MMMOOOVVVEEEMMMEEENNNTTT PPPLLLAAATTTFFFOOORRRMMM Education:

*There are 12.9 million one-parent families in the U.S. and 10.4 or 80% are headed by single moms. More than 80% of single moms lack the education they need to advance in a career as a result of 83% of single moms having only a high school diploma. There are thousands of single mothers who understand the importance of obtaining an advanced degree as a means to improve their quality of life. Research indicates that individuals with an advanced degree earn four times more than a person with only a high school education. Many single mothers work at least two jobs to try to earn extra money to go back to school. Because they work and earn more than what is required to be eligible for financial aid or scholarships, they have few if any other sources to identify financial assistance to pursue a higher education. Most single mothers work tirelessly to manage their households and to raise their children while often caring for others. Those single mothers who desire to pursue an advanced degree to be able to become more marketable for higher paying jobs and careers with upward mobility, should not be denied access to education because they do not have the financial means to pay out-of-pocket for their education. PSM advocates for colleges & universities to earmark and set-aside full-ride scholarships for single mothers who desire to obtain advanced degrees. *Sources: U.S. Census Data & Center for Women and Work, Rutgers University.

Employment Through Entrepreneurship: Recent studies have indicated that the changes and shifts in the U.S. economy have shaken many working families and single women heads of households to the core. Over the last three years, the economy has shed over 5 million jobs and unemployment rates have hit a record high for single moms in America. PSM has created a pilot program called the “Small Business Academy for Single Mothers” in an effort to train and develop single moms as business owners so that they shall become the “employer and not the unemployed.” PSM is seeking to partner with the U.S. Department of Labor and other government agencies, foundations, corporations and community organizations to expand this program nationwide to help our most vulnerable population (single moms and their children) to become self-sufficient and financially stable through the development of new businesses. *Source: At Rope’s End: Single Women Mothers, Wealth and Assets in the U.S., NYU/Wagner Women of Color Policy Network

Child Support: There are still thousands of single mothers who are eligible to receive child support to assist with raising their children. However, they are not receiving this support. PSM advocates for services through the state and federal government to help track the fathers and their assets so that single mothers are able to receive financial assistance to help with the expenses of raising their children.

There are so many areas of need for single mothers living in America. Focus groups conducted in 2008 with over 200 single mothers identified several issues which many feel have impacted their lives. The unique issues that many single mothers face are compounded by a lack of support, gaps in services or non-existent programs to address their concerns. Project Single Moms Worldwide, Inc. strives to advocate on behalf of single mothers by accessing funding earmarked specifically for programs that offer single mothers a hand up towards self-sufficiency as opposed to a hand out which only offers temporary solutions to the long-term problems and challenges faced by many single mothers in America.

2010 YEAR IN REVIEW

Project Single Moms Worldwide (PSM WW) along with its NJ, Chicago, LA, Houston, Atlanta, and Metro DC affiliates co-presented the Project Working Mom (PWM) 2010's Women Who Rule the World Networking Dinner Series hosting more than 1,500 women in six cities. The PWM campaign awarded more than $5 million in 285 full-tuition scholarships to working and/or single moms to return back to school to pursue advanced degrees. A very special thanks to Shanick Moore, Loretta Rivers, Tameeka Moody, FaKelia Guyton, Kelly Meeks, Angela Hudson, LaTanya Lamar, Paula Smith, Ruby Gatling, Amanda Edwards, Kristy Lewis, Carla Howard, Ladwona Salary and all the PSM committee leaders and members who stepped up and supported events in their local communities.

Project Single Moms Worldwide was invited to participate in the 2010 Essence Music Festival and was exposed to more than 300,000 festival attendees during the three-day event. The festival was a wonderful platform to promote the movement and our brand. National staff members and PSM-Atlanta Local Coordinators connected with hundreds of single moms across the country and signed up more than 500 new members at the festival. PSM WW was also provided an onstage platform to present a seminar on Redefining Single Moms in America.

Initially created as a program under the umbrella of My Daughter's Keeper, Inc. and due to the drastic growth of the Project Single Moms movement, PSM WW was legally registered as a separate non-profit business entity now headquartered in Atlanta, GA. PSM WW’s tax exempt application has been approved by the IRS. As a 501c3 non-profit organization, PSM WW will be able to pursue local, state, and federal funding opportunities to support the work of the national office, replenish A Hand Up Fund to provide member support, and to support its affiliates through technical assistance and training.

In October 2010, Project Single Moms Worldwide, Inc. launched the Small Business Academy for Single Mothers developed to help single moms pave their own way as entrepreneurs and small business owners. The inaugural class of the Small Business Academy consists of seven PSM leaders who have participated in a 12-week business training to launch their local affiliates as 501c3 nonprofit businesses. The next class will begin in May 2011 serving 15-20 single mothers.

Our membership increased by more than 43% in 2010 and we now have more than 2,000 members in 40 states and six countries.

While our leadership has changed through some of our local affiliates in 2010, we have recruited new leaders who have launched new affiliates bringing us to 14 active affiliates: New Jersey; Queens, NY; Metro Chicago, IL; Metro DC; Newport News; VA; Hampton, VA; Suffolk, VA; Tampa/St. Pete, FL; Memphis, TN; Indianapolis, IN; Winston-Salem, NC; Atlanta, GA; Birmingham, AL; and Waco, TX.

In 2010, through "A Hand Up Fund" which provides temporary financial assistance to single moms for emergency and empowerment purposes, PSM WW helped 17 single moms with rental assistance, utility assistance, emergency travel, clothing, toys and school supplies for their children, OB/GYN office visits and procedures, educational assistance and auto repair assistance.

Project Single Moms Worldwide has redesigned its website and officially did a soft launch of the new website on January 1. The website is now available for viewing. Please be patient as we finalize uploading content so we can ensure the new website provides information and resources to help enhance the quality of life for single moms in our core empowerment areas. Please visit our new website and let us know what you think. www.projectsinglemoms.com.

2011 PROGRAM & PLANNING PREVIEW National Advocacy Week All national and local staff will receive advocacy and understanding the legislative process training in March to help leaders prepare to conduct advocacy efforts on a grassroots level through their local affiliates. Leaders will learn how to identify, contact, and present the PSM movement platform issues to their state legislators. All affiliates will launch their advocacy efforts during PSM’s National Advocacy Week slated for March 28 – April 1.

Launch of S.E.P.I.A. Program All Local Coordinators are currently undergoing training to launch the S.E.P.I.A. (Self Empowerment Principles in Action) program. Through its nine-steps, single moms learn how to identify the challenges in their lives, accept what they have learned, take constructive action to change the things within their control, commit to a new way of being, focus on their goals, develop and maintain faith, expand and challenge their concept of love, remain teachable and learn how to eliminate the mindset of scarcity by giving to others. The SEPIA Process empowers single moms to make tremendous and consistent positive changes within themselves.

National Social Media Campaign In April, Project Single Moms Worldwide will use the power of single moms to launch an educational campaign through the use of social media. All national and local leaders will create and distribute movement messages through the use of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The goal is to create a unified voice and to promote relevant issues for single moms to our constituents through social media.

Small Business Academy for Single Mothers In an effort to help single moms pave their own way as entrepreneurs and small business owners, Project Single Moms Worldwide, Inc. launched the Small Business Academy for Single Mothers in October 2010. The Small Business Academy for Single Mothers is a microenterprise development program. Through the Academy, single mothers participate in an intensive 12-week business development training program learning all aspects of starting a for-profit or non-profit business. The second session will begin in May with a class of 15-20 single mothers.

National Director of Project Single Moms Worldwide, Inc., Stephanie M.Clark, has plans to conduct site visits to all PSM affiliates during the months of March, April and May to deliver a State of Single Mothers in America Address to the leaders and members of Project Single Moms Worldwide, Inc. ECONOMIC REALITIES OF SINGLE MOTHERS IN AMERICA

In recent years, both minority-owned and women-owned businesses have grown, but many women have been left behind. Expanding access to business ownership will help more single mothers generate income, build assets and sufficiently prepare for retirement.* Unemployment among single mothers has almost doubled and remains at the highest level since the recessionbegan.**

Unemployment for women who head families increased to 13.4 percent in July and August from 12.1 percent in June. The 13.4 percent rate is almost twice the pre-recession rate of 6.9 percent in December 2007, the highest unemployment rate for this particularly vulnerable group in over 25 years.**

The picture for women of color is also bleak. Unemployment among African American women increased by 13.2 percent in August, up from 12.9 percent in July and 11.8 percent in June.**

Although 69 percent of families in the U.S. own their own home, only one-third of single mothers are homeowners. Single mothers with a college degree are more than three times as likely to own homes as single mothers with a high school diploma.* *SOURCE: “At Rope’s End: Single Women Mothers, Wealth & Assets in the U.S. – NYU/Wagner Women of Color Policy Network **SOURCE: *Bureau of Labor Statistics & National Women’s Law Center

ECONOMIC REALITIES OF SINGLE MOTHERS IN AMERICA

It is estimated that over 18 million children live in households headed by over 10.4 million single mothers. Compared to two-parent families, households headed by single women mothers are more likely to live in poverty and have fewer financial assets. Research show that children who are raised in poverty are also more likely to be poor as adults. The most recent recession dealt a devastating blow to single mothers. In 2009, 4 out of 10 African American and Latino households headed by single mothers lived in poverty –a figure nearly double the number of households headed by single white women. Over the last twenty years, social supports for single mothers have declined significantly. The passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 coupled with continued cuts in funding for federal programs to low income families, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), has made it nearly impossible for single women mothers to become economically secure to build wealth. Single mothers possess only 4 percent of the wealth of single fathers: $100 compared to $25,300.

Race and ethnicity are significant factors in building wealth among single mothers. Black and Latino single mothers have a median wealth of zero, whereas white women report a median wealth of $6,000.

Education is a strong indicator of wealth and assets among single mothers. Single mothers with less than a high school education have a net worth of zero, while those with a college degree or higher have a median net worth of $35,000. Six percent of single mothers own business assets. Variation by educational attainment, marital status, and race is not as great with other assets, but single mothers who are white and those with college degrees are most likely to own business assets. The low rates of business ownership for single mothers may suggest that single mothers represent an untapped resource for entrepreneurship.
