands for “black - jaguar”, When the Mayan abandoned Ek-Balam, the site became hidden beneath the dense low-lying jungle. As with all of the Mayan pyramids, these

ruins were discovered when archeologists noticed a group of hills with trees and brush growing out of

them. Carefully excavating the mounds, they uncovered buildings and artifacts which had remained hidden for hundreds of years.

After the visit to the arqueological site, our expedition will continue towards Valladolid, a little Mayan town located half-way between Merida an Cancun. Valladolid is a small quaint town that has preserved its special colonial flavor. The majority of the townspeople still use typical Mayan clothing, Mayan women typically sit on one side of the Plaza’s park where they display and sell their handicrafts, which include hand- embroider dresses and blouses, place mats and tablecloths.

NATURAL RESERVE OF SIAN KA’AN

Get intimate with the mysteries of the Mayan Riviera. Spend an amazing day

exploring the beauty of Sian Ka’An (in Mayan: “where the sky is born”). This

paradise was the first established biosphere reserve in Mexico. It is currently a UNESCO World Heritage site and its protection remains a high priority for

Mexico.

The reserve is home of 800 different plant species and provides a habitat for 350

species of birds, as well as jaguar, puma,

ocelot, spiders and howler monkeys,

crocodiles and many types of turtles.

El Camaleón Golf Club

At the Mayakoba resort, managed by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is his latest masterwork. The 7,039-yard layout is unique - not just to México but to the entire golfing kingdom.

The course bends through three distinct landscapes - tropical jungle, dense mangroves, and oceanfront stretches of sand with holes bisected by massive limestone canals. He's even incorporated a cenote, a massive, ancient cavern common to the area, into the heart of the opening fairway.
