unprecedented global pandemic crisis. Questions to be addressed are: How do you care for the mentally ill when their support system is no longer available? How are diverse religious and other social groups affected? How can psychological and spiritual resources be disseminated to the public in a crisis? What civic and social systems are available to fill the gap? Is it wise to direct clients to Internet sites and online meetings to supplement the care they receive, and what should therapists tell their clients? How can the mental health community pre-pare ahead for a future crisis of this magnitude?

LEARNING OBJECTIVESAt the conclusion of this event, participants will be able to:® Identify existential and spiritual struggles and describe three ways to foster greater wholeness in the midst of upheaval ® Identify self-care techniques for those experiencing complicated grief

® From Brokenness to Wholeness: Repairing the Human Spirit in an Era of Upheaval

Few people have gone untouched by the upheaval surrounding COVID-19. This modern-day plague has shaken and, in some cases, shattered the health and well-being of all too many. But the effects of the virus are not simply physical, emotional, social, and economic: They are spiritual as well. This talk will focus on the impact of COVID-19 at our deepest levels: our dreams for the future, our most fundamental assumptions and beliefs about ourselves and the world, our network of social connections, and our usual ways of coping with crisis. In this talk we will consider how to repair woundedness of the human spirit. We will discuss ways to help people hold on to and, perhaps transform, their deepest sources of value and meaning. We will consider how to facilitate a sense of sacredness when uncertainty, injustice, and suffering are rampant. And we will consider how healers, with wounded spirits of their own, can keep themselves afloat as they struggle to help others floundering in the turbulent seas of the times.

Kenneth I. Pargament, PhD, is a leading expert in the psychology of spirituality and health. He is a professor emeritus of psychology at Bowling Green State University and former distinguished scholar at the Institute for Spirituality and Health. He was recently cited as “One of 50 Most Influential Living Psychologists in the World.”

® John K. Graham, MD, DMin

® The Psycho-Spiritual Trauma of Complicated Grief

Grief is the human response to loss upon the death of a loved one, loss of relationships, employment, and financial security. The recent coronavirus pandemic caused losses in all the areas mentioned creating psychological, emotional and spiritual issues that individuals have to deal with shuttered in their homes, often alone, distanced socially from family, friends and co-workers. Reports of employees being laid off and businesses filing for bankruptcy create the fear that one’s own employment may be in jeopardy. At the same time, psychotherapy offices have closed and access to mental health care has been curtailed. A source of strength for many during a time of crisis – churches, synagogues, mosques and temples – are closed. These problems add yet another burden for those who suffer from mental illness. Anxiety and depression escalated, including suicidal ideation. What is the role of spirituality and faith in healthcare during a global pandemic? John Graham, MD, DMin, is both a physician and an Episcopal Priest. This presentation will be informed by the experience of having facilitated a grief-recovery group for over eight years at the Institute for Spirituality and Health and will address various tools for the clinical management of grief, including the efficacy of virtual grief support groups.
