REBOUND U.
The Morehead State men have either led the Ohio Valley Conference or ranked second in rebounding margin now in 11 consecutive seasons, and that trend is nearly holding true again this season. They are currently fourth in the conference at +3.2.
Freshman guard De’Von Cooper has been outstanding when he gets to the free throw line. Cooper shoots 83 percent but does not have enough attempts to qualify for the league rankings. He has hit 24 of his 29 free throws. He was also en fuego from the three-point line Saturday at EKU, hitting all three from outside the arc.
CLOSE CALLS
Despite its 12 conference setbacks, Morehead State has dropped 10 of them by 10 points or less. Overall this season, the Eagles are 3-7 in games decided by fi ve points or less.
100 DIMES
Junior guard A.J. Hicks has dished out 101 assists this season, averaging 4.0 per game. Hicks boasts 10 games where he has dished out at least fi ve helpers.
SHARP SHOOTER
Sophomore guard Djimon Henson is the Eagles’ most accurate three-point shooter, hitting 38 percent of shots behind the arc. That would rank him in the top 15 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
WE’VE BEEN PRETTY GOOD LATELY
Since 2008-09, Morehead State has had fi ve 20-win campaigns and made fi ve postseason appearances (2 NCAA, 3 CBI). The Eagles advanced to the championship series of the CBI in 2015-16, taking Nevada to the fi nal game of the three-game set before falling.
WAITING IN THE WINGS
Morehead State has added an early signee for the 2018-19 season in high school point guard Tada (TAY-da) Stricklen. Stricklen, who is a senior this season at Corinth (Miss.) High School, led his team to a 4A state championship as a sophomore. As a junior, Stricklen averaged 20.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game.
INSIDE MOREHEAD STATE BASKETBALL
Inside Morehead State Basketball, a 30-minute TV program airs each Sunday. The show, hosted and produced by David Patrick, will air at 1 p.m. ET on DIRECTV channel 14, DISH Network channel 28 and Spectrum Cable channel 99. The show features commentary and a look back at previous games with head coach Preston Spradlin, along with fun features highlighting Morehead State’s student-athletes and coach-ing staff .

PRESTON SPRADLIN -- MOREHEAD STATE HEAD COACH18-28, .391 at Morehead State (fi rst season as full-time head coach, second season as head coach, fourth with program)
Preston Spradlin is his fi rst season as full-time head coach after spending the majority of the 2016-17 season as interim head coach. He is in his fourth season overall with the Morehead State men’s basketball program and his ninth year working with a Division I program.
Spradlin offi cially took on the interim head coaching position on Dec. 15, 2016, nine games into the 2016-17 season after the Eagles opened with a 2-7 record. He then guided Morehead State to a 12-9 record the rest of the way and a 10-6 mark in OVC play, which ranked second in the league.
During his three years as assistant coach, his time was spent in a variety of areas, including recruit-ing, scouting, practice/game preparation and academics monitoring.
Following the 2015-16 season, Spradlin was named to the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) 2016 Under Armour 30-Under-30-Team, which recognizes 30 men’s basketball coaches across the country that are under the age of 30.
Spradlin came to Morehead State after fi ve seasons with national power Kentucky. He spent two campaigns (2009-11) as a graduate assistant with the Wildcats before three years as the assistant director of operations (2011-14). His du-ties included fi lm breakdown, creating and maintaining playbooks, assisting with opponent scouting and day-to-day operations.
Spradlin earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Alice Lloyd (Ky.) in 2009 and master’s degree in kinesiology and health promotion, with a sports leadership emphasis, from Kentucky in 2011. He was a four-year men’s basketball let-terwinner for the NAIA Eagles from 2005-09.
Spradlin, a 2005 graduate of Betsy Layne High School (Ky.), is married to the former Misty Tackett. The couple has one son, Bentley, and one infant daughter, Aubrey.
