Cherries

About 2,000 yrs ago cherries were being cultivated in South East Europe and the Romans had at least eight named varieties at the time of Julius Caesar's rule. Sweet cherries may be divided into two groups the  firm-fleshed types known as Bigarreaus, represented by the Bing, Lapins, Napoleon, and soft-fleshed types known as Hearts, such as the Black Tartarian. Sour cherries may also be divided into two groups, clear-juice or Amarelle types, represented by the Montmorency, and colored-juice or Morello types, represented by the English Morello.  Cherries are one of the first  fruit of the season and a favorite of boys, birds and deer! Unlike most fruit trees, cherries don't need thinning to produce high quality fruit. Cherries are disease prone in poorly drained soils in climates with wet springs. Cherries can be summer pruned to 8 ft. for height control. This will aide in netting the tree if birds become a nuisance. Harvest cherries when fully colored. If rain threatens when cherries are nearly ripe, pick the tree to avoid fruit cracking. Because standard size cherries are so large and the roots more sensitive to wet, heavy soils, we have cherry trees on Colt, semi-dwarf or GM61/1 dwarf rootstock.

Bing Oregon 1870

Bing Cherry is the most popular sweet cherry; the standard for flavor. Bing Cherry is large, early season, heart-shaped, mahogany freestone fruits with firm, meaty, purple flesh. Great eaten fresh or canning. Needs another sweet cherry for pollination. If you only have room for one sweet cherry, try the Lapins, which is considered to be a self-fertile Bing.

Black Republican Oregan 1860 A parent of Bing cherry and a rare

find at farmers markets. Black Republican cherry is revered for its exceedingly rich, sweet, intense black cherry flavor. Both the deep purple color and distinct flavor carry through in black cherry ice cream or yogurt. Some say the flavor is "earthy" with notes of rose, almond and/or herbs. The first Black Republican cherry tree was planted by Seth Lewelling, a nurseryman, Quaker and abolitionist who chose the name Black Republican in promotion of his abolitionist beliefs. Fruit is medium-sized and of good quality; keeps and ships well.

Napoleon is a most delicious cherry, one of the best of all the Bigarreaus, whether regarding its great size, beautiful appearance, or particular richness of flavour. Napoleon cherries skin is pale yellow dotted with red, but as it becomes perfectly ripe these dots are lost in a beautiful deep red cheek, which overspreads the side exposed to the sun, leaving only a few yellow spots.  Flesh, very firm, white, and reddish at the stone, abounding in a very rich, sweet, and aromatic juice. It is also a prolific bearer
