FROM OUR PASTOR / DE NUESTRO PÁRROCO

Dear friends,

Have you ever noticed how people refer to God or to Jesus when they speak about Him in conversation? Perhaps you and your friends don’t talk that way? I mean it is true that some people simply don’t talk about their religion or share anything about their life of faith. Other people, of course, speak often about their prayer, their quest to find and follow God’s will, etc. So, how do you prefer to refer to God?

In pastoral work, we kind of have to speak about God on a regular basis. In pastoral counseling and in working with peo-ple who have questions or seek spiritual guidance, it is an in-teresting thing to notice how they speak. Some people speak of God in a sort of distant way, almost in a general “out there somewhere” kind of way. Other people say “Our Savior” or “Our Lord.” I am thinking of this now because there is a kind of competition or maybe an informal poll I take in my mind between two favored names for Jesus which are used by people engaged in serious work on their friendship with Him: I reg-ularly hear Him called “The Friend” and “The King.” Both, of course, are good and acceptable. And people who use one or the other could tell you why they do. So, which do you prefer?

This Sunday, of course, we celebrate Jesus as King! I know that with a little attention in prayer each of us can come to a good understanding of the meaning of His Kingship and of our privileged place as His (hopefully loyal) subjects. Focus on that in your prayer.

I admit that I hesitated some before agreeing to do the Capi-tal Campaign pledging process on this particular Sunday. But with further reflection, I think it makes perfect sense to ask you to make a concrete expression of your commitment to the well-being of the parish, the local home of Jesus Our King, on the day dedicated to Him as our Ruler and Lord. I would hope that we can all recognize the benevolence and compassion of our Humble King, Jesus. I also would love it if every parishio-ner had a sense of belonging to this parish home.

I have seen some amazing generosity lately. May the gratitude we have to God for His Friendship with us and His Kingship over us be evident in our actions and in our lives!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope to see you at the community Thanksgiving Mass on Thursday at 10 AM.

With my prayers,

Fr. Matthew ZuberbuelerPastor

Queridos amigos,

Entonces, ¿cómo prefieres referirte a Dios?

Ultimamente, he visto una gran generosidad.

Since restarting the Campaign, we have received a number or generous pledges. The participa-tion of every household in the parish is critical for us to meet our goal of $4 Million. The parish family is healthy when each of us does our part, rather than expecting someone else to take care of everything.

Many of these projects and improvements will depend completely on your sacrificial giving. Pledge weekend will take place THIS Saturday, November 20th and Sunday, November 21st. Please prayerfully consider the ways in which you would like to contribute to these improve-ments. Thank you!

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CATHOLIC CHURCH | CAPITAL CAMPAIGNHONORING OUR PAST, ENSURING OUR FUTURE

"Our Parish, first established as a Mission of St. Mary’s in Old Town Alexandria in 1921, has grown into a symbol of faith and service in the Falls Church community. For generations of Catholic families, St. Anthony has served as a spiritual home, a place of special memo-ries—Baptisms, First Holy Communions, Confirmations, Weddings and Funerals. Now we are called to rise to the challenge of honoring our past and ensuring that future generations will be able to carry forward the mission of Christ in this special parish family of faith.”

Catechesis Corner:

A:

We celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King on the last Sunday of the liturgical year. In 1925, Pope Pius XI instituted this feast with his encyclical Quas Primas ("In the First") to respond to growing nationalism and secularism. He recognized that these re-lated societal ills would breed increasing hostility against the Church. His encyclical reminds the faithful that while governments and philosophies come and go, Christ reigns as King forever. (usccb.org)

Check back next week for the answer to our next question:Q: What are your preparation plans for Advent this year?

Q: What Solemnity do Catholics celebrate on the last Sunday of the liturgical year?

HIGHLIGHTS

Knights of Columbus Keep Christ in Christmas

The Knights of Columbus offer multiple activities that promote Christmas and the season of Advent in their proper context: Journey to the Inn, Spread the Light of Christ, Crèche or Advent Wreath Blessing, and the Christmas Poster Contest. These programs are centered on the example of the Holy Family and the Nativity of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The new Keep Christ in Christmas (KCIC) Program brings all KCIC activities together under one um-brella. It encourages councils to prompt their neigh-bors to shift from a preoccupation with materialism to the light of Christ and the spirit of giving. KCIC activities include whatever efforts best suit the par-ish and community of a particular council and do not need to originate from the Supreme Council.
