83rd annual convention of the AFCA.
JANUARY 8-11, 2006 * WYNDHAM ANATOLE * DALLAS, TEXAS
President's Message
Welcome, fellow coaches, to the 2006 American Football CoachesAssociation Convention. AsPresident of the AFCA, I am very excited andhonored to preside over this prestigious event.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
I attended my first convention over 20 years ago and still rememberfeeling rather overwhelmed tosee so many coaches from all differentlevels. Any first-time attendee will have similar feelingssinceattendance has at least doubled since then. I can also say that in noway, shape, or form, did Iever imagine that some day I would be electedto serve on the AFCA Board of Trustees and actuallyreach the positionof President.
Time has flown since the 2004 President, Ken Hatfield of Rice U.,handed me the gavel at last year'sconvention in Louisville, KY. Ithas been an interesting and fun year. And I have to admit that Iamsorry to see my term come to an end. Executive Director Grant Teaff andthe AFCA staff havebeen fantastic. It is easy to see why thisAssociation has become so strong as the voice of thecoachingprofession.
Over the past year, the question I have been asked the most is,"How did a Division III coachbecome President of the AFCA?" Iusually reply with some type of humorous quip. But when reallypressed,I respond by saying that a number of years ago I made a decision to getinvolved and makemy membership to the AFCA a truly active one.
It is easy to take an event like our convention for granted, butwhen I began serving on variouscommittees, I saw how much went onbehind the scenes and how much work it took to make theconvention oneof the best. I also knew that as a Division III coach, we are oftenlooked upon as therunt of the litter and if there was a way to"outgrow" that perception, I wanted to make it happen.
I have often joked that I am probably the least known President toever serve the AFCA and I am notsure that will ever change. I do know, however, that from my first job as a junior high school headcoach to mycurrent position at Moravian College, I have been proud to be a part ofthis profession.
I still remember the phone call from Coach Teaff back in late 1998.He had told me that I was anominee for a vacancy on the AFCA Board ofTrustees and wanted to know if I would serve ifelected. I was a littleuncertain about the validity of the call because it had never crossed mymindthat I would ever have such an opportunity. After a few seconds ofsilence, I told Coach Teaff that Iwould be honored if chosen. Needlessto say, my excitement grew upon learning at the 1999convention that Iwas elected to serve on the Board.
So here it is, some six years later, and following this conventionI will assume the title of "PastPresident." I can honestlysay that though my term ends, my efforts with this Association willnot. There is so much we can do to make our game better and to make ourprofession stronger. Iwant to be a part of that. Though the spotlightwill long remain on Division I, I am glad to see thatDivision IIIfootball is slowly coming out of the shadows.
We all have different issues that confront us every year, but theone constant is that we all coachthe same game. I am proud to havecarried the title of AFCA President, but I have been equallyproud eversince I took on the title of "Coach."
Again, welcome to Dallas. Come and share time with your fellowcoaches from all over the country.Who knows, maybe you, too, willdecide to get involved, serve on one of our many committees, andthen... well, maybe one day you will be writing this letter to your AFCAbrethren.
