Marta Montañez was born in 1936 in the city of Humacao, Puerto Rico. At the age of five she began to play the violin and when she was nine, encouraged by her uncle, the music critic Rafael Montañez, she took up the cello. When she was ten she moved to San Juan de Puerto rico, where she began her music studies with Professor rafael Figueroa and shortly afterwards she continued with the cello at the mannes College of music in new york, under the direction of Professor lieff rosanoff.

In 1952, accompanied by her uncle and Rosanoff, she made her first journey to Prades to meet the maestro Pau Casals. impressed by the young cellist’s ability he recommended her to come back to be his pupil once she had completed her higher cello studies in new york.

In 1955 she returned to Prades to begin taking classes with Casals. Very soon she became his trusted assistant, learned French and Catalan and began to help him with his correspondence. The same year she accompanied him on his first journey to Puerto Rico, her mother’s homeland, and for the next two years they were never apart. In August 1957 they were married.

through the sixteen years of their marriage she accompanied Casals at all his concerts and events and became a great support in his life. she helped him with the planning and preparation of the Prades and Puerto rico Festivals, with the master classes in Zermatt and marlboro and, from 1960, she went with him to the 30 performances of el Pessebre which he directed all round the world. in Puerto rico she worked on setting up the symphony orchestra, the Conservatory of music and the Casals Festival, of which she became director when he died.

During all that time at their home in isla Verde the couple welcomed many Catalans who wanted to share with them their hope that one day their country would recover all its freedoms.

in 1972 they created the Pau Casals Foundation with the aim of preserving his legacy in Catalonia. in 1979, at the express wish of the maestro, marta montañez and the president of the Catalan Government, Josep Tarradellas, brought his remains back to Catalonia. Today they rest in the graveyard of his home town, el Vendrell.

since then she has always maintained close ties with Catalonia. el Vendrell and the Pau Casals Foundation and has striven to keep his legacy and spirit alive at home and abroad.

In 1975, she married the pianist Eugène Istomin, who had also been a pupil of Casals. In 1980 she was appointed artistic director of the kennedy Center in washington D.C. From 1990 to 1997 she was made a member of the us national Council on the arts and director of the recontres musicales in evian (France). From 1992 she was president of the manhattan school of music in new york.
