ACMP Global Standard Development Update

Three years ago the ACMP Board of Directors, through the efforts and interests of the membership, held a world café exercise around the need and desire for a standard and certification program for change management. The result of the exercise was a framework for standards and certification. A group of thought leaders evaluated the framework, presented it to the members and allowed members and non-members to provide input from the change management community. The Board then conducted a competitive procurement with six companies and in September of 2012 The Communicators were selected to develop the standard. In October 2012 The Market Analysis Survey was conducted to validate our findings and to determine the current level of interest for the development of a standard and certification program. At the ACMP 2013 Global Conference the findings were reinforced and validated moving to the next step, which is where we are now, establishing a Standards Working Group.

Dear ACMP Members and Friends, Would you like to be recognized as a change management practitioner who is part of a thriving profession? As a leader or manager in your organization with a remit to increase business success, do you see change management as a critical discipline? Our market research has identified a global need to increase focus on the people side of change and help change practitioners; change agents, leaders and managers of change get support and achieve recognition through an established profession. A profession arises when any trade or occupation transforms itself through "the development of formal qualifications based upon education and examinations, the emergence of a regulatory body with the authority to admit members and hold them accountable to a code of ethics and professional conduct.”

Our commitment is to complete that transformation which will distinguish change management as a profession. Just as accountants, architects and doctors are part of a profession, we believe that change management is sufficiently business critical and complex to deserve recognition as a profession.

The Hallmarks of the Profession

The three key items to establish any profession are a professional association, a standard and a certification against that standard, and a professional code of ethics and professional conduct.

ACMP is committed to being methodology agnostic and focusing on the core practices of change management. Once the standard is complete we will be able to offer a certification. A certification is a formal qualification based upon education, experience and an exam against the standard. A certification is in contrast to certificates, which are currently provided through many excellent training organizations. When you are part of a change management education session, you receive a certificate of completion, which documents your learning. In contrast, a certification demonstrates competency by testing against a defensible set of standards.

This process of establishing a profession defines what change management professionals expect from themselves and the community of change practitioners, agents, leaders, and managers around the world. When we hold ourselves to a higher standard it gives credibility and enhances the repute of change management. The code of ethics and professional conduct will preserve our integrity and instill confidence in the emerging profession of change management.

2

Letter from the President Continued from Page 1 To accomplish this goal we are*:

1. An established professional association. 2. Completing a global standard of change management. 3. Collaboratively creating a code of ethics and professional conduct.

ACMP recognizes that change management is a complementary discipline to other professional disciplines that work together to bring about change. It is our goal to partner with complementary professional organizations that focus on project management, program management, organizational development, business process re-engineering/operational excellence, human resources, training, communication and a range of other disciplines. Our collective goal is to achieve success from our change initiatives - this is the foundation for a healthy inter-disciplinary relationship. As we build recognition for the change profession we will raise the profile of the change management discipline, which benefits everyone who is part of the change community. This is not an easy task but we are confident that together with you and our many complementary change organizations, we can collectively make it happen. Thank you for being part of the Association of Change Management Professionals. Our value proposition is simple: the ACMP aims to increase your value by providing a wide range of professional development and networking opportunities, while advancing the discipline of change management around the world. Whether you are new to change management, an experienced change management practitioner, a professional from one of the many complementary disciplines to change management or a leader or manager who understands the strategic value of effective change management, we need your help to achieve our goal of establishing change management as a profession. Kindly yours, Donna Brighton ACMP President ACMP Member Voice

“A global standard provides change practitioners – who tend to be a combination of knowledge experts, effective influencers and “dot” connectors – with a consistent framework of what “most

experts would do in most situations.

As the standard further accelerates how change management is more and more formalized, practitioners will gain a better understanding of the skills and expertise they will need to be

successful. Together, these forces will contribute to a new business environment where initiatives are expected to be achieved and sustained.”

The ACMP Standards Working Group (SWG) efforts have officially launched and made terrific progress since the spring. Following the ACMP 2013 Global Conference, the SWG officially kicked off the nomination and vetting process to down select the core, working group. Under the leadership of the SWG Chair (pictured right), Vice Chair, Secretary, and Technical Editor (all pictured below) and in collaboration with The Communicators, we are pleased to say that there is a strong representation of our membership selected to execute this important initiative. The SWG met in Dallas, TX in early August to formally define the scope of the standards definition, develop sub groups (based on the domain areas defined by the Practice Analysis Task Force) and initiate the development of the standards. Since meeting, the subgroups have been working diligently to complete an initial draft by late October, which will go through a unification and editing process and be presented for consideration for public commentary beginning in early December. We look forward to a broad and diverse engagement as we continue on this journey!

A thriving membership organization requires a balanced mix of new members and returning members. New members inject energy into an organization, while returning members validate the organization’s vision and mission. Over the past year ACMP has welcomed over 1600 new and returning members to our global change management community, with a tip of balance to new members over returning members, which is typical and acceptable for a young organization in growth stage. To ensure our dynamic membership community continues to thrive and we achieve balance in new and returning members in our makeup, we are focusing our attentions on understanding the needs and expectations of our members. We know we have the foundation for membership right. Research indicates an individual’s decision to join is less oriented toward an individual program, product or service offering, but rather on the assessment of perceived value generated for a community of interests who share a common bond. As Donna Brighton, ACMP President, shares in her article, ACMP’s unwavering commitment to establish the change management profession is the foundation of that common bond. What we want to better understand is, what are the additional benefits of membership that will set ACMP apart from the rest? Earlier this month the Membership Task Force developed and sent their first Member Satisfaction Survey to over 600 new and renewing members to measure satisfaction and capture feedback on new programs or services. In addition, we will be reaching out to those members whose memberships are up for renewal and ask a similar set of questions. This is just one of several feedback loops and touch points we are implementing to engage and understand your membership needs to better your experience. Don’t be surprised if you receive a telephone call or email introduction from a Board Director, Membership Task Force Member or myself. We want to hear from you and let you how much we appreciate your confidence in ACMP. What we learn will foster and enhance ACMP’s change management community bond – one member at a time. Linn J. The Pacific North West (PNW) Chapter is a locally focused, globally inspired network of change management professionals and learners. The chapter creates connections for the purpose of increasing the capability and capacity of individuals and organizations to evolve and advance the response to the ever-increasing pace of change. In the past year, membership has grown from 40 to over 280 members strong! The Chapter evolved from an initial idea with Nike and PeopleFirm to form a Change Alliance in the PNW comprised of change leaders from local companies interested in discussing change best practices, challenges, and other issues related to change management. Quarterly meetings of the alliance began in July 2011, and the PNW ACMP Chapter formed in April 2012. The initial chapter activity was the Change Connect Symposium in 2012 – with over 250 people in attendance! Following the symposium, the PNW chapter kicked off activities including quarterly webinars on key change topics of interest, coffee chats in Seattle and Portland as informal venues for people to connect and discuss user-generated topics, and monthly newsletters.

ACMP Africa began as an informal group approximately four years ago. It held its first annual conference in 2010 and officially formed an Article 21 (not for profit) company in 2011. Three annual conferences have been held in South Africa and the fourth annual conference, the 2013 ACMP Africa Conference will be held in Kenya for the first time. The Africa Chapter hosts bi-monthly regional Network Events in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa, which they intend to extend to other regions in Africa. They also publish a bi-monthly newsletter that serves to keep friends and members abreast of news and developments in the change management industry.

We create a neutral platform from which friends and members of the ACMP can help to advance the profession, enrich their own skills and knowledge around the discipline, remain informed about the latest developments and connect and collaborate with other practitioners in their region. We currently have 890 friends and members of the ACMP Africa Chapter, and that does not include ACMP Global’s memberships.

The ACMP Candidate Selection, Nomination, and Election Committee (CSNE) is forming to identify a highly qualified slate of candidates for the ACMP Board of Directors. Over the next several months, the CSNE will establish and validate the candidate selection criteria, receive nominations for potential candidates, conduct interviews, and conduct the election of new board members. Current and former ACMP board members, organizational executives, and other ACMP members from around the world make up the CSNE committee. They are chartered to steward the candidate selection and election process to ensure new ACMP board members are active change practitioners with excellent leadership abilities and experience managing global, distributed teams. The nomination period for new board members opens in early December 2013 followed by the election in mid-February 2014. New board members will serve three-year terms. All current ACMP members may cast ballots during the election period. Results will be announced near the end of February 2014 and new board members will be introduced at the ACMP Global Conference, March 31 – April 2, 2014 in Orlando. Be on the lookout for more information about the nomination and election process and ways you can participate in shaping AMCP’s future.

“I feel very strongly about joining professional organizations, like ACMP, to advance my skills and networking opportunities. I believe just as strongly that I should give back to the organization whenever possible. I volunteered for the ACMP Membership Committee as a way to give back to others in the Change Management profession who could benefit from the many resources that ACMP provides as well as the chance to network that is available at conferences and online.” Scott Siler ACMP Membership Task Force

The ACMP Communications Committee is staffed by a group of dedicated volunteers, with a variety of connections to the field of Change Management. Our mission is to execute ACMP Communication strategies by developing content and generating conversations that keep ACMP Members and Friends informed and engaged. The committee’s volunteer assignments are fluid, so everyone has opportunities to work on topics that are of particular interest to them. From month to month, a volunteer may contribute to the Planning and Content work stream, the Dissemination work stream, or to overall committee assignments. We use our own knowledge and our professional networks to identify topics of interest, and we use email, the ACMP website and social media (LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter) as our communication channels.
