I give the text of these in full (excepting that of the Popes)and also a collation with the earliest MS. of the lists, Vespasian B. 6 (V).This, though often differing in spelling, agrees with 183 in some of itsmost curious errors.

Immediately upon the last of the genealogies follows a paragraph, partly perhaps taken from \ht Historia Britonum* (see Mommsen in MGH.pp. 132, 172), partly from Pliny (N. H. iv 16. 102) or Solinus (22. 10).

1 The attribution of any part of this paragraph to the Historia Britonum is contested by MrH. Munro Chadwick, who says in a note to me: "I doubt the borrowing of the note QuandoGratianus etc. from the H. Br., partly on account of the form Wyrtgeorno, and still more becauseof quarta, which apparently does not occur in any text of the ff. Br. As H. Br. in §§ 57—65 hasclearly used a text related to 183 (containing (i) genealogies (2) lists of kings) there is some reasonfor thinking that the borrowing may have been the other way. Again, the gist of the whole passageBritannia—sexcenti is in Bede H. E. I i, whereas the latter part (circuitus) does not occur in H. Br.,or (so far as I know) in any Celtic writer."

This group of paragraphs, from De trina incarnatione, occurs again inno. 320, ff. 95-100. Some of the matter is also found in Julius A. 2 inAnglo-Saxon, printed by Napier, Anglia, XI, I.

Christianas Historicus I believe to be Cosmas Indicopleustes. Thedimensions of the earth according to him agree with those given above. He conceives of it as oblong in form, and compares it with the tabernacleand the ark. I connect the citation of him here with a letter of Koaenaarchbishop of York to Lulius of Mainz, in which certain " libri cosmo-grafiorum" are mentioned. (Jaffe, Monumenta Moguntina, p. 291.) SeeMr E. O. Winstedt's Cosmas Indicopleustes, Cambridge, 1909, p. ix.

Next follows a list of the difficult words that occur in the metricalLife of St Cuthbert, with their interpretations. About one-third are inAnglo Saxon.

This list coincides to a slight extent only with the list of presentsmade to St Cuthbert's church by Aethelstan in 931 : see below.

Plummer (Bede, I cxlvii, note) refers to Symeon of Durham (I 211) assaying that in 931 ^Ethelstan gave a copy of Bede's lives of Cuthbert tothe see, which was then at Chester-le-Street, and adds : " This copy is nowin the Library of C. C. C. Cambridge, no. 183." The words in the charterquoted by Symeon are " unam sancti Cuthberti uitam metrice et prosaicescriptam." If this interesting identification is correct (as I believe it to be),we must suppose that the picture at the beginning of the book represents^Ethelstan offering the volume to St Cuthbert.
