CLUB NOTES Happy New Year 2017! When I started at Creekside in early May, those were the words I hoped I could say, one “Moore” time...Happy New Year 2017! Your favorite course is still here and getting stronger each and every day. We know we have a great course, great clubhouse with really nice amenities; pool, workout rooms, per- formance center and driving range. We have now added two more amenities. Creekside Skin & Nails Spa. Jen Anderson and Athena Torres will now be on site to offer great services to all our members and guests. They will be working in one room right across from the workout room and the other room just be- side the pro shop (the old meeting room). I saw two rooms, one used for storage and one for only a few meetings a month, both producing no rev- enue, and now we have two great services offered that will also produce revenue for our club. As far as the meeting room goes, we will try to use the private dining room or banquet room for its replacement. Let us know ahead of time if you need a meeting area set up for your business or poker-type parties. I have one or two more amenities that I’m working on right now and will keep you posted on my progress. Our goal is to make Creekside the place everyone wants to join! I feel we are getting closer and closer each and every day. We’ve been working very hard on the yearly golf calendar and expect to have it out both online and a printable version by the end of January. Welcome to a new year “2017”! As we enter the New Year Iwould like to look at some interesting statistics about the “GolfCourse” we call Creekside Golf Club that most people aren’taware of. Generally when we discuss a golf course we haveplayed we talk about the greens, the course conditioning, specificholes that stuck out to us, the par, the length, maybe how difficultor easy it was, and of course how we played. Very rarely do wesit around discussing what an environmental asset the golf courseis in our community. However, believe it or not golf courses con-tinue to be under the microscope in the environmental arena, andare highly criticized for having detrimental effects on the environ-ment. Really?? Let’s look more closely at this… What is an average 18 hole golf course comprised of? Most golfcourses consist of 150 acres of which 100 acres is maintainedturf. Out of those 100 acres the most intensely maintained areasare tees and greens which make up just 7 percent, or barely 7acres on average. Other maintained areas include 50+ acres of

rough, 30 acres of fairways, 8 acres of driving range/practice areas, and 3 acres of clubhouse grounds. Creeksidefalls very close into these averages with its 155 acre property.

What else is a golf course comprised of? At Creekside we have the following:• A 1 ½ acre lake that is home to several hundred fish, Blue herons, Ducks, Geese, Osprey, Frogs, Salamanders, ohand a fair amount of golf balls.

• Several thousand feet of meandering creeks that create a safe environment for a variety of wildlife and small fish.• Over 25 acres of grassy/wooded areas that host a variety of small animals that becomes food for larger preda-tors such as hawks, coyotes, and foxes. Larger animals also use these areas to bed down or travel through inorder to hide. These would include deer, fox, rabbits, coyote, and some types of birds.

• Over 2000 trees of all types such as Fir, Maples, Cedars, Ash, Sequoias, Birch, Willows, Pines, Alder, Cotton-wood, Oak, Hemlock, Walnut, Sweetgum, Dogwood, Cherry, and Apple. Of course these trees are home to allsorts of birds, squirrels, chipmunks, insects, etc…

• Then of course we have a large amount of acreage in maintained turf. Turf grass itself contributes greatly to ourenvironment in a variety of ways such as reducing heat (asphalt and concrete are much hotter), improves the airwe breath by converting carbon dioxide to oxygen, controls erosion and runoff (unlike bare soil) and even ab-sorbs water.

Well this is just a sampling of what our golf course consists of. Golf courses are amazing environments that help sus-tain an incredibly diverse group of plants and animals.

Our local and national golf course superintendent associations continue to strive to manage golf course propertiesfor what they are “A piece of land that has a diverse environment living on and in it” while providing excellent golfplaying conditions.

Happy New Year!
