WHAT IS PLAYWAY?

• The term “PLAYWAY” was first used by Caldwell Cook to describe his method of teaching English.

• According to him, good work is more often the result of spontaneous effort and free interest than of compulsion and forced application.

• Play way activity provides enough scope for child participation.

• It helps in developing the desire of values, habits and attitudes in children.

• Games • Dramatic play • Amusement games / watching others • Looking at pictures • Listening to stories • Rhymes and poems • Watching television• Sand play • Water play

GAMES

• Simple and lively games like guessing games, passing the parcel, musical chairs etc.

DRAMATIC PLAY• Children are given the freedom to exercise

their imagination and act, as they like. • For ex: like talking on a toy cell phone,

making sounds like an animal or bird, acting like mother, friends or teachers.

AMUSEMENT GAMES• Sometimes children enjoy watching others

performing the activities they cannot perform like watching a magician or others play.

LOOKING AT PICTURES

• By looking at pictures children learn to concentrate and try to seek more information of them by asking questions.

LISTENING TO STORIES

• Mothers and grandparents tell stories to children at home.

• But the teacher should develop the art of story telling and tell stories of home life, school life, animals and birds, good morals, historic and mythological persons in class.

RHYMES & POEMS• The teacher can extensively use rhymes and

poems to teach new concepts. • They should however be short, simple and

melodious.

WATCHING TELEVISION

• Some programmes on television are entertaining, educational and informative.

• The teacher should guide the children to understand what programmes are to be seen.

SAND PLAY

• It provides a lot of entertainment as well as brings out the skill and imagination of the child.

WATER PLAY• It provides great amusement as well as training to

children. • But it should be conducted under the supervision

of a teacher.

PRINCIPLES OF PLAYWAY

• Learning by doing,• In an atmosphere of complete freedom• Nearer to life situations,• Suited to the needs and interest of

students,• Free from authoritarianism,• Responsibility on children in the

learning process,• Ample opportunity for self expression.

ADVANTAGES OF PLAYWAY

• Physical development:Due to exercise• Intellectual development: The freedom of

expression gives scope for more imagination and inquisitiveness.

• Social development: The child learns social values like unity, brotherhood, co-operation, oneness etc.

• Educative values: general increase in the I.Q level as they learn things by doing.

• Emotional development: helps in establishing the emotions of children & helps to overcome shyness, moodiness, timidity and sensitiveness.

ADVANTAGES OF ADOPTING PLAY IN SCHOOLS

• Play way aims at making activities interesting.• The tough part of learning is made easy by the

introduction of elements of interest &motivation.• In all the progressive methods of education like

the Project method, Kindergarten Method, Montessori method, Dalton Method etc. the element of play way is found.

• It can be used in the practical teaching of different subjects like mother tongue, maths, history, study of nature, moral and social training.
