Dear Friends in Christ,

Thank you for your support of Mundelein Seminary in the past year. As I begin my work as rector/president, I think of an illustrious predecessor who served as Mundelein’s rector from 1936 to 1945, Msgr. Reynold Hillenbrand. Hillenbrand’s passion was to explore the connection between liturgy and social justice, and he communicated that enthusiasm to a whole generation of Chicago priests. When I was a deacon and a young priest, I had the privilege of meeting some of these “Hillenbrand men,” including Father Lawrence Kelly, Father Joseph Kinane, Msgr. Jack Egan and Msgr. Bill Quinn. To a person, they were still on fire with the ideals that their rector had placed in them decades before.

The call of the last two popes has been for a “New Evangelization,” a proposal of the age-old faith in Jesus Christ risen from the dead to an increasingly secularized culture. Blessed John Paul II said that this outreach must be marked by new ardor, new expressions and new methods. I want to make Mundelein Seminary a powerhouse for the New Evangelization, a place where missionaries to a secular age are formed. As Hillenbrand set his students on fire for liturgy and social justice, I want to set our current seminarians on fire for this indispensable work.

We have a great faculty, a stunningly beautiful campus, a splendid tradition, terrific students and generous partners like you who pray for our seminarians and financially support our mission. I am fiercely proud of this place.

Please pray for me as I begin my work as rector and president of my alma mater, and know that I will keep you daily in my prayers as I thank God for your generous hearts.

Gratefully yours in Christ,

Very Reverend Robert Barron Rector/President

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

During my sixteen years as Archbishop of Chicago, one of my great privileges has been to work with the faculty and staff at Mundelein Seminary. Mundelein’s professors think with “the mind of the Church” and strive to form holy priests with a strong vision of and commitment to the good of the Universal Church. The University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary plays a vital role in the formation of our men to become priests who will serve the Church and God’s people with love and dedication.

Since accepting his assignment as Rector on July 1, 2012, Father Robert Barron has brought his trademark energy and enthusiasm for sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others to the job. His years as parish priest, professor of theology, author and television and radio personality have prepared him well for the task that lies before him; transforming Mundelein into a school of the New Evangelization, one where the way in which we transmit the Gospel message is as important as the message of the Gospel itself. As we all noted during the wonderful media coverage of the election of our new Holy Father, Pope Francis, the world is hungry for the truth imparted by the Catholic Church; we need to train our priests to share that truth with others, while never compromising it.

This annual report of Mundelein Seminary provides a broad overview of the generosity of so many people supporting this most important mission of the Church. Thank you for your financial gifts, without which we could not continue, as well as for your prayers for our seminarians. They gratefully remember our benefactors at daily Mass and in their daily prayers and devotions.

You and those you love are also in my own prayers; please keep me and the needs of the Archdiocese of Chicago in yours.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

Dear Friends,

The title of this Mundelein Seminary annual report, “A Call to Stewardship,” provides a summary of the prayers and financial contributions from all who support the education and formation of our future parish priests.

As Chairman of the Board of Advisors, it is my distinct privilege to work with a group of bishops, clergy and lay people who have invested their time and resources in striving to make Mundelein Seminary the best seminary in the nation. I am personally grateful to each member of our board for their countless contributions and professional guidance provided to Cardinal George and Fr. Barron throughout the year.

Our work continues with many projects yet to complete. With God’s help and your continuing response to “A Call to Stewardship,” we will accomplish great things for the Church.

Thank you, Board of Advisors and all our donors, from the bottom of my heart.

Gratefully yours in Christ,

Mr. William H. McEssy Chairman, Board of Advisors

About Mundelein SeminaryIn the 1920s, George Cardinal Mundelein and a young architect named Joseph McCarthy began planning for a beautiful campus just outside of Chicago. It would be an historic place for priestly study.

University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary

The University of Saint Mary of the Lake is regarded as one of the top universities for the education and formation of parish priests and Catholic parish leadership. The flagship program of the university is Mundelein Seminary, the graduate school of theology, named after the late George Cardinal Mundelein who built this campus in the 1920s.

Our size and scope

Mundelein Seminary is one of the largest Catholic seminaries in the country, with 174 seminarians enrolled from 30 dioceses from around the world. The University of Saint Mary of the Lake also includes the Institute for Diaconal Studies, the Institute for Lay Formation, the Institute for Ongoing Formation, Instituto de Liderazgo Pastoral and The Liturgical Institute.

Our degree programs

The Graduate School of Theology, operating under a charter granted by the State of Illinois in 1844, with accreditation by the Association of Theological Schools, confers three professional degrees and one research degree: 1) Master of Divinity (M.Div.) 2) Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) 3) The Master of Arts in Liturgy (M.A.L.) and 4) the Master of Arts (Liturgical Studies).

The University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary prepares candidates for diocesan priesthood. At the core of its mission, Mundelein Seminary prepares men to be priests of Jesus Christ, priest, teacher and shepherd. It

educates men for parish pastoral ministry as co-workers with their bishops in the service of the Catholic Church.

Father Ron Hicks (M.Div. ’94, D.Min. ’03) is a great example of the giving spirit of our alumni priests. As Dean of Formation at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary, he helps form and prepare seminarians for the priesthood in their final years of study before ordination. He is also passionately dedicated to a mission which cares for orphaned and abandoned children in Latin America.

Before starting his graduate study at Mundelein Seminary, he took a year to learn Spanish in Mexico working with Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH), a home dedicated to caring for orphaned and abandoned children in nine different countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, and serviced by another Mundelein alumnus, Fr. Phil Cleary (’79). And he fell in love. He fell in love with the mission, the children, and the way that he

experienced God’s love through them.

Since that first encounter, Fr. Hicks continued to stay connected with NPH on his vacations and breaks. After his ordination with the Chicago Class of 1994, he was assigned as Associate Pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Chicago for two years. He then became Associate Pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton Parish in Orland Hills through 1999. He was then appointed for five years as Dean of Formation for St. Joseph College Seminary, overseeing the personal and spiritual growth of the college seminarians for the Archdiocese of Chicago.

In July of 2005, with permission from Francis Cardinal George, Fr. Hicks moved from Chicago and rejoined NPH as their Regional Director for a five year term at the NPH orphanage in Honduras. NPH currently cares for more than

3,600 children world wide. “It feels like a big family,” Fr. Hicks mentioned before recounting a story about the kids: “One morning, we took the kids to the beach for the day. When they returned, there was a little boy, probably eight or nine years old, who had joined the group. He was homeless and living on the beach. He met and played with some of our kids that day and when he told them that he didn’t have a family, they said that he could be a part of our NPH family.”

In 2010, Fr. Hicks was named the Dean of Formation at Mundelein Seminary, overseeing the spiritual and professional mentoring, evaluation and accountability for 174 seminarians from 30 different dioceses. “I work with a great team on the faculty at Mundelein. They really help make this a special place for our seminarians.” He recently had dinner with some lay friends, all who attend the same church, and they were

talking about how much they liked their new associate pastor there. “They didn’t know that he was one of my students at Mundelein. I was filled with a sense of satisfaction and joy to hear good things about one of our newly-ordained priests.”

His highlight every year is the ordination of the new priests. “It is a time when I get the chance to take a step back and be proud of these men who are committing their lives to God. There are such good men here studying for the priesthood who fill me with great hope.”

Convocation for the Class of 2012

Our alumni continue to serve the Church as priests of Jesus Christ in parishes throughout the country and around the world. Over 40 men were granted graduate degrees from Mundelein Seminary in May of 2012. In Chicago last year, 14 men were ordained for the Archdiocese.

Over the past ninety years, the University of Saint Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary has graduated more than 3,500 priests to serve in dioceses throughout the country and around the world.

25th and 50th Anniversary Masses

On September 23, 2011, the University of Saint Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary and Francis Cardinal George welcomed the ordination Class of 1962 to campus for a 50th Anniversary Celebration Mass and dinner. The photo above shows how many bishops and priests are still serving our Church from that class!

Every year, Mundelein Seminary invites our alumni priests to celebrate their 25th or 50th anniversaries on campus with a Mass, hosted by Francis Cardinal George, Fr. Barron and the seminary community. This provides an opportunity for classmates to reconnect and share stories of their 25 and 50 years in the priesthood. It also gives our seminarians the chance to interact with these experienced priests and learn from their examples.

“In Service of One Another” Awardee

On September 13, 2012, Reverend William J. Zavaski was honored at our annual Golf Outing and Dinner with the Joseph Cardinal Bernardin “In Service of One Another” Catholic Humanitarian Award.

Fr. Bill Zavaski is currently the Pastor at St. James Parish in Arlington Heights, IL.

The event saw more than 500 people, including many of Fr. Zavaski’s current and former parishioners attend the evening’s dinner celebration on the campus of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary. We congratulate Fr. Zavaski with this award and thank him for his 43 years of priestly service to the people of God!

Sharon Harris loves the great outdoors. In fact, it was an outdoor fishing trip with St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville that first brought her to the Mundelein Seminary campus. The parish took a group of children to St. Mary’s lake in the center of the campus, and Sharon went along to teach the kids how to fish. “I remember how beautiful the entire place was. There’s nothing like it. And it is great to know that this is where our priests are trained and educated.”

Sharon is also very proud of her Catholic faith. She is an active member of her home parish, St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville, where she has lived for over 50 years and raised her four children. She is also involved with the Lumen Cordium Society through the Archdiocese of Chicago and is a member

of the Rector’s Circle, a donor society for the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

Through her generosity to Mundelein Seminary, Sharon has always looked to involve others. When she first decided to get more involved with Mundelein Seminary, she sponsored a table at the annual Evening of Tribute benefit so that a group of seminarians could go to the event as her guests. She now sponsors a foursome for the annual Golf Outing & Dinner and invites three of her girlfriends to join her. She wishes that there were more women golfers who participate in the event, but is thrilled to support the seminary and spend the day with friends out on the golf course.

Sharon is also very inspired by the young men she has met at Mundelein Seminary who have answered God’s call to the priesthood. “In this day and age when a lot of young men aren’t interested in becoming priests, I think that those who are ordained from Mundelein Seminary are wonderful men. The seminary has such a great reputation and great educators. It really is a special place.”

As a way to deepen her faith, every year, Sharon attends the Rector’s Advent Retreat, held on the first weekend of advent for the members of the Rector’s Circle on campus at the Conference Center. She says it is her “little retreat that I take every year for myself and gives me spiritual enlightenment in preparation for the Christmas season and the

New Year.” She also always attends the Christmas Concert, which features the Mundelein Seminarian Choir, to hear “the beautiful voices and music.”

In her spare time, she enjoys being outdoors on her property, where her horses and dogs roam next to her home, and spending time with her children and her very first grandson. She thanks God for all her blessings and is thrilled to be able to support the priesthood through her gifts to Mundelein Seminary.

Our alumni and supportersWhen you make a gift to Mundelein Seminary, you are joining more than 200 parishes and 25,000 benefactors who support and sustain the future of the priesthood. Thank you for your commitment to our our future priests.

Special Projects: Mall Restoration

When Cardinal Mundelein built our campus in the 1920s, he said that he wanted it to look like Heaven so that when the men departed here as priests, they had a vision of what Heaven was like. Since that time, this campus has only grown in majesty and beauty. Over the past decade, the Seminary has taken large steps to bring the campus into the 21st century, while maintaining the reverence of the original campus plan. Recently, this included a complete renovation of the Mall, the center of our campus leading down to the docks on the lake.

Annual Christmas Concert

Our 39th Annual Christmas Concert was held on the first Sunday of December. Rich Daniels and the City Lights Orchestra provided a fantastic band, and were joined by the Mundelein Seminary Choir. Once again, the crowd was so numerous that we had an overflow.

This free concert is a highlight for our community and a great kick-off to the Christmas season. It is supported in part by the Music Performance Fund as administered by the Chicago Federation of Musicians, Local 10-208 and private sponsors.

2012 Evening of Tribute

At our 2012 Evening of Tribute, Mundelein Seminary presented the “As Those Who Serve” Award to Fr. Robert Barron for his work as a faculty member for the past 20 years. Also at the Evening of Tribute, Cardinal George presented the “Christo Gloria” Award to Michael and Jackie Winn for their years of dedication, service and support. More than 500 family, friends and supporters turned out for this event whose proceeds go to support the Study Pilgrimage to the Holy Land for our third-year men and other needs of the seminary.

10 2011-2012 Annual Report

Fr. Robert Krueger graduated from Mundelein Seminary in 2012 and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago. He is currently an associate pastor of St. Bede the Venerable Church on the south side of Chicago, while he is also working on an advanced degree at Mundelein Seminary.

Bobby Krueger is originally from Long Grove, IL and attended Catholic school through 8th grade at St. Mary’s in Buffalo Grove. Growing up in a faithful family with “strong morals and strong character,” he didn’t think of a life in the priesthood until much later. Though looking back, he remembers his grandfather once telling him “Bobby, you’d make a good priest.”

After high school, he attended the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, and was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Newman Center at the university. It was through this group that he attended World Youth Day in Toronto in 2002 and heard Pope John Paul II speak to the crowds. It was there that he was inspired by the Holy Father, whose words “set me on fire for my Catholic faith. As soon as I returned, I began attending daily Mass and have never stopped.” Through the Newman Center, he was able to see other young people

seeking God’s will. “Because you’re in a secular environment, the desire to live your faith is bold.”

After he received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois, Fr. Krueger was accepted into Mundelein Seminary, as part of the first class to go through the two-year Pre-Theology program. This program was designed for men who had obtained an undergraduate degree, but needed additional education in philosophy prior to beginning the four-year Graduate Theology Program. In total, he spent six full years as a student at the seminary. “Every year was a gift,” he fondly recalls.

The entire experience at the seminary is completely devoted to religious training and education, which was a new environment for him. But it allows for “time to form yourself, grow in your ability to love the Lord and grow in your ability to pray.” Inspired by the remarkable faculty that he encountered here and the fraternity of his classmates, he got a “sense that they were preparing together for something significant” even from his first days on campus.

Even though six additional years of school seemed so far away when he began, looking back he says “it all

passes so fast.” Especially in the final, fourth year of study, he remembers it all coming together so quickly. “We had Diaconate ordination in November, we were serving in parishes on the weekends, and preparing for ordination.” In the final days leading up to ordination, he remembers that it was like “watching the Lord confirm what you’ve been preparing for all these years.”

Now as a priest in a parish on the south side of Chicago, he enjoys every minute of his ministry. “Everything I’ve done at Mundelein Seminary has prepared me well for the priesthood, but there is so much more to the reality.” Just thinking about the different aspects of his work: the baptisms, confirmations, visits to the sick, helping guide parishioners with spiritual direction, Fr. Bobby reflects, “my life is so cool. The Lord is so generous in His grace.”

In the Classroom

The graduate degree program at Mundelein seeks to build the capacity for deeper self-knowledge through the disciplined use of reason guided by the Rule of Faith. Intellectual formation seeks to help a man deepen his appropriation of the content of the Faith, understand it so as to penetrate its mysteries and prepare to share it with Christ’s faithful and the world.

Seminarians have unceasing opportunities to deepen their love for the Lord through daily Mass, Eucharistic adoration, praying the Liturgy of the Hours, and directed retreats. Every seminarian meets twice a month with his spiritual director. Seminarians have the opportunity to attend multiple retreats each year.

Parish Pastoral Internships

Our goal is to develop the leadership qualities of all candidates for priesthood. Not only is a priest a public leader entrusted to direct and guide a parish, he also is a religious leader who represents the larger Church.

In their second year at Mundelein Seminary, students are given a parish assignment and serve there with the pastor as a pastoral intern. They are given their first responsibilities within a parish and many form bonds with parishioners that last beyond their time there. It is a great opportunity for mentorship with an experienced priest and leadership development within a parish community.

Holy Land Study Pilgrimage

Each year, a group of third year seminarians make a study pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where they deepen their relationship with the Lord, as the Sacred Scriptures come alive for them.

The faculty joins them and “uproots” their third year of study to the Holy Land for an entire semester. This commitment to an entire academic quarter is unique among seminaries, and our students regularly say that it is a life-changing event. Being able to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and spend the time to make it their home, our seminarians are able to experience a deeper connection to the scriptures in preparation for the priesthood.

Service to the Poor

The seminarian will prepare for priestly life and ministry by engaging in a range of pastoral experiences. Mundelein’s program allows the seminarian to gain exposure to the variety of ministries and work that are common to diocesan priesthood. At the heart of Mundelein’s pastoral experience is a vision of service flowing from the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. These include opportunities to minister to the sick, visit the imprisoned, teach RCIA, and help the poor. Also, mission trips to Arizona or Africa are offered to seminarians. All seminarians participate in two, full-time internships: one is a parish of their home diocese and one in a hospital setting.

Our Future Parish PriestsMundelein Seminary currently educates and forms 174 young men for the priesthood, making us one of the largest seminaries in the country.

Dear Friends in Christ,

In its ninety years of existence, Mundelein Seminary has educated, formed, trained and inspired over 3,500 newly ordained priests to serve the Catholic Church and her faithful.

In recent years, Mundelein Seminary has not only opened its doors to the Archdiocese of Chicago but also, this year, included 29 other dioceses, nationally and internationally. Over 12 million of Christ’s faithful are annually impacted by our ministry and mission!

Our Board of Advisors joins you as a significant partner in that preparation and outreach to Christ’s Church through your support of the education and formation of our future priests of Jesus Christ throughout their seminarian years.

Your ongoing prayers and financial gifts make an indelible impact on our global Church because so many priests from around the country and the world are educated and formed here. They are then sent forth to teach all nations of the love of Jesus Christ.

What a privilege for me to meet people every day whose deep faith and belief in Christ and his priesthood sustains this great seminary. What a humbling experience to see how our seminarians pray for you daily as you graciously remember them in your prayers.

God has given us, in our Office of Institutional Advancement, the responsibility and challenge to connect the faithful with this most critical mission of our Church.

This “Call to Stewardship” Report is simply a reflection of your generous hearts. This document is also a reminder that a gracious God continues to bless His Church, assisted by your generosity, with caring and compassionate priests to be messengers of Christ bringing His love to the world.

God bless you for your spirit of faithfulness and love. There are many more challenges ahead!

Someone once said that you can judge the maturity of a society by how well it prepares for its great-great-grandchildren. We know that practically no one will ever see his or her great-great-grandchildren, much less have to explain the shape of the world they inherit. If we wanted, we could simply squander the world’s natural resources, let our educational, health and cultural institutions fall into disrepair and generally carry on as if we were going to be the last people on earth.

But we don’t do that. Most of us feel the tug of history, feel the need to be kindly judged by those who carry on. So we plan for generations of children we will never know...and plant trees under whose shade we’ll never sit.

Many planned gifts allow donors to personally benefit and leave behind a legacy. The most common type of planned gift, a bequest in one’s will or living trust, also offers estate tax benefits. Charitable gift annuities and remainder trusts pay an income to beneficiaries, and when the agreement ends, Mundelein

Seminary benefits from the assets that remain. Planned gifts might also come in the form of securities, or from an IRA account or life insurance policy. The list of possibilities is extensive.

In the past year, Mundelein Seminary launched a planned giving program. Its task is to make certain that the future of our seminary is on firm financial ground. In a sense, every gift we receive is “planned,” but our planned giving efforts are “future-focused,” and are designed to help our benefactors ensure that the Catholic Church of tomorrow will have well-trained, dedicated and holy priests to serve the faithful.

We often hear our friends remark, “I wish I could do more.” Planned gifts often provide them with such an opportunity.

Legacy. Our alumni priests are the best examples of our impact. What has your priest meant to you?

FacultyOur real sense of academic pride is generated by brilliant professors who challenge our seminarians with real-world problems and analysis, and by seminarians who rise to the occasion, eager not only to learn, but to apply what they learn as priests.

2011-2012 Annual Report 23

Rev. Kevin McCray, Class of 2013Archdiocese of Chicago: “It is with a full heart, and a heart on fire, that I express my gratitude for your continued and generous support, both financially, and for your unceasing prayers for vocations. I have felt your prayers sustain me during these last six years of seminary formation and have strengthened me in my preparation for the priesthood.” “May we all come to recognize Christ in the breaking of the bread, and in the faces of our fellow travelers and our fellow pilgrims. May our hearts continue to be set on fire to continue the Lord's work, and may we, as the disciples did, turn back on fire to Jerusalem, so that we may work together in the mission of the Church, so that all may know the love and salvation that comes from recognizing Jesus.”-------------------------------------------------------Thomas J. ByrneArchdiocese of Chicago: “When I look at what I've been truly privileged to undertake during my years at Mundelein, all I can say is ‘Who am I to be given such gifts?’ I am in gratitude for the financial and spiritual generosity of all those who made this education possible in whatever situation I find myself.” “May God bless you abundantly for your generosity.”----------------------------------------------

Rev. Michael WardenDiocese of Green Bay, WI ! “For a little over five years before entering seminary I worked as a tradesman. I came to understand in that time the value of having the right tools for the right job. A priest also needs good tools for the same reason. I want to take this opportunity to thank both the spiritual and financial benefactors of Mundelein Seminary. I am very grateful to those who have contributed in any way to helping equip us with the tools that we need in order to be good priests today. I know as I begin the continuing ministry of Jesus Christ that I have what I need now in order to manage the things that may arise within the day-to-day life of a priest. So, I thank you with deepest gratitude for providing for our work as priests in the Church. “----------------------------------------------Deacon Rodlin RodrigueArchdiocese of Chicago: “When I look back, I realize that my journey to the priesthood would have never been possible without people like you holding my hands along the way; I am taking this opportunity to extend my gratitude to all of you for your ongoing financial support and daily prayers. Because of your generosity, Mundelein Seminary is able to finance many programs that have helped me to grow both spiritually and academically so that I may become a good priest of Jesus

Christ. May the Almighty God keep bestowing many more blessings upon you and your family. I assure you of my prayers and I humbly ask that you continue to keep me in yours as well.”----------------------------------------------Rev. Mr. John Bosco SsekkomoArchdiocese of Kampala – Uganda: “The journey to the Lord’s altar is never travelled alone. It is only possible with help and companionship of others. For the same reason our Lord sent out the twelve two by two and also gave them an instruction to take nothing but a walking sticks—no food, no sack, no money in their belts.” “Right now I can testify that I came in the same way from Uganda. But my four years’ spiritual and formation journey here at Mundelein Seminary has been possible because of your companionship. Allow me to express my gratitude for the prayers and financial support you have given to me and my brothers at Mundelein.” “As I near my ordination to the priesthood of Jesus Christ and start serving His people in Uganda, I promise you my consistent prayers. I am quite confident that what Jesus said, ‘If anyone gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, then in truth I tell you, he will most certainly not lose his reward’ will be fulfilled in you. Please keep me in your prayers and may God bless you always.”

Thank you.In the past year, more than 25,000 people answered the call to support Mundelein Seminary with more than $4 million in total giving.
