IntroductionUnit heaters – integrated units of heating coil andfan – are primarily designed for heating of largerooms by means of hot air. This heating methodhas a number of advantages as far as space, opera-tion and economy is concerned.

• The unit heaters are easily mounted on bulk-heads or below decks, take up little space andcan be located to suit the arrangement of theroom.

• The hot air supplied is quickly mixed with theair in the room creating a circulating airstream, which distributes the heat to all partsof the room. This makes it possible to com-mence heating only a short time before theroom is put into use. This method provides aneconomical heating system for rooms, whichare not in constant use.

• The application of the unit heaters represents amost flexible heating and ventilating system, which can be changed and extended concur-rently with rebuilding.

• Furthermore, the system offers the possibilityof individual operation with varying heatingand ventilating requirements.

For these reasons the unit heaters form the idealheating system for machinery and store roomswith large deck heights.

The unit heaters are available in type VMA forboiler water, and type VLE for electrical power.

Unit heaters type VMA for boiler water are availa-ble in 5 sizes – all with heating coils. The numberof pipe rows in the heating coils is either 2 or 3.The largest VMA unit heater, the VMA-8, is alsoavailable with 4 pipe rows.

Unit heater types VLE for electrical power areavailable in 3 sizes. The capacity of the heatingcoils are 3 – 36 kW. Power supply and capacity areaccording to requirements.

Unit Heaters type VMA

Unit heaters type VMA use axial flow fans in com-bination with heating coils for air heating. Boilerwater acts as heating medium.

Overview

Application

For heating of machinery and storerooms on-board ships.

Range

The VMA is manufactured in 5 sizes with airflowfrom 0.2 to 2.2 m3/s and heating capacities from 3to 128 kW.

Construction – System

The basic unit is of compact construction incorpo-rating a motor, axial flow fan and heating coil in ajoint cabinet. The outlet of the basic unit is provided with airdistribution accessories for varying air patterns.Accessories are also available for the inlet side formixing fresh air and return air in several variants, plus filters.

Mounting

The VMA range of unit heaters can be mountedboth horizontally and vertically.

Materials and Surface Treatment

The motor and axial flow fan form an integratedpart of the unit.

Temperature Control and Frost Protec-tionThe heat emission of the units can be controlled inseveral ways:• By starting and stopping the fan.• Control of the air quantity by changing the

speed of the fan.• By controlling the water quantity either by

means of manually operated control valve orby means of an automatically controlled valve.

• By controlling the water temperature.

In installations where the inlet temperature of theair can be below 0 °C, frost protection of the heat-ing coil will be necessary.

Considering the comfort of the room, as well asthe operating economy, it is recommended thatheat emission is controlled by means of an auto-matic control system. The control is done either byregulating the fan speed or the water quantity.Frost protection of the system takes place by fit-ting a frost thermostat at the heating coil. At tem-peratures below the setpoint (usually +5 °C) thecut-out of the frost thermostat must cause stop-page of the fan. At increasing temperature thefrost thermostat will automatically re-activate thesystem.

Sound ConditionsThe sound emitted by a unit heater in operation iscalled the sound power level. It expresses theamount of energy in the sound. It depends mainlyon the fan output. See chapter “2.2 Sound” onpage 33 for more about sound and sound powerlevels in particular.

The following table indicates the sound powerlevel of the unit heaters at different speeds, di-vided into octave bands, and the sound pressurelevel in the stated conditions.

Regulation of Single-phase Motors

Single-phased motors are controlled using theNV515 thermostat. Optionally in combination

with the NV341 five-stage switch. Adding theNV341 allows for control of the fan speed andthereby the amount of noise generated when thesystem is in operation.

Automatic continuously thermostat NV515The NV515 is a 230 VAC 50-60 Hz thermostat ca-pable of keeping a preset temperature through en-gaging and disengaging of fans in one or moreunit heaters. Temperature regulation area is from0 - 40 °C.Furthemore, the thermostat has a built-in optionfor nighttime lowering, which is activated with an

external contact and results in a 5 °C temperaturedrop.

• Internal NTC sensor• Optional: Room sensor RF1 (e.g. remote loca-

tion)• Optional: Temperature sensor with 1.5 m sen-

sor cable• Two indicator lamps for operation and regula-

tion• Optional: Connection of external contact for

nighttime temperature lowering• Maximum load 10 A• Hysteresis 1 °C• Enclosure IP34
