Engagement is more than off-the shelf tools (albeit many arevery good…or they wouldn’t still be around). Engagement atthe truest and most profitable level is connecting with eachindividual student where they are, and most importantly atan individual and personal level. Engagement is breakingdown the teacher and student barriers and being a realperson. Engagement is talking to, not at a student.Engagement is laughing with a student, not at a student.Engagement is whatever it takes to help that student seetheir potential.

Art of Teaching for Generation Y and Z – Students Come 1st Palisades AAudience: Faculty

Are we ready for Generation-Z? Are we ready for newcoming technologies? At the present time most of ourstudents are from Generation-Y (Millennials) and we are stilltrying to figure them out, let alone here comes Generation-Z. I believe teaching is an art and the more we master it thebetter we can help our students to learn. We have to adaptto the new generations’ way of learning and to the newtechnologies as well. The new generation mostly areunengaged and moving away from group activities due tothe gadgets and technologies, so we have to help them tohave a sense of being part of the group. We have toestablish connection to our students. We have to movethem, mix them, and engage them. We may have to createtime to listen to their problems. We may have to change ourway of teaching.

Properly run Dual Enrollment Programs can be verybeneficial, not only to the student involved, but also forcollege enrollment going forward. The key is to develop aninterest with the student as well as show the necessity ofthese learned skills in the work world.

The key is to make the courses as close to, if not exactly, likethe courses at the normal college level so the student canmake a virtually seamless transition into the post-secondaryprogram. This takes close ties and constant communicationwith the high school partner. We will discuss some ways toaccomplish this idea.

How to Improve Critical Thinking ofStudents in the Modern EducationSystemPalisades BAudience: General

Presenter: Igor Kuriahskin, Adjunct Professor of Physics,

Tri-County Technical College

It is no secret that in the modern education system, frompreschool to graduate school, students are repeatedly givenmultiple choice quizzes, and are asked to memorize givenmaterial rather than come to their own conclusions based onthe facts gathered from observations and publishedscientific data. In my teaching experience, conceptuallearning rather than memorization of facts, is moreproductive in the long run. This presentation will cover basicpoints of this approach and, as a result, stimulation of critical

thinking.

Teams and Small Groups as TeachingMethodsPalisades FAudience: General

Presenter: Lawrence S. Fetterly, Math Instructor,Tri-County Technical College

By the 1990’s, many American industries were experiencingincreasing competition from Japanese and Germanindustries. Products, notably automobiles and othermanufactured goods, were more innovated, cost less andperformed better. A major contributor to that success byindustries foreign to American was our own W. EdwardDeming. His methods on continuous improvement and his14-point system to achieve it was published and known byAmerican industries. Unfortunately, Japanese leadersstudied his methods with Deming as a consultant while heremained mostly unknown or ignored here in America.

Out of his applied theories came management forcontinuous improvement by team management. This wasthe origin of the method known as the “Quality Circle.” Thefield education has since caught on to the concept. The useof teams has been applied for decades to conducting labsand such but has been underapplied in our class rooms. After a long career in engineering, he achieved teachingcertificates and an M.Ed. and have for many years utilizedstudent teams and small groups to enhance the learningprocess.

Through this proposed presentation, he will share hisexperience and methods he learned from the ClemsonUniversity Education Department.

A. Wade Martin“Innovator of the Year” Award

A lot has changed since 1961. Back then, while other statesthroughout the nation were experiencing job growth indeveloping industries, South Carolina’s economy wasdominated by agriculture and textile manufacturing.Modern businesses required employees with advanced skillsand education, requirements this state could not meet.Change was needed and leaders with a vision for thatchange responded to the challenge. Along with names likeHollings, West and McNair, another name should beremembered – A. Wade Martin.

Wade Martin was the first Executive Director of what is nowknown as the South Carolina Technical College System.Starting from scratch, he and other technical collegepioneers created a system that is recognized as a leader inworkforce development. Thanks to his trailblazing spirit,South Carolinians now benefit from 16 technical colleges, readySC and other programs designed to assist them ingetting the skills they need and employers demand.

Because of Wade Martin’s tremendous contributions to theSouth Carolina Technical College System, it is fitting that theaward for innovation be named in his honor.

Created in 1981, the A. Wade Martin Award recognizes

individuals and teams in the Technical College System who

use innovative approaches to meet the changing demands

of technical education and whose achievements most
