We consider that the university is an exceptional place in a society and in one’s life. The university is a place where people from different background and different place meet and share experiences together before getting to the professional life. It is the only time in our life where we are asked to think, write and experiment without the fear to be fired or lose a job opportunity. Virtually in every university freedom of speech and freedom of thought are guaranteed. Academic pressure has become a dominant factor in a student’s life and as a result, he/she is unable to reconcile their life into a more systematic manner through which they could enjoy to expose their own views of life. Today, freedom of speech is restricted to department and the pages of the books. We simply don’t know or are unaware of discussions and exchanges that are taking place in our own university. Writing permits to organize and express one’s idea and opinion to a wider audience. Writing permits to structure our thought and make it understandable to everyone. Writing permits to the reader to understand one’s view and confront his own opinion and analysis. Why a newspaper ? For whom ?

1

Hence, it will benefit to everyone, as we will be able to learn from each other and open our mind to another idea.

Political and socioeconomic divisions divide the society. These divisions are not without consequences on students and in the university. One’s socioeconomic background limits his/her possibility to experience something equally.

Not everyone can read, write and understand in English. Not everyone can publish a paper or take the risk to publish a paper.

Not everyone is able to express his or her opinion in public.

Each one will see the world differently and see their future career differently. Even we can say that the university reinforce in certain aspect divisions of the society when it lack to understand and provide specific education to erase inequalities amongst students.

We clearly don’t want to take any political position or to be linked to any political parties or trends. We want simply to permit student to exercise their freedom of speech and thought in our university through writing articles and opinions in this paper. This is why we decided to call it “A View” as each article and opinion expresses a view irrespective of the fact whether it influences society or not.

We want to practice democratic values and freedom that are guaranteed to us. We hope people who are against such activity will understand that democracy and freedoms are not restricted in parliaments or public places but it is everywhere at any time.

We hope that this paper will permit exchange of ideas, criticisms, analysis, news, and activities taking place in the University of Madras.

In order, to make this paper open to anyone even those who cannot write in English or simply can’t write an article. We welcome any kind of writings even with mistakes and huge mistakes. We will take the time to type your

article and discuss with you to improve it.

We don’t want a paper where usual discussion is taking place. We want to innovate, make readers to think and reflect about articles that are published. We want to confront ideas and opinions to permit to develop our analytical skills and our understanding of the world.

We will be publishing as regularly as possible every two weeks and when it is needed.

This paper as it is the first edition, it shows what we aim to achieve and how we want to achieve it. We are open to any suggestion, contribution and question from interested persons. We hope to build an inter-department team for this paper you are most welcome to join from any department.

One verse of Thirukkural illustrates our mindset:

!ற# 611: அ"ைம உைட$ெத'( அசாவாைம ேவ#$% ெப#ைம !ய#$ த"#.

Kural 611: Say not, 'Tis hard', in weak, desponding hour, For strenuous effort gives prevailing power. Explanation: Never say it is too hard or impossible, labor will give the greatness (of mind), which is necessary (to do it).

We will not be responsible for any content and article. Each article and content published in this paper is solely the view of the author. We will not take the responsibility for their opinion as we don’t censure or restraint anyone from publishing articles and contents.

Donec interdum

Thai Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated by Tamil people at the end of the harvest season.

In Tamil, the word Pongal means, "overflowing" which signifies abundance and prosperity. On the day of Pongal, at the time of sun rise there is a symbolic ritual of boiling fresh milk in a new clay pots and when the milk boils over and bubbles out of the vessel, people shout "Pongalo Pongal!" They also say "Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakkum" meaning "the commencement of Thai paves the way for new opportunities" is often quoted regarding the Pongal festival. Tamilians decorate their homes with banana and mango leaves and embellish the floor with decorative patterns drawn using rice flour.

It is a secular festival common to all Tamilians, with no regards to their living place, their religion, their social background and their culture. It is celebrated around the world in Malaysia, Singapore, France, United-Kingdom, Mauritius and in any country where Tamilians are living.

Apart   from its strategic location in the land of Middle East and containing different ethno-religious groups, Syria is confronting the different dilemmas in the form of terrorism, conflicts and proxy wars.

Starting from the paradoxical regime of president Bashar al Assad to the gun period of terrorists, the civilians of Syria have been pushed to the dark regime of the era and therefore, they are forced to resign their country and hide their faces under the veil of Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. Many of them have tried to seek refuge in European countries such as Sweden.

United Nations putting forward its help to solve the matter through aiding common people, and recently in 2014 U.S, Russia and UN called up a conference at Switzerland and decided to form a transitional governing body in Syria based on mutual consent. According diverse newspapers the total number of civilians causalities is about 200 000 and half of the total population fled their homes.

Since January, students from different degree are playing Parai instrument after classes in the conference room. If you hear good beats it comes from there.

After many months of discussions, students of DPPA introduced a weekly Parai Jamming session in the University. This session has different goals. According to the participants, it brings the traditional Tamil rhythm in the university and permits them to escape during few hours the academic life. Moreover, they argue that after their student life the probability to practice a drum is scarce and we should use the time we have as a student to learn and practice between ourselves. Many students were afraid to introduce the instrument amongst the students however the jamming session were seen as a great success as almost everyone who heard the drums beating came and tried to play it. Students faced a lack of “Parai” drums as many student showed interest. They are planning to buy more drums. Every Friday after 5pm – DPPA/Conference room

Several students participated to the United Nations Assembly General simulation on the Jammu and Kashmir issue. Delegates were asked to go beyond their national view and step into the shoes of a national diplomat from different countries. Participants were able to understand basics of negotiations, writing speeches, public speaking and be creative on the issue. As a final resolution, the assembly decided to create a UN round of negotiations between neighboring countries and Security Council members to solve the problem. Amongst represented countries were United States of America, France, Japan and so on. Professors and students welcomed the experiment as a practical game for student to understand the international arena. IRS (International Relations Simulation) members organized this simulation. They aim to develop activities around International Relations with workshops and organize seminars to increase our understanding of world politics. After numerous requests from student to organize a new simulation, the team is looking for new members to organize a new simulation with a new topic. FB group : IR Simulation–Madras University
