Many residents have contacted James Georgeabout the proposed superstore to be sited

on the cattle market site.James said: “I represent a mixed ward of private andsocial housing and the most important thing to me is thatI represent my constituents views and not my own.I have no doubt in my mind that Abergavenny needs an‘affordable’ store but the big question is where it issituated?”So far, the Conservative controlled council has wasted£2 million pounds of council tax payers cash on legal andconsultant fees. All we have to show for this is a cattlemarket site that is exactly the same as it was many yearsago: with no progress or anything to show for millions of

pounds.James addded: “This is just ludicrous, it cannot bejustified and its just not fair on tax payers just likeourselves.”The Tory council claimed to have listened to residents’views. If this was the case they would never have spent£2 million on fees. They would have spent the £2 millionon giving residents what Abergavenny really needs.

Since the election in May 2008, MonmouthshireLiberal Democrats have made a lastingimpression on the Tory controlled council.

We have constantly fought for tax payers money tobe spent in the most efficient way and argued for thebest recycling method to be introduced intoMonmouthshire. We have highlighted the shocking waste of publicmoney over the cattle market replacement inAbergavenny and the huge bill that’s on its way tolocal Council Tax payers for the new County Hall inUsk.The Liberal Democrats are not financed by big business orbig unions: we support ourselves. Each Focus newslettersuch as this is designed, edited, delivered and financed byvolunteers and local Lib Dem councillors. They are ourmain way to keep in touch and comments we receive onthe doorstep show that Focus is well read.If you can spare 20 min's every few months to helpdeliver the Focus to your street or an adjoining streetplease fill in the reply slip below and return byFREEPOST and James George will be in touch.

Many residents will remember Ambus, thecommunity bus which was available to hire by thecommunity. The bus has been idle for 12 monthsand the old committee which used to run the bushas kindly agreed to transfer the bus toAbergavenny Community Association .We haveapplied for Community Grants to get the bus backon the road and I am pleased to say that the bus isnow available for hire by calling 01873 853 623.

LITTER PICKER

Many local residents have commented on how muchthe litter has improved around the ward.Abergaveny Town Council have, at James’ requestfunded a part time litter picker. Most of the Lansdown ward is now getting a regularlitter pick at least once a week and this has made ahuge improvement .However, there are still “hotspots” where rubbishcollects and the Young Offenders have been helpingto clean these areas up.If you know of any messy areas off the beaten trackthen please get in touch and let me know where.

STREET SURGERYJames George has been holding regular surgeries atthe Community First Resource Centre, HillcrestRoad.“Despite good attendances I know that there arepeople who do not feel comfortable coming intothis sort of environment”, said James.“Therefore, in conjunction with Gwent police I havetaken the decision to suspend the surgery in theResource Centre and bring the surgery out on theroad. I intend to hold a street surgery street bystreet to maximise resident participation so lookout for the notification dropping through your letterbox shortly.”

CREDIT UNION’S BIRTHDAYGateway Credit Union has celebrated its 1stbirthday here in Abergavenny. They offer a low cost alternative to the traditionaldoorstep lenders and they have many satisfiedmembers here on the Lansdown ward.
