sharper.a steelmaker’s electric arc furnace equipped with Praxair’s patented CoJet® gas injection technology can use either scrap metal or hot metal feed, depending on which is less expen-sive for the customer. installed in more than 100 furnaces worldwide, CoJet technology enhances productivity and safety while reduc-ing operating costs by an average of $1.2 million a year.

Praxair responded within four months, reconfiguring our freezers to fit the need. When refinery customers asked for a way to use their excess fuel gas, we devel-oped a breakthrough technology that upgrades it for use in gas turbines or as feedstock to make hydrogen. d e l i v e r s . Our global network of reliability centers maintains a world-class production system with sophisticated analytical tools to predict and prevent mechanical problems. Six Sigma and Lean projects have helped drive on-stream reliability to over 99%. For bulk customers, our planners collect tank-level information by telephone or through Tracker™, our remote telemetry units. Once usage patterns are established, we are able to anticipate

customer requirements. During the 2003 power blackout in the U.S. Northeast and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, Praxair customers continued to be supplied without interrup-tion. And after Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in 2008, we were one of the first to re-open supply lines. Praxair delivers — even under extreme duress.

Bigger.Praxair’s strength in hydrogen supply reliabil-ity achieved a new level in 2007 when we started up the industry’s only commercial hydrogen storage cavern. integrated with our 310-mile u.s. gulf coast hydrogen pipeline complex, the cavern enables us to meet customer demand faster and more reliably, even on short notice, so our refinery and chemical customers can do more.

tighter.many Praxair businesses are using the lean methodology to improve customer service by streamlining work processes and eliminat-ing waste. recently, one of our packaged gases facilities used lean tools to sharply reduce back orders and fulfill customer orders faster. our u.s. health-care business used lean to ease its transition to digital record keeping so transactions will be hassle-free for our customers.

Our hydrogen lowers gasoline and diesel emissions, and also goes into newer bio-fuels. We help chemical producers remove and recycle volatile organic compounds to meet increasingly stringent regulations. And solar cell producers use our highly specialized gases and deposition materials. As a large power

consumer, we understand the drive to lower energy consump-tion. Praxair spends more than $50 million annually to reduce energy use and improve opera-tional efficiencies at our plants and in distribution operations. cleaner.water treatment plants around the world generate tons of sludge every day, which is usually buried in land-fills. Praxair’s ozone-based system is a major new solution to the problem. Pioneered in europe, where landfill capacity is fast diminish-ing, the process reduces sludge by as much as 50% over conventional systems. municipalities and industries are able to cut disposal and handling costs dramati-cally while imposing far less strain on the environment.

tougher.metallurgists at Praxair surface technologies have created high- performance coatings that help jet engine blades and industrial gas turbines withstand high heat, wear and corro-sion. our coatings and applications technolo-gies are also being used to improve the efficiency and durability of bear-ings in wind turbines. as wind energy grows, so will this part of our business.

Our North American supply and distribution infrastructure is unmatched, and we are North America’s only fully integrated sup-plier, able to deliver industrial gases in whatever way makes the most operational and economic sense to our customers. Using Six Sigma methodology to identify risk factors, we work continuously to improve our performance worldwide in every key safety metric. Praxair drivers consistently achieve an ultra-low vehicle accident rate. Two-thirds of our facilities worldwide achieve our zero-accidents, zero-injuries goal in any given quarter. Health,

safety and the environment are critical considerations when we develop new products and processes or design and operate production facilities. We regularly conduct customer training sessions to demonstrate the safe application of our products and technologies.

safer.Just before christmas, alarms sounded at a major customer’s facility. our technician responded immediately, arriving close to mid-night. initial tests suggested all was clear, and the customer was anxious to restart equipment. But our technician insisted on first finding the cause for the alarms. He discov-ered a defective piping connection in the customer’s system that could have had serious consequences. He made the fix and safely restarted operations for one very happy cus-tomer. Just one of many similar stories of the Praxair team’s commit-ment to operating safely.
