In the late 19 th Century, Mother Gonzaga Barry IBVM, the founding sister of Loreto Schools in Australia, offered the following sage advice to her students: “Go through the different studies diligently and cheerfully and under the eye of your Heavenly Father, with a pure and upright intention making every act a prayer ..... The motive of giving satisfaction to your parents is one that ought to be very powerful with you, if you will only reflect on the many sacrifices they have made for your advancement. In one respect it is a matter of strict justice that you should do your very best and avail yourselves of every opportunity to improve”. This advice seems both timeless and timely. Let us pray that each and every Loreto student lives out the call to be both ‘diligent and cheerful’ in doing her very best. Amen. AN IMPORTANT TWO WEEKS AHEAD: Term Two Work Commences Even though exams will be over this Friday, it is important for all parents and students to be aware that all classes will commence Term Two work from next Monday, April 4 th . Due to the shortness of Term Two it is critical that during the upcoming fortnight, students remain focussed and diligent. Understandably, they will be ‘ready for a holiday’ but we ask for your support in encouraging their sustained efforts and application until April 15 th , when they will at last be able to rest and revive. WHOLE SCHOOL SURVEY Yesterday, all staff, parents and students should have received an email inviting participation in an online survey. This survey will be open for ten working days with reminders being sent periodically. In anticipation, I thank you for your support in taking part. The higher the level of participation, the more meaningful is the data, so again, thank you. CONGRATULATIONS To Emily Rendon (Year 8) who recently won an award from the Queensland Quilters’ Guild Craft Expo. Her delightful hanging quilt will travel around Australia. I’m sure you’ll agree, Emily has great talent indeed. To Bridget Sankey (Year 11) and Kelley O’Leary (Year 12) on their selection to the Metropolitan East Team for Soccer.

Street Parking We have received a number of complaints from neighbours in relation to cars parking around the school particularly at drop off and pick up time. While afternoons in particular are very busy, parents are asked to observe the traffic rules in the area to ensure the safety of students and residents. You will be aware that Queensland Police regularly patrol the area and fines are issued for any infringements. Your

observance of the rules will be appreciated. Noel Williams ‐ Business Manager

St Vincent de Paul News Thanks to all of you in the Loreto Community who assisted us with the Easter egg collection. We have enough now. A special thanks to Ciane Guilfoyle who organised the wrapping (green cellophane with silver ribbon mainly) in lunch times by a dedicated team of members. Well over 200 eggs have been wrapped. These members will deliver the eggs on Wednesday 20th April. Any extras will go to the local nursing home and also to needy families through the Inala Family Support Centre. Also thanks to those students who volunteered to help sell raffle tickets. That has given us much needed funds for other projects this year. Thanks, everyone. We pray that Easter is a much needed break when we will have time to reflect on the spiritual in our busy lives.

performing students are asked to supply a plate of food for supper. Could all instrumentalists (Guitar / Band / Strings) please supply supper for the Friday 8 April Concert and all singers (Junior Choir, Senior Choir) please supply supper for the Wednesday 13 April Concert. Plates should be delivered to the MWC canteen on arrival at 5:30 PM. Thank you.

Music Tour – The extra Tour Rehearsal for members of

Jazz Ensemble and Sorelle will run on Sunday morning 10 April from 9am to 1.00pm. Jazz Ensemble will start (from 9 am to 11.00am) and Sorelle will follow (from 11am to 1.00pm). I am aware that these times do not suit one or two students, however, they were the best fit for the ensembles that we could find. If there is any way that other commitments can be varied so that we have full attendance that would be fantastic but I will understand if this is not possible. Any student who will definitely be absent must confirm this with me in advance so that the rehearsals can be planned to be most effective.

Private Music Tuition – Private tuition fees at Loreto College are kept “in accordance with and subject to changes of the recommendation of the Music Teachers Association of Queensland” (excerpt from “Private Music Tuition – 2011 Application Form”. At the start of 2011, the recommended rate for private tuition was increased from $30 / 30 min lesson to $31 / 30 min lesson. Tuition Fees at Loreto will therefore increase after the Easter Holidays to match this recommendation.

Powerhouse Concert – Katie Noonan & Karin Schaupp ‐ On Friday, 29 and Saturday 30 April Ms Schaupp

will be performing at the Powerhouse with well‐known vocalist Katie Noonan, with whom she has recorded a CD of songs of the British Isles. It is a reflection of our Guitar Ensemble One’s outstanding performances at the West Australian festival last year that Ms Schaupp has invited the group to perform at these two concerts. This is a wonderful and generous opportunity to share the stage with one of the world’s foremost guitarists. We congratulate all of Guitar Ensemble One on being invited to this prestigious event. Tickets can be purchased through Brisbane Powerhouse on (07) 3358 8600 or visit www.brisbanepowerhouse.org.

Year 10 Alcohol Education Day - Friday 1 April This Friday will be an ‘Alcohol Awareness and Education Day’ for Yr 10 students. This is a new initiative for the Health Education department that aims to increase students’ alcohol related knowledge and to develop skills to resist the social influences that currently encourage alcohol consumption in young people. The Yr 12 Health Education students will ‘teach’ 4 of the 6 lessons for the day, to utilise the effectiveness of peer education as a valuable strategy in alcohol education. The Yr 12s have planned a variety of interactive learning experiences. Each lesson will explore the issues associated with teen drinking culture through the social inquiry process and will include group discussions followed by feedback. Current social marketing campaigns and programs are used in the lessons. A survey will be given at the end of the lesson to determine the level of success of the various activities and to indicate levels of knowledge compared with a pre‐test survey. Under‐age drinking and binge drinking have a significant impact on the health, safety and well‐being of our young people. We hope that this Awareness Day will make a positive difference and thank the Health Education students and staff for this initiative.

This week saw our most competitive matches of the season with two of our teams playing in quarter final matches and other teams playing top performing teams. Well done, Girls, on a week of highly skilled and entertaining Volleyball.

Open A ‐ Lost 2 sets to 1, All Hallows This game was definitely the most exciting and challenging game of the season so far for the Open A team. The first set was very close and the girls served strongly to win this set. The second set proved challenging also with the All Hallows’ team fighting hard for every point and eventually tying up the game 1 ‐ 1. The third set was nerve racking for the girls but they showed real fight and determination turning the game around from 16 ‐ 20 to 24 ‐ 24. After some amazing rallys the girls unfortunately lost the game but showed great

for the future. The interviews will have a slightly different focus depending on the student’s Year Level, eg Year 8’s will reflect on the process of settling into secondary school and Year 11’s on their adjustment to senior schooling. The Year 10 interviews will form part of the development of each student’s Senior Education Training Plan. Interviews will be conducted between 1.30pm and 6.30pm and will be for approximately 15 minutes. Classes will conclude at 12.30pm. Students may go home or be supervised at school during the remainder of the afternoon. This interview is in addition to the Parent/Student/Subject Teacher interviews held in July when parents have the opportunity to talk with each of their daughter’s teachers about her progress in particular subjects. We hope this interview opportunity will enhance communication between families and the College and our ability to provide the very best for your daughters academically and pastorally. On Tuesday or Wednesday next week, each family should receive in the post a letter with details of the interviews and a sheet for nominating your preferred interview time. On Monday 11 April, students in Years 8 and 11, as well as new students in other year levels, will receive Interim

sportsmanship in defeat. We look forward to hopefully playing them again.

Open B ‐ Lost 3 sets to 1, MSM Unlucky again this week to not get a win! We lost the first set by only a margin of 2 points. In the second set we staged a decent comeback but unfortunately couldn't get on top of Mt St Michael's. In the third set we went down by quite a close margin as well, but the girls played really well again. Fingers are crossed for our remaining round match of the sea‐son. Onto next week! Junior A ‐ Won 2 sets to 1, All Hallows’ Junior A's had their greatest and most competitive game yet this week against All Hallow's, winning 2‐1; the game was an accumulation of all their hard work and training throughout the season so far. Everyone displayed superb skill and game play, with Carla Caputo absolutely lethal through attack and great defence by Georgia Hillas and Emily McMahon. Next week, the girls will be aiming to keep this court momentum and teamwork up. Great game girls!

Junior B ‐ Lost 2 sets to 1, Our Lady’s College The Junior B Volleyball team played against the strong Our Lady’s outfit, losing narrowly 2 ‐ 1 in a hard fought and competitive game. Winning the first set, and only just losing the second and third was a considerable improvement from the last time they played. Mia Page played exceptionally well this week in scrabbling defence, as did Sarah Toohey with her consistent serving.

Junior D ‐ Won 3 sets to 0, All Hallows Our 3 hit rally gameplan resulted in a 3‐0 scoreline! Well done to each of the girls on their self discipline in foregoing the temptation to quickly hit the ball back over the net. Georgia Christie served beautifully throughout the game, but particularly in the first set with 9 serves straight without a mistake, putting a lot of pressure on the opposition. Siobhan Setch's confidence is growing with every game and she is to be congratulated on her lovely passing in the match. Our attack is built on such passes. The fight back of the game came in the 3rd set when we came back from 6‐15 down, to win it 25‐17! We're hoping to maintain our intensity for our next match against Mt Alvernia!

Junior E2 ‐ Won 2 sets to 1, MSM Another dominating performance from our E2 team saw them blow MSM off the court in the first two sets! An impressive display of serving and even a couple of three hit attacking plays proved far too strong for the MSM team. The third set saw an improved MSM who served well and fought for the set, eventually winning the set 17‐15, a very close and competitive set. Well done, Girls. One more game before

the Grand Final! Kirsty Gore ‐ Volleyball Coordinator

DANCES

Years 10, 11 and 12 girls are offered invitations to dances at other schools. Loreto usually passes on invitations and

distributes tickets from Villanova, St Laurence’s, Gregory Terrace, Marist Ashgrove and Iona. The College feels that Year 8

and 9 students are too young to attend large dances at boys’ schools. Dances conducted by Loreto, with Loreto staff and

parents supervising, are a safer and more supportive environment for young students, as are dances conducted by boys’

schools specifically for younger year levels. Dances that younger students are able to attend are listed below. It is the

parents’ responsibility to check the arrangements to decide whether they wish their daughter to go.

Years 9 to 12 students are permitted to attend the Loreto Interact Dance.

Year 10 may also attend the Marist Ashgrove dancing classes and final dance.

At times tickets may also be distributed for socials or dances organized by other schools for specific year levels.

Parents and Friends organise an annual Loreto Dance for Years 8 to12. This is strictly supervised by parents, security

guards and some members of the Administration Team. This dance cannot occur without significant numbers of

parent supervisors.

Can parents please consider the following points:

Invitations from boys' schools asking Loreto students to their whole school dances are offered to Years 10, 11 and 12

girls only, in accordance with the above Policy.

Each of these schools states in their accompanying letter that students will not be allowed entry to the dance

without school ID. This rule is followed quite strictly. Entrance payment is normally collected as students enter the

dance.

In some cases, no dance tickets are issued and students simply present at the venue with school ID. At other times,

boys’ schools send tickets to be issued to interested students and state that no‐one will be admitted without a ticket.

Sometimes, they adhere strictly to this rule; at other times, they are reluctant to refuse entry and students with the

appropriate ID are able to buy tickets at the door. But parents need to be aware that students who try to gain entry

to a dance without a ticket, a practice which Loreto recommends against, may not be able to purchase one. Unless

parents have waited to check that their daughter can enter the dance, she may be left outside, unsupervised.

Even if students have in fact purchased a ticket, parents are advised to wait to ensure their daughter does actually

enter the dance. Occasionally, students arrange to be dropped at a dance but then go elsewhere for the evening,

returning at the time parents have arranged to collect them.

Schools set clear guidelines for dress and behaviour at dances – for visiting girls as well as their own boys! Obviously,

any girl carrying alcohol or under the influence of alcohol or any other drug will not be admitted to any dance. A

typical dress code is – girls should not wear hats or caps, bikini tops, midriff tops, backless tops, excessively short

skirts or shorts. Girls not complying with the code will be refused admission, with or without a ticket. Please monitor

what your daughters are wearing or bring to dances. Be aware that girls may leave home in one outfit but change

into less acceptable clothing at a friend's place or at the dance.

While Loreto distributes tickets to Years 10, 11 and 12 students to dances at boys' schools, Loreto staff are not involved in

supervision at these dances.

The College’s concern is always for the safety and well‐being of our students. Parents do of course take ultimate responsibility for the attendance, behaviour and dress of their daughters at school dances or any other social event. We hope that this information is helpful.
