had the idea of doing something useful with

the scads of paper printed on one side only

every day, but it was not until 2010 that he

actually implemented it: with the designers from

Onomato and university printer Klampfer the

paper is bound into blocks called Re-Block.

The project was promptly awarded the

    Re-Design Network Award. A long-term

marketing concept is now in development.

Crale to crale is Michael Braugarts philosophy:waste is to be plae as a resource from the very start. There ca be a little more waste or emissios, if they areuseful to the eviromet.

Makes sense, but its not new. Is this justsustainability and environmental protectionunder a new name? No, because ts not about conservaton, but n-

the abandonment o them s entrely unneces-

Often parents are less than thrilled

about toys that are made in China

due to the possibility of harmful substanc-es. With its bamboo toys, the Swiss company

    Xibambam proves that ecologically important

material for toys also comes from China. The

    materials advantages: cultivation is easy,

pesticides are not required, and it grows within

a few weeks right next to the production site.

Only the transportation route to Europe lowers

    the ecobalance. Otherwise, the sustainable

ALTERnATIVE dRIVEOf course its nice that the European Commission now stipulates

standard plugs for mobile phone chargers. This way the chances of

charging the battery even if you dont have your own charger with you

are greater. Somewhere theres always one lying around. But an adios

to entangled cables certainly applies to alternative systems that supply

green energy for iPhones and Co, like the Solar Surge solar charger

or wind-powered iFan. Both handsets are all-in-one, so no other

device is needed. While the solar solution has already been licensed

by Apple and is to be launched at the end of the year, designer Tjeerd

Veenhoven is still seeking production partners for his small wind power

system. A nice secondary effect of the invention: the iFan-equipped

Taking Every Resource intoAccountResource management not only means correctly separating and recycling waste. Rather, it is amatter of incorporating all of the factors relevant to environmental and energy technology intoan overall concept. In 2020 the province of Styria intends to be the trailblazer in sustainableresource management.

Paper here, plastic there. Aluminium here, glass

    there. Biowaste here, non-recyclable waste

there. Thats right, Styrians know what has to

be separated. Over 70 percent o household

waste lands in the proper recycling bin. In the

municipal collection centres or recyclables 77

types o waste are collected and the overall re-

cycling rate is 79 percent. On the other hand,

the share o non-recyclable waste has beenlowered by 29.8 percent. The fgures show

that scarcely anyone here doubts that rubbish

contains valuable resources. So ar, so good.

That separating rubbish alone is ar rom any-

    thing constituting resource management be-

comes clear when taking a look at the term

resource as defned in the Austrian Waste

Management Act or the latest announcement

by the European Commission, A Resource-E-

fcient Europe Flagship Initiative o the Europe

    2020 Strategy. Sustainable resource man-

agement is about the preservation o natural ea-

tures such as soil, water, air, climate, resources,

biomass and energy. Furthermore, social and

economic aspects are taken into consideration

and the conservation o resources emphasised

in order to ensure the oundation o lie or uture

    generations, explains Wilhelm Himmel, sus-

tainability coordinator or the province o Styria

and director o Department 19D Waste and

Material Flow Management. In Styria regional-

ism is also a central issue, he says, and Ingrid

Winter, ofcer or the provincial waste manage-

ment plan (L-AWP) in Department 19D, explains

that awareness-raising is the catchword. De-

velopment into a recycling society shaped by

the conservation o resources is to be ultimately

enabled. Thus the L-AWP 2010 is to be seen

as a concept or the implementation o sustain-

    able resource management.

    Styrian Projects

The province o Styrias vision is to adopt a pio-

neering role in sustainable resource manage-

ment by 2020. In the scope o this, projects

    are being initiated such as

    Smart Parties, in which

    the volume o waste at

    large events is reduced

    by 90 percent by using

    recyclable dishes and

    regional value

    creation boost-

ed multiple times using regional ood. The

spread o Re-Use Shops throughout Styria is

also underway. These involve entrusting the col-

lection and repair o old urniture or textiles with

social-economic enterprises in order to return

the products obtained to the consumption cycle.

This preparation or reuse is one o the new

areas anchored in the L-AWP 2010. Thus the

vision o the pioneering role is an entirely realis-tic undertaking. Ater all, many Styrians are al-

ready participating in the programmes and are

looking beyond the edge o the rubbish bin.

    Modern resource management

    includes all factors, from soil,

    air, water and climate, to

    innovation, technologies and

    man himself.

    ValuableWastewater

That water is a valuable resource or lie is in-

disputable. What is less known is that waste-

water is a valuable resource or recycling

valuable substances such as metals, acids and

salts. Copper, or example, can be recovered

rom the wastewater rom printed circuit board

production, nickel rom galvanic rinse water

and tantaric acid rom the passivation o alu-

minium. In view o the steadily rising commod-

ity prices the price o copper rose by 40

percent in the second hal o 2010 recycling

    rom wastewater is becoming economically

    more interesting.

Recovery of valuable substances throughfreeze concentration

Joanneum Research has developed an innova-

tive process or this: the selective recovery o

resources rom component currents o process

and wastewater by means o reeze concen-

tration. The process is based on the various

properties o the crystallisation o water content

at various temperatures, Arnold Stuhlbacher o

the research group Industrial Water Manage-

    ment and Wastewater Technologies explains.

Previously, the process was used primarily in the

pharmaceutical industry in production. The new

technology is based on the principle that a salt

solution in the water has a eutectic reezing

point and due to the various densities and par-

ticle sizes the salt and ice crystals ormed can

    be recovered again separately.

The process o reeze concentration requires

considerably less energy than other thermal

processes. For example, reezing one kilo o

water requires just 1/7 the energy required by

vaporisation. In addition, due to the low temper-atures the chemical structure does not change

and no volatile substances are lost. There are

possible applications in the treatment o corro-

sive media, as with lye in the metal-processing

    industry, says Joanneum researcher Stuhlbach-

er, or in the recovery o water-soluble materi-

als and organic substances. Compared to

other separating technologies such as vacuum

    vaporisation, ultra- and nanofltration,

    osmosis, electrodialysis and membrane

    tion, reeze concentration has advantag

    as cost-savings or certain applications.

Interdisciplinary cooperationIndustrial Water Management and W

ter Technologies is one o six research

    at RESOURCES Institute or Water,

    and Sustainability. Other research gro

the Laboratory Centre or Isotope Hy

    and Environmental Analytics, Water R

    Management, Geophysics and Geo

    Energy Research and Chemical and

cal Plant Utilisation. According to insrector Otto Nowak, the interdisciplinar

eration o these six highly specialised r

groups is taken advantage o in order t

    to R&D challenges quickly, competen

    innovatively and to oer companies

standard o technology and product d

ments as well as consulting services.
