Dear Friend,
Our 45th year of service to youth has been full of growth and success for Boys & Girls Clubs and its members. I want to take a moment to highlight some of 2012’s most notable accomplishments:
First and foremost, we are currently serving 4,241 young people through our seven Clubs; 28% of which attend at least once per week. This is an important metric because regular attendance corresponds with academic success, a healthy lifestyle, and good character in Club members.
Three Club members won regional and national awards for artwork created through Club art programs this year; one of which was for digital photography—a first for the Boys & Girls Clubs in Wake County. Our Club members also displayed work of art at the Contemporary Art Museum in downtown Raleigh and gained renewed enthusiasm for their artistic pursuits.
We were also proud to have Kyndall Dysard, our local 2011-2012 Youth of the Year winner, chosen as a finalist at the State-wide Youth of the Year competition. She was applauded for her poise, dedication to the community, academic success and her lead-ership abilities—all characteristics which she attributes to her long-time involvement with Boys & Girls Clubs.
Opening a new 16,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Zebulon Boys & Girls Club is perhaps the most notable achievement of all. In comparison to the Club’s previous home, a modular classroom located in a school parking lot, this Clubhouse enables staff to deliver even more exciting programs for young people in the Zebulon area. Club members now have ample program-ming space including an art room, technology center, full-size gym, sports field, and kitchen of their own! A great deal of hard work, dedication, and collaboration made this possible through our Be the One Capital campaign—a $12 million effort to expand our organization and reach an additional 2,000 more youth in our community. The next step towards this goal will be to construct a new Teen Center adjacent to the Raleigh Girls Club and Raleigh Boys Club on Raleigh Boulevard.
The Club continues to be the difference in countless children’s lives in Wake County. Over and over again, we hear Club alumni say that the Club “saved their life” by offering them the structure, support, programs and opportunities that they needed to carve out the path towards a great future. With your support and the dedication of our incredible staff, board, and volunteers—GREAT FUTURES START HERE.
Thank you,
Kirk Parker Chair, 2012 Board of Directors

Academic SuccessOur Clubs offer effective programs that help youth explore their interests, build fundamental skills and think about continuing edu-cation beyond high school to prepare for successful adulthood.
“The Club is the best thing in the world!,” said Jill. Six-year-old Jill attends the Club every day and can usually be found in her favorite place of all—the Learning Center. Through programs like Power Hour, Goals for Graduation and Project Learn, Jill is already thinking about her future career as a vet-erinarian and developing skills that will help her succeed in the classroom and in life.
“ BECAUSE OF THE CLUB, I KNOW I CAN BE ANYTHING I WANT TO BE.”

THE ARTSArt Rooms at the Boys & Girls Clubs are bustling with activity year-round. This year, members created more than 2,000 works of art.
When Valentina came to the Club, she was a shy eight-year-old who kept to herself. But Valentina soon discovered the Club’s Art Room. Today, thanks to a love of art that was nurtured at her Club, Valen-
tina is a confident, creative young lady who thrives in school and at the Club.
Valentina now dreams of becoming a professional artist—one of her works even won top honors at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Im-
ageMakers Photography Exhibit in Atlanta!
“ WHEN I FIRST CAME TO THE CLUB MY GRADES IN SCHOOL WEREN’T THAT GOOD. NOW, I’M MAKING ALL A’S AND B’S!”
—VALENTINA, AGE 11

Character & CitizenshipLearning good character and citizenship is an essential part of Club programs.Youth for Unity, Kids Voting, Keystone youth leadership club and Torch Club help youth build a sense of connection with their community and build leadership skills.
Seventeen-year-old Kyndall DySard started coming to the Club when she
was in the 7th grade. At the Club, Kyndall has found more than just a place to hang out and get help with her homework, she’s found one of her true passions in life—helping others in her community.
As president of Keystone Club, Kyndall leads a group of teens who plan and implement service projects to help improve her neigh-
borhood. This year alone,
Keystone Club members
like Kyn-dall contrib-
uted more than 380 hours of direct service to the community, spear-
heading projects like canned food drives and conducting community clean-up projects.
Programs like Keystone Club have helped Kyndall build confidence, learn important teamwork and leadership skills and make a meaning-ful difference in the community. These skills have helped Kyndall excel in school and earn top honors at the Club, including being named the 2012 Boys & Girls Clubs of Wake County Youth of the Year. As Youth of the Year, Kyndall put her leadership skills into action, representing the Club in the community. After graduation, Kyndall plans to attend college to pursue a degree in Public Rela-tions, a dream that was fostered by caring adult mentors at her Club.
“ THANKS TO MY CLUB, I’VE LEARNED REAL-WORLD LEADERSHIP SKILLS THAT WILL HELP ME SUCCEED IN SCHOOL AND IN MY FUTURE CAREER. BEING PART OF THE CLUB HAS TRULY CHANGED MY LIFE!”
—KYNDALL, AGE 17
Healthy LifestylesStaying healthy and active is an important part of childhood. Programs like Healthy Habits and SMART Moves drug resistance training, and Healthy Places, Active Spaces give kids a positive outlet with fun, constructive activities while building healthy foundations that will follow them for the rest of their lives.
Seventeen-year-old Michael found just such an outlet at the Teen Center, where caring adult mentors have helped redefine what is

possible in his life. “There’s always something going on at the Club, and it’s a lot better than being at home or getting into trouble some-where,” Michael says.
Thanks to the Club, he has a safe, welcoming place to go to after school where he can get help with his homework, use technology in the Learning Center and even explore his passion for cooking through the Clubs’ Healthy Habits nutrition education program.
SPORTS, FITNESS AND RECREATIONSports, Fitness, and Recreation programs at our Clubs help kids understand good sportsmanship and build conflict resolution and teamwork skills. League sports and targeted fun fitness activities help kids stay active while building positive relation-ships with caring adults and other youth.

The donor receives an immediate charitable income tax deduction for a portion of the gift, and Boys & Girls Clubs contracts with the donor to pay a guaranteed lifetime income to one or two annuitants at a current fixed rate of between 5.0% (age 60) to over 9.5% (age 90+) based on the annuitants’ ages. Annuity payments can begin immediately or be deferred to a future date. This donation option gives the donor the opportunity to increase personal annual income or retirement income.

GIVING APPRECIATED ASSETSA charitable deduction for the income tax can be taken based on the fair market value of the stock at the time your gift is made. Gifts of low-basis stock can result in avoidance of capital gains tax. In some situations, a gift of closely held stock can allow you to maintain con-trol of the corporation while still claiming income tax deductions. A gift of appreciated real estate will allow you to avoid capital gains tax, as well as brokerage fees and closing costs.
GIVING LIFE INSURANCENew or current life insurance policies may be transferred or irrevo-cably assigned to the Boys & Girls Clubs as beneficiary, or you can retain ownership of a policy, pay the premium, and simply name the Boys & Girls Clubs as the beneficiary. Both have substantial tax benefits to you and your estate.
CHARITABLE REMAINDER AND LEAD TRUSTSA significant donation can be structured in a remainder trust with lifetime income for one or more beneficiaries and the remainder go-ing to the Boys & Girls Clubs or with the lifetime income going to the Boys & Girls Clubs and the remainder going to the beneficiaries. Trusts can be designed to meet your individual needs and provide savings on income, capital gains and estate taxes.
