ArtsPartners: Enriching classrooms and communities....transforming lives!

Welcome to ArtsPartners, ArtsWestchester’s arts-in-education program, designed to help educators and other professionals integrate the arts into a variety of settings from classrooms to museums; day care centers to shelters.

ArtsPartners is designed to make classrooms and community sites more creative and eff ective by giving students and participants opportunities to bring learning to life through the arts. At the heart of the program is the ArtsWestchester’s Artist Roster. The Roster is a directory of teaching artists who are eligible to conduct residencies in schools and community sites through ArtsWestchester grants. This array of accomplished teaching artists - actors, dancers, writers, visual artists, and more - are trained to use the arts as an instructional tool. Students and participants learn in and through the art-making process in a sequential series of participatory, creative residency sessions led by these teaching artists and classroom teachers.

ArtsPartners is your springboard to deepening knowledge of the curricula, exceeding classroom goals, addressing New York State learning standards, as well as building new-found self-confi dence in creative, social, and behavioral abilities.

THE ARTSPARTNERS HANDBOOK SERIES

The ArtsPartners Handbook is a series of three digital resource books designed to help educators and other professionals integrate the arts into many different areas of learning, from classrooms to museums to day care centers and shelters. The goal of the series is to help you use the power and potential of the arts to reach children and adults in new and effective ways. The Arts Partners series currently consists of:

The Artist Roster: A Directory of Professional Teaching Artists in WestchesterTurn to this directory for contact and biographical information on more than 100 teaching artists who have passed ArtsWestchester’s rigorous screening process. Each has proven his or her artistic and teaching competency in the classroom and community sites, and has a strong record of bringing learning to life through art.

The Artist Residency Handbook: A Guide to Conducting Successful Residencies in Schools and Community SitesThis practical resource is your one-stop guide for creating and implementing a successful artist residency program in any school or community site.

The Cultural Organizations Roster: A Guide to Arts Education Programs in WestchesterWestchester is home to many cultural organizations that provide arts-in-education services. This guide describes their successful arts education programs, ranging from theatrical performances to fi lm series.

USING THE HANDBOOKSBeginning with the 2009/2010 school year, ArtsWestchester will no longer be publishing printed versions of the ArtsPartners Handbooks. Instead, you have received the book electronically. Producing the books as PDF files reduces production costs and helps the environment, with the added advantage that the electronic books should prove easier to use. Skip ahead or back to the pages you need by using the arrow keys or entering the page number you are looking for, or use the links from the Table of Contents and Index. Please conserve paper by printing only the pages you need, and print on both sides of the paper whenever possible!

Dear Friends of the Arts:

Welcome to ArtsWestchester’s new digital ArtsPartners Handbooks, a reference series designed to help you locate the teaching artists, cultural resources and information you need to develop artist residencies for your school or organization.

ArtsWestchester roster off ers everything from drama to African dance, calligraphy, felt making, fi lm making, computer graphics and much more. The artists profi led in the Artist Roster have been vetted for artistic teaching competency, with a track record of bringing learning to life through the arts and collaborative skills leading to curriculum integration in the classroom.

Increasingly, research is validating the important role the arts play in learning and human development. Involvement in the arts fosters the growth of key cognitive skills. Today’s knowledge-based economy requires workers who can think creatively, solve problems, exercise individual judgment, solve problems and interact eff ectively with others. Sociability and high self esteem are key components of these abilities. These workforce skills are nurtured through an education in the arts.

Through ArtsWestchester you can access the tools and assistance you need to integrate the arts into your programs, enriching the learning experience. If you are not already a member, we invite you to join now. For more information, please contact the Education Programs Department at 914-428 4220 x236 or email [email protected].

Sincerely,

Janet T. LangsamExecutive DirectorArtsWestchester

Specialized Training: Former College Board Advance Placement Reader in Studio Art. Workshop attendee at Center for Connecticut Contemporary Printmaking. MFA in printmaking, University of Maryland.

Margery Freeman Appelbaum has over twenty years of experience as a college art professor and an exhibiting artist. Her artwork had been shown in more than thirty international, national and regional exhibitions and eight – one/two person shows. She has received ten grants or awards and her work is held in seven corporate collections, including the Washington Post and USA Today. Currently, she is an Adjunct Professor at Westchester Community College and the Graduate School of College of New Rochelle where she teaches painting, color theory, drawing, and portfolio presentations for high school students. She also gives WCC-sponsored classes in color theory and painting to senior citizens.

“As an advocate for integrating creative visual learning into all areas of traditional academics, I offer schools three workshops that use the traditional fine art skill of rendering to teach poetry, biology, or mathematics. Students learn to observe keenly what they often visually dismiss. All workshops are interdisciplinary and are especially effective with 7th through 12th grade students.”

Recent Projects: 1997 – Maryland State Arts Council Mural Residency: sixth graders in rural/suburban Western Maryland created a mixed media mural based on historic photographs, maps, and found objects with assistance of the history teachers, parents, and the local historic society. Sponsoring teacher & PTA organized a trip to a historic home in the community and an “archeological dig” for found objects on school property and an adjoining farm. These objects became part of the permanent mural.

Specialized Training: Graphic Design training at School of Visual Arts. 25 years of professional experience as a graphic designer

Nicoletta Barolini has worked as a professional graphic designer and illustrator for 25 years, 15 of those specifically in computer graphics. Her generation was at the front-lines of the digital revolution. Consequently, she has experienced both sides of the graphics and print industry; before computers and after.

She obtained her BA in fine arts, as a sculpture major, focusing on limestone carving and plaster casting, and as a dance minor, specializing in modem dance, from Sarah Lawrence. After graduation she soon decided to move into a more lucrative field of art: print graphics.

She enrolled at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and embarked on a career in graphic designer and illustration, finding work with various NY publishers. Eventually, fully embracing the digital revolution, she become a computer graphics expert and published her work in trade books such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Painter Side-by-Side, Step-by-Step, and Electronic Design Magazine.

Recent Projects: Barolini continues to sculpt and paint fine art in her free time. She participated in the Cow Parade 2000, exhibiting the “I Cow” on 49th and 6th, in Manhattan, NY; her sculptural work has also been sold in galleries nationwide. More recently she had the honor to be one of five artists selected to have her art featured on a Yonkers garbage truck.

Deborah Beck has been a painter/printmaker for many years, exhibiting extensively in solo and group shows on the East Coast. Working in oil and water-based media, her recent shows included “KMAA at Northern Westchester Hospital” in Mt. Kisco, NY; “Community” at Westchester Art Workshop College Gallery, Peekskill, NY; “Dreamscapes” at Mountaintop Gallery, Windham, NY; and “NAWA 117th Annual Exhibition” at Goggle Works in Reading, PA. In addition, she is a highly experienced art educator who has run numerous workshops, ages K-adult, at the Tarrytown “Y”; an after school enrichment program at Washington Irving Elementary School, grades 4-6; and “The ABC’s of Painting” for adults at SUNY Cobbleskill, NY.

Recent Projects: Linoleum block printing residency: Grade 4, social studies theme “Native American Life.” Working in tandem with teachers, students studied Native American cultures & history and created related images. Each student sketched several ideas then refined them to one idea, which was drawn in reverse on the linoleum plate. They then applied water based ink in one or more colors and hand printed images. As a culminating activity an exhibition of the work was viewed school wide.

Adult Women with Cancer: “ABC’s of Painting”: A series of exercises included brushwork, color mixing, line, value, etc. Technique exploration and expansion led into themes, abstract or realistic. Self expression & imagination was encouraged. As a culminating activity the group reviewed their own and each others’ work to see the great progress made in exploration & mastery of painting techniques, which had resulted in many exciting & interesting paintings.

Specialized Training: Certificate designating master status from the Instituto d’Arte per il mosaico di Ravenna, Ravenna, Italy. Certificate in Augusto Boal Theater Movements from the Bronx Museum of Art. This special training allows me to teach critical thinking skills and conflict resolution to youth through movement.

“I characterize my core teaching values as “connections” because I consider public art a means to encourage viewers to discover how all of us are connected to each other, the environment, and the global community. Mosaic is a perfect medium to communicate that message because my mosaic work is traditional in the sense that each characteristic is combined, but juxtaposed, reflecting the unique quality of each individual tessera against the whole image. In mosaic, there is interdependence between what the tesserae define and what is implied by the mosaic as a whole. The medium never becomes subservient to the image, which is why mosaic is captivating to all ages. Even adults love to pick up the small colorful pieces and are amazed that these tiny pieces can form a masterpiece. The materials are engaging and offer a metaphor for the world: we all have an individual role to play in the world, but our roles intrinsically connect us to each other.”

Recent Projects: Our Journeys to P.S. 11: 120 ft. Large Scale Permanent Public Art Mosaic. Students studied the history of immigration to the U.S.A. through research and interviews, wrote and illustrated their family’s immigration in journals and sketchbooks and created a cultural map of the world which was constructed by students into a large mosaic.

Intergenerational Mosaic Project: Seniors and children studied the concept of abstract art and the works and painting techniques of artist, Joan Mirro, and then created mosaic sculptures inspired by his work.

Specialized Training: Fashion Institute of Technology – Fashion Marketing; M.S. Brooklyn College – Secondary Teaching of Clothing & Textiles. Evelyn Eidelberg’s ability to create patterns and sew allows her to manipulate other media to produce simple yet dramatic projects. She has developed simple weaving techniques that produce finished projects that look a lot more complicated than they are.

Eidelberg began her career as an NYC Home & Careers Sewing Shop teacher. She then worked as a designer in Manhattan’s Garment Industry and has taught in schools, senior centers, museums and art camps.

Her specialty is in creating exotic and primitive art forms. Her ethnic dolls have sold at Macy’s “Blackberry Shop” as well as the Brooklyn Museum Gift Shop. She has exhibited her fabric-hanging dolls at Russell Simmons’ Rush Art Gallery.

Recent Projects:Mt. Vernon Senior Center: Participants created 12 projects for home and/or gifts. A variety of materials were used with no special skills needed. Some of the products produced were hats, purses, picture frames & ethnic dolls. The culminating project was a 3’x9’ quilt-wall hanging.

Museum Residency, Junior High students, Native American Unit, “Stories Unbound.” A corn-husk doll was completed with two classes. A “Seminole” style doll was completed with the other two classes. Each class also sewed quilt squares with traditional colors and motifs; the squares were sewn together for each class, thereby creating four quilts. This exhibit was then mounted at the Hudson River Museum.

“I have always believed that the power of an image can change the way we see the world.” Since 1977 Richard Falco has worked as a photographer in New York and has traveled extensively throughout the world, working on assignments in Asia, Africa, Europe and the United States. His photographs have appeared in major publications throughout North America, Europe and Asia, including: Time, Newsweek, Life, New York Times, Geo, US News & World Report. Falco is the author of two books: To Bear Witness/September 11 and Medics: A Documentation of Paramedics in the Harlem Community.

An editor, curator and educator, Falco has over twenty years of teaching experience. He has taught and lectured at a number of schools and institutions; most notably the New School of Social Research, the School of Visual Arts, the Art Workshop/SUNY, and Purchase College/SUNY. He has done several ‘Artist in Residency’ programs with ArtsWestchester at a number of Westchester schools.

Recent Projects: Falco is also the president of Vision Project. Vision Project is an organization dedicated to the development of documentary photography and related fields of research and investigation. The goal of Vision Project is to produce in-depth investigative documentaries and educational programs that encourage understanding and awareness.

His classes are about creating photographs that affect others. Photography can give us a strong and important voice; it can serve as a means in which we generate awareness and chronicle our history. His courses help the student develop the skills and insights necessary to document those things that are important to them. Students focus on using images to create insights and make a difference. “My goal is to broaden the student’s understanding of the world and to emphasize social consciousness and contribute to society,” says Falco.

For 25 years, Donna Faranda has created art work using the pointillism technique. Her medium of choice is watercolor on paper; however, most recently she has been creating art work on the computer, working with photographic montages using Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter and traditional pointillist technique, while her subject matter has shifted from organic abstract shape to more realistic renderings. Through her work she creates worlds that are composed of molecular structures which have a type of lyrical quality. “There is a type of rhythm which bespeaks forces that can calm and soothe things, making life appear better,” says Faranda. Using a pointillist technique has helped her explore both color and content of objects and the natural forces at play while expressing her love of life. It has helped her portray and make some order out of the inherent chaos of nature and existence. Her art work has been exhibited in various galleries in New York City as well as Washington DC and Avignon, France.

Faranda has been involved with art education for 20 years both on the elementary and adult levels. She has taught in a gallery setting at several major museums in New York City, worked with inner city children, taught art after- school programs and day camps and worked with elderly psychiatric patients while employed by Hospital Audiences.

Recent Projects: In one after-school program we took a walking tour of the neighborhood and made sketches of houses. Afterwards, we made a large scale map (5’ X 4’) of the neighborhood. A day camp art project involved developing a camp newspaper with the children both writing and illustrating for the paper. Faranda also developed a nature curriculum, which included visits to various places in New York City (i.e. Central Park, the Aquarium, Governors Island and the Bronx Zoo) followed by an art related activity.

Specialized Training: Ann Ladd Ferencz has painted murals for the past 20 years. She is often asked to transform thousands of square feet into new and different visual spaces for private clients and public projects.

One reviewer, commenting on her work, noted that “Ann is driven by a desire to transform her entire world into a work of art. For her there is no distinction between the room, the walls and the art.... The viewer doesn’t so much look at her work as enter into it...”

The subjects Ferencz uses are often inspired from nature and her interpretation of memories and observations of being outdoors as a child. Her private painting has included major mural projects, such as the “Healing Walls” project sponsored by Westco Productions. In addition, she has led a number of residencies in various public schools. In such residencies, she works with both students and teachers to create large murals that bring visual meaning to their curriculum. She provide the paint, the brushes, and the paper and the students develop painted images (generally based on themes taken from an underlying curriculum they are studying); their painted images are then cut out and permanently collaged onto the school walls where they can be appreciated by all.

Recent Projects: Ferencz is also a docent at the Neuberger Museum where she introduces children and adults to contemporary paintings and sculpture.

Kathleen Gallagher’s experience as a teacher and artist has prepared her to work with diverse populations. She believes arts in education instills, in children and adults, the joy of participating in the creative process and a sense of purpose through freedom of expression. She focuses on the developing and strengthening of her students’ ideas and confidences through the teaching of skills and techniques.

“I believe art is very important regardless of the form expressed. Art celebrates life and adds beauty and interest to our surroundings. I enjoy working collaboratively with students in creating cohesive pieces that enhance and enrich the community.”

Gallagher has experience teaching art to all ages from children to adults (3-90). She has experience teaching watercolor and etching as an adjunct instructor in local collages. Presently she teaches art full time at Albert Leonard in New Rochelle. Since returning to teaching full time, Kathleen has been spending more time doing watercolor than etching. She is on the advisory council of the Society of American Graphic Artists and listed in the Who’s Who in American Art.

Recent Projects: Her recent workshops have been murals painted on masonite and metal surfaces. The murals were done by children ages 5-13 in a recreation center and homeless shelter. The works were installed so that in the future they could be moved for wall painting or renovations. The murals in the homeless shelter were installed in the breakfast room where they transformed the space into bright and cheerful place to eat with the family. The children chose family fun and a relaxing underwater scene as themes to paint. All participants were pleased and proud of their work and efforts in working together.

Ms. Gladstone has worked in arts education and arts in the NYC school system & throughout Westchester. Her students’ projects have won several awards. She believes that the arts provide students the non-judgmental means to create, represent or describe newly-acquired knowledge of objects, events and ideas at various levels of concreteness. Whether used as a source for a writing/reading project or as the final documentation for science or social studies, it allows children to understand and recall information in their own voice.

Recent Projects: Healthy Foods = Happy Kids: Mural Residency Grades 1st- 3rd, Montessori School 11, Yonkers. Children learned about the food pyramid and healthy foods and exercise. They created drawings showing themselves playing and exercising. These were translated into a 60’x4’ mural in the school cafeteria.

100th Anniversary Library Quilt, Warner Library, Tarrytown, NY. Children, adults, and various elected officials created drawings about their feelings on books and the library. These were transferred onto quilt squares. A total of 86 squares were fashioned into a 4’x11’ quilt.

People in History Quilt, Grade 5. Project involved research and reports on people who had the most impact during the last millennium. Logos were created & squares made resulting in a 6’x6’ quilt which won awards.

Specialized Training: Harvard graduate with a MFA in Painting from Yale. Andrea Kantrowitz was an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin and now teaches in NYC public schools through the Studio in a School organization. Her work has been exhibited nationally; locally it can be seen at Kenise Barnes Fine Art in Larchmont. She has also illustrated several children’s books and has taught portrait drawing and painting from kindergarten through college.

“Portraits are a great vehicle for teaching a multitude of art and non-art concepts; self-awareness, emotional expression, and narrative can be discussed as can contrast, color, and perspective.”

Recent Projects: Portrait Drawing: Form and Expression, Middle school. Students used mirrors to study basic proportions of the face and the form of facial features. Traditional portrait drawing techniques were introduced and students used one color of their choice in addition to black and white chalk on toned paper. They then analyzed a variety of photos of extreme expressions and chose one to use as reference for a narrative imaginary portrait. Finally, students created expressive self portraits exaggerating the facial expression added backgrounds and other narrative elements.

All About Me: Kindergarten. Emphasized the expressive qualities of color and texture through drawing, painting, and collage. First, using the primary colors, students painted papers every color of the rainbow; subtle textures and patterns were added. Next, students collected interesting odds and ends and combined these with the papers to create a wonderful cast of characters. Then, students used mirrors to make practice self-portrait drawings. When they had a drawing they liked, they transferred it to clear acetate, using Sharpie markers. Students chose one of the painted papers to use as a background. Then they used oil pastels to add more color to their final drawings.

Specialized Training: BFA in Ceramics with additional ceramic classes and workshops.

Judith Leire has been involved with clay and ceramics for the past ten years, she calls it a marvelous journey of exploration and creativity. Her journey has included: solo and group shows both here and abroad, being published in Clay Times, and chosen for inclusion in the Lark Publication 500 Cups.

Along the way have come many teaching opportunities - among them being the Clay Art Center, Westchester Art Workshop and Pottery on Hudson.

“It has been a great joy for me to have the chance to share my knowledge and experience. I have had students from grammar school to senior adults - all with a wide range of abilities.

Whether it is a Navajo or African coil pot, a Mayan mask, a Persian tile, or a coffee mug, clay is a familiar medium that is part of virtually every culture from the beginning of time to the present. It is my belief that working in clay is a positive experience for mostly everyone. I approach all my classes with enthusiasm and a large dose of individual attention. My goal is to create a pleasurable experience that culminates in a successful outcome for all.

Clay is an easy, forgiving medium, so there are no “mistakes.” The very nature of clay and its ability to change shape at a touch encourages the imagination and creative thinking, resulting in a sense of accomplishment. It is the student’s sense of accomplishment and pride that I find so profoundly rewarding as a teaching artist. And besides, it’s a lot of fun!”

Specialized Training: BA in Independent Documentary Production and extensive professional experience in television production.

I am a film maker and producer, specializing in documentaries. I believe that hands-on experience and mentoring is an individual learning experience for the student. In my formal education, I was taught by working documentary filmmakers. Presenting their work and sharing their process, they made a powerful impact on me. This and other experiences led to my first job in television as a production intern. Since that time I have produced and packaged hundreds of documentary films for weekly broadcast on PBS including my most recent work as a segment producer for WNET’s Emmy Award winning public affairs series, “New York Voices”.

As a teaching artist, I bring my expertise in professional television production to the classroom. I teach production skills such as shooting and basic editing. One of the most crucial skills I can impart that students can learn through the film making process is the art of collaboration. Working in a production unit, everything is shared: equipment, ideas, time, and control. Collaboration makes a unit successful and it is a skill that students can bring into many life arenas after the production is complete.

Recent Projects: Residency with the Coachman Family Center 2005-2006. Worked with middle school and high school age children to produce a video documentary, “The Making of the Purple Path.”

Residency with the Shelter Program of Westchester, August 2005. Worked with young adult men to produce a video documentary.

Specialized training: Studied at the Art Students League, the International Center of Photography and the Art Institute of Boston where she spent one and a half years of studying the masters. She also made copies at the Metropolitan Museum. This gave Ronnie the opportunity to analyze master works and get used to working in public, among crowds. She was the only copyist allowed to work in the Origins of Impressionism exhibition, during which she developed a greater facility for designing and carrying out her own original paintings. At the end of all this, she was given unusual permission to do two original paintings portraying two of the museums galleries.

Ronnie Levine has turned her painting ability into a business doing portrait commissions of homes and people. She has sold many of her street scenes and landscapes. She has also displayed her work at the Warner Library and many galleries in the area. In addition to painting, she writes about art for Tarrytown’s River Journal. She takes great pleasure in doing her work and sees the artistic pleasure she gives to other people as a highlight of her life.

Recent Projects: Senior workshops at Neighborhood House, aided by a grant from the Westchester Arts Council - dealt with materials, composition, light and shadow, and working from the model. One senior told Ronnie that she was able to move from abstraction to figurative art, as she had long desired, through her informative lectures and encouragement. Ronnie has approached this population with new ideas and new abilities.

A 10-session workshop for 10 year olds at Transfiguration School covered color mixing, composition, and perspective. Several of the parents were very pleased with the class and said their child would not miss it.

Ronnie also takes students at her studio in Tarrytown, with ages ranging from 6 to 80 years old.

Specialized Training: Apprenticeship with animator Noureddin Zarrinkelk in Tehran, Iran; training in producing animation for educational television; printmaking training with the late Roberto DeLamonica at the Art Students League, NYC; study and production of painted animation-under-the-camera at NYU; Masters Degree in Near Eastern Language and Literature; developed and implemented teaching of direct, low-tech animation; currently completing an MS degree in Elementary Education grades 1-6 and Students with Disabilities; trained and experienced in teaching math, science and ESL; trained in sculpture; multilingual; training in the School Arts Rescue Initiative by the Kennedy Center.

Deborah Maier has a long background in sequential art and language projects including work shown in the East Village of NYC and in Westchester. The tendency to use verbal as well as visual narrative has led to training in writing fiction and poetry, to publishing, and to performing personal writings at the Bowery Poetry Club and Cornelia Street Café, NYC.

Recent Projects: Last spring Maier consulted with teachers and math professors to develop an after-school course for gifted & talented elementary students exploring connections between art and mathematics. The group explored the making of art based on geometry and patterns through colorful, 2-dimensional tessellations, the notions of ‘impossible objects’ through making moebius mobiles, and movement and time by creating flip-books, or ‘pocket movies.’

In an animation residency with 4th grade ESL students, youngsters made their own films by hand. They created their own stories, storyboarded them, made cutout figures with paper and Wikki Stix, animated under the camera while furnishing the sound track with dialogue and sound effects. The objectives were all amply met - introduce concepts, language, and practice of animated filmmaking; enhance students’ expressive powers, cooperative-learning skills; and assess those gains.

Specialized Training: Teacher of drawing and painting; skilled in knitting and crocheting; sculptor in wood, metal, and paint.

Throughout the last 30 years, Susan Manspeizer has exhibited her wood sculptures, both in the United States and abroad. Recent exhibitions include a solo show at Silvermine Guild Arts Center in Connecticut and a two person show at Walter Wickiser Gallery in Chelsea. Her sculpture “Love” was selected for the permanent collection of the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum in Rutgers, NJ; GE World Headquarters exhibited five pieces of sculpture during a six month period in Connecticut.

Manspeizer’s piece “Tsunami Women Weep” received the Gretchen Richardson Memorial Award from the National Association of Women Artists in 2006. She has always admired the strength and devotion of women who have risen in their fields to make a difference. “Women have the ability to create new life and bring forth new generations of human beings. My new body of work is a tribute to women, their caring nature, their ability to nurture, and to make contributions to society in a personal way. I set out in my sculptures to show the universality of these emotions. Using wood, I bend and manipulate the pieces until I find those that respond to my thoughts.”

Recent Projects: Collaboration is not a new concept among artists, but when it is a mother and daughter, it becomes a special event. Susan Manspeizer and her daughter Beth, an actress and director, combined two artistic disciplines culminating in an original puppet show at the Hutchinson School in Pelham. Large felt puppets on sticks were stuffed and decorated to reproduce the fish in marine life as the second grade students explored conventional and non-traditional materials. They combined their knowledge of specific kinds of fish with their artistic representation of them.

After 25 years as a graphic designer/art director, Mary Dee Merell became aware of Book Arts. In this electronic age, she was captivated by the hands-on experience of making books. With Karin Reetz, she has developed a program of adapting classical book arts tools and techniques for easy and fun books that children can create in the classroom. She uses papers from many different countries, and binding styles from many different cultures.

Recent Projects: Book Making Residency, 2nd grade, Museum School, Yonkers. The children were studying the Hudson River, and the creatures that live in and around it. Each child created a shape book that looked like the particular animal he/she was learning about (seahorse, eagle, dragonfly and muskrat). The books were used to write information about that particular animal, and then displayed at the Hudson River Museum. The children were very proud of their books and they really were amazing!

Born in New York City, Ron Mineo was brought immediately into the art world. His father Sebastiano Mineo, a Sicilian born artist came to America to establish and operate one of the largest private art schools in NYC, Art Life Craft Studios. It was born, like Ron, in the Fifties when current art trends made New York the “artistic capital of the world.”

In his teens Ron spent most of his time in the Art School learning every aspect of the fine arts. He managed the small bronze foundry created by his father to cast students’ work and supervised the school’s inventory of art materials. This early exposure gave Ron a profound reverence and understanding of these art materials and their potential applications.

Ron has been the Director of Art Life Studios for twenty years. Teaching to a broad spectrum of students has made Ron aware of the dynamic teaching style he had seen his father use for so many years. It also sharpened his focus on the learning process and taught him the difference between a good teacher and a great one.

Recent Projects: Mineo conducted a residency for the Hudson River Museum relating to its recent Body Parts exhibition. The residency was held at his studio and at Roosevelt High School in Yonkers; the results were not only displayed in an exhibit in the Hudson River Museum but were also featured on the Yonkers Cable TV network. (Please visit the above web page to see pictures of this residency.)

He has traveled extensively through out South America and his cross-cultural experiences are vital to his teaching and work as a professional artist. He has received numerous awards and grants such as the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation grant “Artist as Catalyst” for his work with communities. Through the Institute for the Arts in Education, PA he has worked with school district teachers to enhance visual arts curriculum.

Recent Projects: “Semilla Arts Initiative” is a grassroots initiative that uses art as a catalyst for social change. It was founded in 2007 as a reaction to the social conditions in an underserved area. School residencies include: projects such as 17 ft carved Totem Poles, Murals, Mosaics, Ceramic sculpture installations, mask making, bookbinding, etc. Community projects include: creating community parks, children’s garden, murals, wooden sculptures, metal installations and community festivals. In the past two years he has designed and painted five large-scale public murals with the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia.

In Brazil where he spent eleven years, he was the co-founder of “Casa de Cultura Santa Tereza” a community based art center in an under-developed neighborhood. Through out his twenty-year career he has worked with people of all ages, backgrounds, and social classes. Recent Projects: The Gates of Highview. This project was a response to Christo’s The Gates Project in Central Park. We made the Gates of Highview School. The Gates were six foot high and made to walk under like the original concepts. The class was studying goods and services so they researched where the paint, fabric, and wood came from and how they are made. Drawings were made of the story and developed into paintings illustrating the process. These pictures and words were painted onto the fabric so that the story can be read as you pass through.

Ms. Philips has been immersed in ceramic arts for over 30 years and has studied in many of the world’s important “kiln towns,” including Seto and Bizen in Japan and La Bourne, France. She began with mentor Paulus Berenson and went on to study with such notable potters and ceramic sculptors as Betty Woodman, Jun Kaneko and Arnie Zimmerman.

Ms. Phillips has worked with students in all age groups, from kindergarten to seniors in nursing homes. She has extensive experience with learning-disabled students through BOCES and other programs. In the spring of 2000, her work with a blind student earned a spotlight on national television. She has developed many techniques and curricula for getting people involved in the creative process through clay. These include tile-making, to encourage individual interests within a group project; making whistles, to explore and celebrate the history of other cultures, and using functional ceramics to teach the relationship of design and technique.

Recent Projects: “Stories and Souvenirs of Cortlandt” ceramic mural was a collaborative effort by myself and Cortlandt Senior Clubs. It was installed on a 180’ retaining wall outside the community center of Cortlandt, NY as part of a Westchester Arts Council municipal challenge grant. The mural represents the stories and important aspects of personal lives and local history. Hundreds of ceramic impressions and original clay forms were created, glazed and assembled into grouted panels.

A native of Westchester, Denise Proctor’s work has appeared in Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Lillie Rubin, The Broadway, and the Metropolitan Opera, to name a few. She showcased her bridal collection on Fox 5 TV and for the past five years has had success participating in the annual Westchester Bridal Expo held at the Westchester County Center. She has had exposure in The New York Times, Essence Magazine, The Westchester Wag, The Journal News, and The Pelham Post. ArtsWestchester and the Pelham Art Center (where she has taught for five years) have displayed her students’ work with much acclaim.

Recent Projects: Proctor prepares children to become designers or have fun learning design. She trains 9-16 year old children to draw fashion figures, instructs them on textile design and clothing sketching. They put together professional fashion portfolio with front & back views. The work is critiqued by boutique owner Robert Broche of the Elephant’s Trunk in Mt. Kisco. The pattern maker critiques the work from a pattern perspective and this validates the children’s efforts. They are then ready to pursue FIT or Parsons Fashion Classes for juniors.

Specialized Training: Matt Pungello’s love for his craft and his eagerness to teach others of his skills and patience, have made him a favorable candidate for working with a variety of people- from troubled youth to adults with developmental disabilities and senior citizens.

His hard work was seen by his professors at Westchester Community College, who subsequently hired him to produce, direct and edit a video for 25th Anniversary of the Communication and Media Arts Department. Such projects led to bigger things like his work with VH1, where he edited a commercial reel for Round House Media.

Recent Projects: For almost two years, Matt Pungello has been working with SPARC, Inc., a not-for-profit special program that provides various services for youth and adults with developmental disabilities. Operating a class called SPARC TV, he teaches the adults how to film, edit and produce video programs. After the videos are complete, they are then uploaded to the internet for family and friends to view.

For the past three years, Pungello has been involved in a program called Story Arts, a collaboration between Westhab and ArtsWestchester. As part of the Story Arts project, he taught young adults how to edit and produce videos. These videos combined highlight the work of the Story Arts program. Pungello is also responsible for co-creating ArtsWestchester’s TV show, “ArtsNews TV” which airs monthly on Cable TV and on New York 1, and a video representation of the widely known project, Soles of the Movement, an installation by artist Chris Burns that symbolizes the Civil Rights Movement.

Specialized Training: Karin B. Reetz studied at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. She has a background in architecture and Ikebana – the Japanese art of flower arrangements. She took her first bookmaking class in 1997 at Sarah Lawrence College’s Early Childhood Center. Since then, she has studied with a number of book artists from The Center for Book Arts in New York City.

By adapting classical bindings from all over the world, each book is carefully designed to meet the client’s expectations. The use of fine book cloth and interesting paper makes each book a unique work of art. Furthermore, Karin’s experience with teaching children and adults of all ages and abilities has inspired her to develop many different book structures. She teaches staff development workshops and leads art residencies in numerous schools throughout Westchester. The books created by the children have been exhibited at the Katonah Arts Museum in Katonah and at The Hudson River Museum in Yonkers among others.

Recent Projects: Book Making Residency: 2nd grade, Museum School, Yonkers. The children were studying the Hudson River, and the creatures that live in and around it. Specialized Training: Masters of Fine Art and Art Education, Art Staff Development Classes Educator. Ms. Ross has been lecturing and exhibiting handmade paper and pulp paintings throughout the United States since 1978. She has been a guest lecturer at the NY Botanical Gardens, Mamaroneck School District, Dieu Donne Papermill in NYC, Silvermine Guild Arts Center in CT, schools in Westchester County, Connecticut, Rome, Italy and Athens, Greece. She trained teachers for Queens District 28 at the New York Museum of Art and had a studio residency at New Rochelle High School.

Papermaking, completed in a short period of time, provides an immediate sense of accomplishment and bolsters self-esteem & creative development. She has taught curriculum through the arts and also art for art’s sake, believing both are vital for learning other disciplines.

She has conducted a paper-making studio and residencies including: The Arts Education: A Common Ground for Learning conference, sponsored by the NYS Alliance for Arts Education; Dows Lane School in Irvington; French American School of New York in Larchmont; Woodlands High School for the Greenburgh Empire State Partnership project; and a mural residency at the Van Cortlandt Middle School in Croton, where she was selected as the first of four residency artists for an intensive year-long Arts Partners program for 6th graders.

Recent Projects: Ms. Ross and 6th grade students created a permanently installed mural at Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School in Croton-on-Hudson, New York. She began with a slide lecture of the history of papermaking. Next, students made two pieces of 5 ½” X 8 ½” “papyrus-like” paper of cotton and yellow flower petals. On one paper students wrote their first and last names in hieroglyphics. On the other, Egyptian imagery was researched by students, transferred and colored on the second paper in colors used by Egyptians. The final hanging contains a work from every 6th grade student.

“As a teaching artist, I am offering my gifts as a personal creativity trainer. My interest is in helping people discover and develop their own personal creativity. If a person has the desire to create art, then it is possible. My ability to motivate and encourage individuals through various exercises and projects has resulted in individuals finding their “inner artist,” thus opening new avenues for expression. As a result, some wonderful art work is created along with the added benefit of an increased self-worth.”

Recent Projects: Junk art workshop with the Adult Day Program participants at the Ross “Y” in Mount Vernon. Utilizing scraps and recyclables, the seniors, who were frail and impaired (some physically and some cognitively) were able to make things that were original and personal. In addition to working with the clients, Rudnick-Kane conducted staff training to help them learn new ways to implement art projects that can awaken and stimulate the inherent creativity in the elderly. Through this process, they were able to see the potential for creativity using free and inexpensive materials that would have otherwise been thrown away.

Mohegan Lake Social Club Mural Project, Summer of 2005. The participants chose the theme, then each of them drew several interpretations of “Home.” As a group they figured out the layout and composition which they drew onto paper and began painting. The most exciting (and potentially difficult) part was painting in some of the areas drawn by their fellow muralists, not just their own. In the end the completed murals were beautiful & the artists felt really good about their accomplishments, as well as their “artist-in-residence.”

Ezra has been an assistant teacher for over three years and is enthused about getting back in front of a class.

Recent Projects: Surrealist mural. Pre-school students at the Bolounous Montessori Pre-school learned to understand that pictures do not always represent reality. They learned ideas of chance.

Video workshop. High school students at Westchester Manhattanville Magnet Academy learned to shoot on digital video camcorders as well as edit movies in Apple I-Movie and Final Cut Pro. He helped students in all aspects, teaching them to act, direct, shoot, plan, write, edit, and add effects. The final pieces were 5-15 minute short video movies produced by each group of 3-5 students.

Anatomy workshop. Middle school students at Yonkers Middle/High School. Students learned to draw the human skeleton, with focus on the facial structure. Recent Projects: Colonial Times Project, all 4th grade students, Hillside Elementary school, Spring 2007. The teaching team wanted a costume project to tie the various strands of the Colonial curriculum together. After an interactive class discussion and studying the research, students worked in pairs on a plan with specific details of their colonial person’s life and an idea of the period’s clothing. In the three sessions they used colored paper, tape, trim, and fabric in a collage to style their colonial person on the brown paper body (on a 3’x4’ white board) provided. After completing the costume, the students went back to their notes to create a historical fiction story or journal entry about their colonial person. The collage technique allowed students of varying abilities to successfully complete the project and inspired many wonderful essays. The school displayed the finished Colonial Project, with their writings attached, at the 4th grade Graduation ceremony.

Specialized Training: BA Sculpture, Connecticut College; MST Art Education, Pace University. Jeannie Thomma is an artist, teacher and entrepreneur. For more than 10 years, she has worked within the public school systems and at private art centers around the region

Specializing in felting, Thomma shares her enthusiasm and knowledge about the creative process of making hand-felted wool works of art with students from age of four to eight-four. She exhibits her fiber art nationally, and sells her work though representation in galleries and master-artisan catalogues. She also maintains juried membership affiliations with numerous regional art centers.

Felting is an ancient craft in which cleaned and dyed wool fibers are layered to create a design...yielding a work of art. Felted ‘paintings’, bags, and 3-D flowers are just some of the limitless types of art into which the wool can be transformed. Here’s how the process works: through the addition of hot soapy water, and a bit of muscle (participants, get ready for some light exercise!), the colorful wool fibers are agitated and caused to shrink. This process allows the individual fibers to knot-together and become a single piece of strong fabric.

Recent Projects: Artist in Residence, Ridgefield Academy, Ridgefield CT. Students from grades 2-8 had the opportunity to create group and individual felted works of art. This two week long creative frenzy culminated in a beautiful art exhibit of over 100 works of felted-wool art! The art teachers at RA continue to work with their students in this previously unexplored medium.

Visiting Artist, Side-by-Side Kindergarten Class, Norwalk, CT. Returned for a second year to spend a morning with the Kindergarteners and teach them how to create a piece of wool fabric using roving. Two hours later, a beautiful collection of hand-felted wool art could be seen dancing across a clothes-line through the middle of their classroom—what a success it was!

Specialized Training: Eric ZORK Alan is one of only 4 National Slam Poets to live in Westchester. He is a six time National Slam Poet competitor, and is probably best known for standing on chairs. He is also known for gratuitously dropping names... like that he is the only poet ever to have his book [appropriately called “I am NOT a poet”] blurbed by Davy Jones, Dobie Gray & Wild Cherry. Zork has been featured at the hottest poetry venues in America including Chicago’s legendary Green Mill where slam started. He has toured across America visiting high schools and colleges in his mission to make more poets. He performs at and hosts ZorkSlams [student based events] at Barnes & Noble Bookstores nationwide. On the road, Zork visits high schools conducting workshops on penning & performing poems and then creates special bookstore events with multiple schools sending spotlight poets to showcase their newfound performance skills. Zork is also SlamMaster for the first ever Westchester National Slam Team and host of the two largest poetry series in Westchester County.

For the past 3 years Zork has worked with the White Plains Public Library and ArtsWestchester to import the very best slam poets in the world to Westchester. In 2007 he and the Westchester National Slam Team headed for Austin, TX. Zork takes great pleasure in touring the country showcasing & spotlighting local high school talent at Barnes & Noble bookstores coast to coast.

Recent Projects: At area schools including Westchester Community College & Danbury High School, Zork has conducted workshops for students that feature writing exercises to unlock their creative juices. Once new poems are penned, they are given tips on how to best perform them. Zork’s regional poetry series gives students the perfect place to practice what they have learned in the real world.

Kate Gallagher is a poet and writer, teacher and editor. She has participated in workshops at the University of Iowa, the International Women’s Writing Guild and the Hudson Valley Writers Center. She has read her work at public readings in NYC and Westchester. Several of her poems appeared in the anthology en(compass) in 2004. She is a member of the Poetry Caravan and teaches workshops for adults and children.

Recent Projects: Exploring how we “find” our stories, poems or ideas, Gallagher often uses sensory stimuli as triggers, emphasizing that it is sensory details that make our writing come alive. She has used the following exercise with 3rd-5th graders, teenagers and adults and it is always fun and enlightening. She brings in small bottles of various scents: mouthwash, cinnamon, coffee, perfume, etc. Passing these around the table, students write down anything that comes to mind, without trying to identify the scent. Choosing one that is particularly vivid, they write a memory piece using sense imagery and detail. The smell of baby powder became a poem about a baby brother’s arrival; pickle relish became a piece about a backyard barbecue; and lilac was about an Aunt Louise from Arkansas. We made a collection out of these pieces, noticing that the same smell might trigger completely different memories for different people. A lesson in individuality!

Arlene Oraby strives to cultivate creativity and imagination with both children and adults. From crafting my own poetry, prose, and painting, he enjoys encouraging people to explore and express their emotions through interdisciplinary projects, blending writing with the arts of collage, painting, drawing, and so on. Oraby believes each individual’s view of life is special and unique. Through his many experiences as a teacher of Creative Writing, English, and Art, he advocates being flexible and adapting to people’s changing needs.

“Art is a way of portraying the truth and beauty in life. And it’s through art that we allow ourselves to experience feelings and the essence of being. It enhances the search for discovery of our inner self. Through the arts, who and what we are on Earth is personified through the use of color, lines, shapes, forms, words and phrases.”

Specialized Training: Certified Poetry Therapist

Karen Rippstein is a certified poetry therapist, journal writer, and facilitator of Creative Inspirations©. Discovery and empowerment received from her journal allows her to inspire those she works with to create a writing space of their own to find comfort, safety, and solitude in a world that is often chaotic. Whether the goal is to collect word “seeds” for creativity, or random thoughts for self-disclosure, Rippstein witnesses how writing builds confidence, allows risk-taking, promotes goals, and celebrates growth.

Through her association with ongoing peer groups, the National Association for Poetry Therapy and its annual conferences, Rippstein been able to model methods and develop attributes as a creative/expressive writing facilitator with emphasis on the process not the product. Workshops may be tailored with core subjects such as history, literature, science, and mathematics.

Recent Projects: Creative writing and poetry workshops at high schools, medical and community colleges, senior centers, a state park, a psychiatric hospital, and a museum.

“Illuminations of Creative Inspirations”©. During this community and intergenerational outreach project for a local high school students selected a 19th century portrait post card and developed a story while exploring their own transformation through the character. They then created a collage about the character to consider possibilities for a plot to their story. In their notebooks, they collected snippets of observations about people with whom they interacted - their conversations, what they wear, what they do, and how they behave. The project encouraged creative thinking over several sessions as the students responded to poetry, prose, and artwork. When finished, the project was presented to senior residents of an assisted living facility in White Plains.

Recent Projects: The Revelators Dance Troupe was created by Marion Archer. She began the Revelators 30 years ago after being inspired by the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater of Harlem. The teaching began at Washington Junior HS and then moved to the Boys and Girls Club of Mt. Vernon. The original inspiration was spiritually based, however, as years progressed Archer expanded her teaching to include various dance forms such as African, tap and dances from other countries and cultures.

The Revelators Dance Troupe has experienced many transitions and currently consists of 25-30 girls, young ladies and three teachers. It has also evolved into dance troupes throughout the country including Charlotte, NC. Two of her sisters have branched out and started their own dance troupes. Other alumnae have also done the same. They credit their programs to the fire lit by the passion Marion Archer has for dance.

After years of volunteering her services for the Boys and Girls Club, Archer’s avocation became her vocation when she was hired by the Mt. Vernon Board of Education to teach dance at Nellie Thornton Elementary School. She taught African Dance and the art of communication through dance. She currently is working with Cecil Parker Elementary School and Eastchester Schools. Over the summer she teaches dance at the Fairview Greenburgh Community Center. She teaches three forms of African Dance- from West Africa, from Liberia and from Ghana.

This year Archer has taken her Dance Vision to a new height. She collaborated with Anne Bryant to create a play about Dance during the Harlem Renaissance. She considers it to be one of the most successful performances she has directed.

Dance and creative movement connect the body and mind, effectively engaging the student and developing an increased focus on learning. The body stores mental and emotional problems in the form of muscular tension and constrained movement patterns, which can affect learning negatively. Moving rhythmically eases muscular rigidity, diminishes anxiety, and increases energy. Moving creatively encourages self-expression and opens up new ways of thinking and doing.

Through ArtsWestchester I have taught creative movement residencies at The Cornerstone Therapeutic Preschool Program in Peekskill, as well as at a New Rochelle elementary school and a drop-in-facility in Ossining for adults with mental illness. I am currently on faculty at ArtsCaravan in Katonah teaching modern dance. In addition, I continue to teach international dances to elementary school students and perform an original program, Dances Around the World, at venues that include public schools, local libraries, and senior citizens’ centers.

As an artist, ArtsWestchester invited my dance company, Thoughts in Motion Dance, to premiere “Visions of Vincent’ at the inaugural season of the Arts Exchange Performing Space. “A Long Road Home,” a dancer/theater piece about returning Iraq war veterans received an Arts Alive Grant from Arts Westchester. Drawing on this extensive experience in choreography, which The New York Times described as having “the quality of a short story,” I helped students and adults learn to work with their bodies and develop their ability to express thoughts and emotions through movement.

My belief in the ability of each individual to find movement meaningful and enjoyable has resulted in a wide range of successful experiences, from helping preschoolers engage in creative play to teaching third graders the Japanese Bon dance and showing wheelchair-bound patients how to move to music while sitting.

Specialized Training: Jeanie Gayeski received an MS in Elementary Education from Hunter College and a BA in Art History and German from the University of Rochester. She has also studied Creative Art Therapy at Pratt Institute, received certification from the Dance Education Laboratory at the 92 St. Y and participated in a diverse range of workshops, improvisational groups and performance opportunities. She continues to study dance and other movement forms, and has most recently added yoga to her work with children.

Gayeski has been teaching in the field of arts education for 10 years. Her experience includes work in a variety of settings with a diverse range of populations. As a dance educator, she has most recently worked at Steffi Nossen School of Dance in the Moving Wheels and Heels Program, as a teaching artist at Art Connection, and the Gillen Brewer School. Her five years at The Gillen Brewer School, an independent school in New York City for children with special needs, included acting as head of the arts department. In that role, she facilitated an innovative dance curriculum that could support both the visual art and music program as well as the overall academic goals of the school.

Her certification as an Elementary Educator provides a unique template from which to design meaningful dance instruction in collaboration with classroom teachers and other professionals. Whether as teaching artist in a school or community setting, Jeanie creates a safe atmosphere of all students to explore basic dance concepts and their individual movement potential. She is a lifelong student and is currently interested in how observation and assessment through the use of video can impact the learning and choreographing process for students and herself.

“Dance is life experience. As an art form, dance has become a very popular creative medium for people of all ages. As a social dancer, a professional dancer/performer and dance teacher, it has been a pleasure for me to be able to share my extensive dance training with my community. Dance is both physically and mentally challenging, but it also introduces us to a new world of socialization through movement. For children, adolescents and teenagers, it teaches social skills and respect for one another. For adults it can serve as a favorite pastime and a form of exercise, and for seniors in particular it can magically ‘make them feel young again.’ And for all age groups dancing helps build confidence, coordination and self esteem.”

Recent Projects: Lariccia’s dance workshops offer a stimulating environment for all age groups, providing a fun and engaging day of dance. She offers flamenco, belly dancing, salsa, merengue, tango, swing, and more. For large groups, she is assisted by other dancers. A workshop consists of dance instruction and a short performance by the instructor(s) and students. In a short time, everyone can learn simple dance steps that they can practice with each other and then even attempt their own performance.

Recommended Populations: Elementary, Middle & High School, Senior Adults, Youth w/ social & behavioral challenges

Availability: Mornings, Afternoons, Evenings, Weekends

Specialized Training: Matt Turk is a veteran performer who has engaged audiences around the world, both as hard-rocking bandleader and acoustic folk troubadour. A soulful vocalist who first picked up the guitar in grade school, Turk also plays mandolin and adeptly combines various musical styles.

Turk graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. from New York University with a major in history and a minor in religious studies. As a member of The Hour he learned his craft in the fertile NYC jam-rock scene of the early nineties. He teamed up with Pete Seeger as part of The Street Singers, a group that taught folk music to schoolchildren in and around New York City. Turk was greatly inspired to write songs of social justice by Seeger and by his three-year stint working for God’s Love-We Deliver.

Recent Projects: As a solo artist Matt Turk has released three albums, including 2002’s highly-acclaimed “What Gives,” and 2006’s, “Washington Arms.” He released the free digital single, “The Fog of War,” which featured musical contributions from Seeger and Rob Morsberger. A video of “The Fog of War”, directed by W.L. Jackson was released on the internet in February 2008. Turk’s performance of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” with Matter Music and Gaby Moreno was produced by David Dobkin and appeared in the 2007 Warner Brothers film “Fred Claus” starring Vince Vaughn and Rachel Weisz. Turk co-founded the world music group Mandolin Caravan with drummer Kevin Hupp; their first album, Desert Soul, was released in 2003.

Matt Turk is a musician-in-residence for Manhattan’s Congregation B’nai Jeshurun. He is an ArtsWestchester roster artist and teaches folk music to homeless children in his community at Westhab’s Coachmen homeless shelter in White Plains NY. He is a member of the duo Gillen & Turk which released their first recording Backs to the Wall in May 2008.

How to Acknowledge ArtsWestchester

Include the funding credit for each program in all publications, announcements, press releases, invitations, and other materials related to the residency. The funding language is as follows:

This program is made possible through ArtsWestchester’s Arts Partners Program

with support from [fill in].

Additionally, the ArtsWestchester logo must appear on any printed materials produced in conjunction with the artist residency. Download the logo at www.artswestchester.org.

You may also contact ArtsWestchester’s education staff at (914) 428-4220 x 236, or [email protected].

PLEASE NOTE that each public acknowledgement of funders improves ArtsWestchester’s ability to continue receiving those funds. Please be sure to send ArtsWestchester a copy of any printed materials.

Reporting Requirements for Site Coordinators / Staff / Teachers

ArtsWestchester strives to keep paperwork to a minimum. To administer the program effectively, participating site coordinators, staff or teachers are required to review or submit the following:

Artist Selection Form. The Artist Selection Form informs ArtsWestchester that you have chosen an artist. Please note than an artist may not participate in a planning session for an Arts Partners residency until an Artist Selection form is submitted. You must return the Artist Selection Form at least two weeks before the planning session.

Planning Report. The Planning Report is filled out by the artist at your planning session. Once your planning session is over, both you and the artist sign one copy of the planning report and send it to ArtsWestchester prior to the start of the residency.

Final Reports. The final report is an assessment of the project. All participants - site coordinators, participating teachers/staff, and artists - should complete and return individual final reports.

Artist Voucher. Signing an artist voucher authorizes ArtsWestchester to pay the artist. Please carefully check the dates, and state whether dates were for full or half days. A signature on a voucher confirms that the service was provided as indicated. Artists may submit vouchers to ArtsWestchester once a month during the residency or at the conclusion of the residency.

Artists & Site Coordinators / School Staff: A Summary of Policies Concerning ArtsPartners Residencies

• ArtsWestchester supported residencies are intended to provide in-depth learning experiences. ArtsWestchester encourages residencies of more than three sessions. The more you want to accomplish, the longer the residency will need to be.

• One full residency day is limited to a maximum of fi ve, 50-minute sessions (or the equivalent) per day; half days consist of one to three 50-minute sessions in the morning or afternoon.

• Residencies require an in-person, on-site planning session with the artist and all teachers/staff who will participate.

• Residencies are collaborations. The coordinator and all other teachers/staff members involved in the residency should be present for all phases of planning and implementation. Allow as much fl exibility as possible for the residency’s design prior to planning with the artist(s).

• School/site coordinators must wait until a planning session has occurred and the completed planning report (including all required signatures) has been submitted to ArtsWestchester, in order to begin a residency.

• Each session of a residency involves the same participants. For example, a fi ve day, school based residency might involve fi fth-grade classes in each of the fi ve sessions (rather than, for example, two sessions with the fi fth grade and three with the fourth grade). We recognize that some community-based residencies, especially those at mental health facilities, have a

fl uctuating number of participants. The intent, however, is the same: to provide each participant with an opportunity of signifi cant duration.

• The maximum number of participants per session is 25. The smaller the group, the more meaningful the experiences will be.

• The school/site is responsible for providing appropriate space and facilities.

• Disciplining students is the responsibility of the teacher or site staff . State law requires teachers to be present during school residencies.

• Please return all forms and reports promptly. If a school is paying ArtsWestchester through BOCES, both the school and artist will be required by BOCES to complete their paperwork.

• When residencies are being paid through BOCES, ArtsWestchester must be noted on the forms rather than the teaching artist. Please contact ArtsWestchester Programs Coordinator to ensure that your BOCES paperwork is properly completed.

• Videotaping is not permitted without the artists’ prior consent.

• Unless otherwise noted and provided, ArtsWestchester funds support artist grants only. Schools/sites are responsible for materials, equipment, buses for related site visits, etc.

• In any publicity such as interviews, press releases, programs and materials related to an ArtsPartners residency, please acknowledge ArtsWestchester support. Please send a draft of all press releases, program acknowledgements, etc., to ArtsWestchester.
