2016 SEASON PREVIEW

Heading into the 2015–16 season, the Tiger baseball team hopes to fi nish what they started a year ago. Last spring, the Tigers jumped out to one of the best starts in program history, winning 20 of their fi rst 24 games. A mid-season slide, however, kept them out of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) playoff race.

“We just didn’t play our best baseball when we needed to most,” said Head Coach Todd Reid. “We had our chances the last two weeks of the season and didn’t capitalize. Our goals this year include being as prepared as we were last year to open the season. But we also want to build our chemistry and mental approach through the grind of the season, and play our best baseball in April and May 2016.”

After receiving attention from multiple clubs throughout the year, the program watched the annual MLB draft closely as junior shortstop Josh Altmann had his named called in the 22nd round by the Texas Rangers. He became the 23rd player in program history to

get an opportunity to play professionally. After much thought and prayer, Altmann decided to

forgo his senior year at Olivet and reported to Rookie League in Surprise, Arizona.

“Josh had such a great year, it was hard for

scouts to ignore him. We were so excited to see him get the call to play at the next level,” said Reid.

While this is a great accomplishment for Altmann and ONU baseball — with two players drafted in three years — it was also an unexpected loss for Reid and the Tigers.

“We knew losing a player with Josh’s ability and leadership qualities would hurt our team,” explained Reid. “But that’s a challenge we’ll gladly accept anytime. What I’ll miss most about Josh is how much he loved to play the game. I’m certain his attitude left a lasting impression on our program, and we’ll have guys this year who will model that same enthusiasm for playing.”

The Tigers enter the new season having to replace their All-Conference shortstop, as well as their RHP pitcher Stephen Martin, catcher Seth Tschetter and one of the Tiger’s all-time best base stealers, Stefan Sauder. Early in fall 2015, RHP David Cericola underwent season-ending surgery on his right shoulder as well. The Tigers still have plenty of fi repower left, and the program is accustomed to reloading with new talent and developing young players into top performers.

Pitching should once again be the strong suit with seniors Blake Uhlman and Madison Foster both returning in the starter role. Spot starter Eric Douglass also brings quality experience. Sophomores Jonathan Hentschel and Nick Campe return after stellar rookie years, with Hentschel picking up fi ve wins and Campe earning CCAC Reliever of the Year honors with a conference-leading nine saves. The staff will also be bolstered by fi rst-year pitchers Brett Freeman, Chris Rhynes, Noah Reed and Ryan Mills. Returning positional players Jordan Wanner, Will Bates and Phillip

2015 SEASON PREVIEW

Steward will likely be asked to contribute on the mound as well.

Pitching Coach Josh Rebadt believes that “our experience on the mound, along with the maturation of our young catchers, will be evident and can give us a chance to improve in every statistical category.”

Offensively, the Tigers will be looking to replace Altmann in the middle of the lineup with strong performances by Foster, who doubles as an outfi elder when not in the starting rotation. Look also for junior outfi elder Bryan Klendworth and senior third baseman Jordan Hayes to step in and make sure the Tigers don’t miss a step at the plate. The top

of the lineup should feature the trademark speed that Olivet has become known for under Reid’s tenure. Wanner is another speed player and one hungry for a breakout season.

Tanner McLain returns for his second season and will see time in both the outfi eld and at second base. “He is our spark plug, both on the fi eld and in the dugout. He is no doubt an energy-giver,” said Reid of McLain, who is the likely lead-off hitter.

One of most exciting spots on the fi eld should be behind home plate. Olivet’s backstops feature two returning sophomores who split time a year ago. Ben Hill and Kurtis Minton

are both solid defensively and primed to have productive offensive seasons as well. They are joined by freshmen Ben DeYoung and Cam Craver. The young catching core will be fun to watch in upcoming years.

There should be several rookies who make immediate impact for the purple and gold. Ryan Campbell and Drake Daniels, both highly touted recruits, will accept the challenge to be everyday players. The rest of a strong recruiting class includes Jared Burke, Jamal Martin and Brett Freeman.

For the second straight season, Olivet took advantage of the new NAIA rule allowing countable competition in the fall. The Tigers are out to a 5-0 start to the season after completing a three-game sweep of Lincoln Christian College (Ill.) and taking two from Cornerstone University (Mich.) in September and October 2015. After a winter hibernation, the Tigers will resume their season on the road at Truett-McConnell College (Ga.) and Bethel University (Tenn.) in February. The longest road trip of the season will be a 12-game stint at the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational in early March. The

Tigers will then return to Bourbonnais and begin the quest to capture the elusive CCAC Championship.

The Olivet Nazarene community watched faithfully as former Tiger Ben Zobrist became the “acquisition of the season,” according to many analysts, after being traded from the Oakland Athletics to the Kansas City Royals. He lifted the Royals to the pinnacle of baseball, the MLB World Series, and played a key role, tallying four doubles and fi ve runs in helping his team claim the 2015 World Series Championship.

Zobrist, a three-year (2000 to 2003) letter winner, helped lead Olivet to a 120-39-1 record, three CCAC Championships and the program’s fi rst two NAIA World Series appearances in 2002 and 2003. He was an NAIA First Team All-American in 2003 and an Honorable Mention in 2002, and was the CCAC Player of the Year in 2003. He still holds the records for the longest hitting streak at 25 games and is second in saves in a season with six. He fi nished with a career batting average of .376 with 65 runs scored and 65 RBIs, both good for top fi ve in Tiger history for a season. He is the 2003 recipient of the NAIA’s AO Duer Award, awarded annually to one male junior student-athlete who demonstrates character and citizenship. In 2014, he was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame — one of only two from Olivet that year.

Drafted by the Houston Astros in 2004, Zobrist played nine seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays. As a professional, he is a two-time Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star (2009 and 2013). In 2009, he was named the Tampa Bay Rays Most Valuable Player by the Tampa Bay, Fla., Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. He has also played in two MLB World Series competitions (2008 and 2015) and represented the United States in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Also, most recently, he was among 29 players who represented Major League Baseball in the all-star postseason tour of Japan in 2014.

But these days, Zobrist isn’t the only Tiger drawing attention after his time at ONU. Head Coach Todd Reid and his staff watched the 2015 MLB amateur draft very closely this year. Junior shortstop Josh Altmann had received much attention from scouts with an impressive season. As a junior, he was draft eligible. If selected, would have to choose between signing a professional contract and returning for his senior season.

And as it turned out, Altmann was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 22nd round of the 2015 MLB draft. After weighing his options, he determined that the Rangers were committed to seeing him develop and willing to invest in his future. Altmann signed and headed to the Rookie League in Surprise, Arizona, before

the fall semester at Olivet began. In his fi rst professional season, he batted .250 with 12 doubles, three triples and two homeruns. To close it out, he was called up to Advanced-A League for the Rangers in August 2015, fi nishing the season on the playoff roster for their team in High Desert, Calif.

Altmann made it two draft picks in three years for Reid and the ONU baseball program. He joined 2013 MLB) draftee Ben Heller of the Cleveland Indians. Heller may have had the most impressive season of all. He

began 2015 by getting his fi rst Major League appearance in spring training for the Indians. He pitched a scoreless inning against his beloved Milwaukee Brewers, topping out in

triple digits for the fi rst time. He then reported to Lynchburg, Virginia, Advanced-A League, where he notched 12 saves — a career high before his being called up to Double-A and the Akron, Ohio, Rubber Ducks. In his short stint with the Ducks, Heller

struck out 15 batters in his fi rst six innings and fi nished with a 1.50 ERA.

America’s national pastime and the U.S. armed services have a long history of partnership. During wartime, even the best professional baseball players inter-rupted their careers to serve our country. Many U.S. presidents, in their role as commander-in-chief, have thrown out the fi rst pitch of the World Series. Today, every level of baseball honors our fl ag and our military in ways that only begin with the singing of our national anthem and “God Bless America.”

Everyone involved in the ONU baseball program values the freedom protected by our service men and women and wants them to know they are appre-ciated. This year, the Tigers began a new tradition: Coach Reid and his staff forged a relationship with the Illinois Veterans Home in Mante-no. The facility, one of four homes operated by the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs, is staffed with caring and dedicated professionals who provide quality long-term care and services to residents.

CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER

Tiger players and coaches traveled to the veterans home to take the vets fi shing the day before ONU’s season opener. The program also provided the vets with tick-ets for opening day, assistance for getting into the stadium and buddies who enjoyed the game with them.
