PRESIDENT’S REPORT
2016 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Friday, 03rd
June 2016
Kamasan Room, Crowne Plaza
In our last Annual General Meeting in May 2015, a newly elected national executive was voted and
appointed in. We have since then seen the Association have a significant growth which was driven by
the clear articulation of the membership package, expansion of workshops and events and the launch
of Chapters in three additional provinces.
Our Shared Vision is:
a solid and sustainable organisation
spaces for alumni to think and act on development issues
members are served more effectively
Objectives for this National Executive:
1. Strengthen Foundations- including supporting the Chapters and National Executive to
operate more effectively. Setting the organisation up to succeed in the future
2. To further strengthen membership and service delivery
3. To establish strong partnerships with private, civil society and Government sectors
Membership Growth
Last year the aim was to double membership from 2014 and we are happy to report that by the end of
the year in December we reached a membership of 704 financial members.
Underlying membership growth has been the creation and communication of an expanded value
proposition including increased events, PD workshops, provincial activities, employment support and
the strategic use of small grants to support Chapters and recently returned awardees.
This year we are aiming to reach a target of 1,000 financial members.

Workshop
This year we continue with the workshops and networking events. The PD workshops in the first
quarter of 2016 have been delivered in Port Moresby, Enga and Kokopo. We anticipate for the other
Chapters to also hold their workshops in the second half of the year.
Networking events have been held in most Provincial Chapters with the biggest one being held in Port
Moresby on the 26th February 2016. It was a well-attended event with over 120 members present to
welcome back the returning Australia Awards Awardees from 2015.
Chapter Growth & Strengthening
The Association launched 3 new chapters last year, Manus, Enga and AROB. With now a total of 7
Provincial Chapters PNGAAA’s presence and coverage nationwide is becoming more visible with
another 3 Provinces working towards establishing a Chapter – they are Milne Bay Province, Western
Highlands Province and West Sepik Province.
Page 11
9
The Secretariat, Australia Awards – PNG Facility, continues to work with the National Executive and
Chapter Executive to strengthen the chapters as provincial Australia Awards hubs through a
formalised support package and focus on governance skills and planning support for Chapter
executive. Devolving power to provincial Chapters is an ongoing process moving hand in hand with
governance and policy development in the National Executive team.
In supporting this movement, the first National Chapter Forum was held in November 2015, bringing
together seven Chapters and the National Executive in planning the operations of a now genuinely
national association.
As an annual event the Chapter Forum was decided to be held in conjunction with the AGM so that
Chapter Presidents and their executive would be given the opportunity to present their reports at the
AGM
New Initiatives
Leadership Dialogue
High profile alumni and private sector engagement is targeted through the new ‘leadership dialogue’
program. This alumni group will provide high level advocacy and explore the untapped potential of
the associations many private sector members
The launch of the Leadership Dialogue initiative, which, through a series of leadership themed
corporate breakfasts, workshops and mentoring opportunities aims to:
• stimulate the formation of a broad coalition of cross sectoral leaders
• support the formation of ‘shared value’ coalitions or partnerships
• nurture and provide mentoring opportunities for 20 alumni leaders
• raise the profile and leadership footprint of the PNGAAA
The Dialogue drew strong interest from CEOs and public sector leaders, interested in a space for cross
sectoral conversation about development challenges in PNG and supportive of mentoring a new
generation of young alumni leaders.
Ambassador Program
Alongside the newly elected executive, the alumni ambassador program has been launched,
strengthening the leadership team and cultivating the next generation of alumni leaders.

GOROKA CHAPTER
1. Outline the Provincial Chapter Highlights and Achievements
K154, 000.00 (after expenses were deducted) was raised towards the end of 2014
and donated to Climb against Cancer. The Goroka Chapter organized and climbed
Mt. Wilhelm after the fundraising dinner. We are planning on another Climb
against Cancer at the end of 2016, either Mt. Giluwe in Southern Highlands or Mt.
Wilhelm again.
We had our own Professional Development Workshop at the end of 2015, in
partnership with the University of Goroka, on Research & Data Analysis. The
workshop was facilitated by Goroka Chapter’s Dr. Dianne Aringa-Panta.
The Meet & Greet organized on the 5th
of March 2016 was a success! A little over
50 people attended, and 28 members paid up their annual membership fee! Mr.
Peter Leahy, PNG Facility Director, and Clara Numbassa were present during the
event. Their presence highlighted the event!
The Hon. Bire Kimisopa, a PNGAAA himself, planned to host a Cocktail
Function for Goroka Chapter members in February this year but did not eventuate
due to the recent political impasse in the province. He just postponed the event to
a later date. His intention for hosting the event was to conduct a speed networking
and also to create a platform for the elites in Goroka to spend 5 minutes to discuss
what services or organizations they represent.
The chapter members are also supporting our Vice President, Mr. Matthew
Omena, in cash or kind, to provide delicious local meals to the patients of Goroka
Provincial Hospital. Goroka Provincial Hosptial has 4 wards, and we are visiting 1
ward every Sunday.
The Goroka Chapter’s Secretary, Mrs. Pamela Bobola-Krisimpa, had recently
facilitated a training on Public Speaking for 35 aspiring young women leaders
from the seven (7) districts of Eastern Highlands Province, during the Goroka
YWCA’s Young Women Leadership Workshop held between 20th
and 23rd
March
2016. Goroka YWCA received funding from the Small Grants Fund.
Page 25
23
Goroka Chapter members participate in the Walk for Life, which was launched
earlier this year in Goroka. We are encouraging all members to Walk for Life and
prepare to Climb Against Cancer later this year.
We are also having ongoing conversations with women to increase Women’s
Participation in Leadership and Decision-Making Roles. We use opportunities
such as Women Ministry meetings in churches and community meetings to do this
activity.
2. Challenges
One major challenge for Goroka Chapter is the Provincial Administration impasse
which started back in 2012 and is ongoing.
We had no Professional Development Workshop in the first half of this year as
you are probably aware:
- Political impasse in our Provincial Administration
- The bulk of our members are from the University of Goroka, and as such, we
couldn’t organize a workshop due to the students’ unrest at the University of
Goroka towards the end of 2015 and at the beginning of this year.
- the Prime Minister’s saga unrest at UOG went on for 8 weeks
Members of our chapter have put forward 4 Proposals for Small Grants Funding.
However, the Goroka Executives needed an in-depth information session before
we could assist and endorse our members’ proposals. Secretariat need to socialize
the concept to us.
Email is not effective in communication with provincial members. Mobile phones
is the effective mode for communication with PNGAAA members in provinces.
Goroka Chapter would love to promote PNGAAA through our membership drive
by way of ‘Branding’. We would like to provide brand merchandise such as caps,
backpack, biros, cups, shirts, compendiums (Folder), etc, upon registration. This
will increase our membership drive, and also, identify us as members of an elite
group.
How can the Provincial Chapter Executives be involved in making decisions at
the National Executive level? We need to provide inputs into certain agendas that
require a collaborative effort in making decision for PNGAAA.
Page 26
24
3. What is next?
a. The first and foremost priority now for the Goroka Chapter is to conduct a
Professional Development Workshop for our financial members on “How to
Become a Consultant”.
b. We would like to increase our membership drive through a Chapter Quarterly
Newsletter and monthly flyers.
c. Goroka Chapter members are walking every Sunday morning with the Walk
for Life team to prepare to climb for Cancer at the end of this year at either
Mt. Giluwe or Mt. Wilhelm.
d. We are in the process to select proposals from members and endorse for Small
Grants award, and they are: “Leadership from Grassroots Level Up”;
Awareness on Anti-Social Behaviour”; “Refurbishment of Goroka Provincial
Psychiatric Ward and Increasing Women’s Access to Leadership and
Decision-Making Roles.
e. We would like to propose that the Secretariat involve many executive
members from the provinces if possible in the AGM’s and Executive
Meetings as a motivation to keep chapters active and progressive.

AROB Chapter
October 2015
1. Chapter Highlights and Achievements
1.1 Our biggest highlight was the AROB Chapter Launch that was on 7 October,
2015. Since then we’ve had an additional 4 new members with two more are
joining soon.
1.2 As a work in progress, we have linked up with seven local associations and they
are on standby for PD workshops that we are about to host later this month. We
already had other workshops in October 2015 leading up to our launching
1.3 And in February 2016, we had Steven Mel who came and conducted our chapter
consultation and planning workshop.
1.4 The PNGAAA AROB Chapter had just had a successful election of new
executives and they are: Jezreel Ivomari (President), Anne Dandava (Vice
President), Joanne Kamuka (Secretary), Medley Koito (Treasurer), Stella
Tunim (Executive) and Nigel Taniung (Executive).
2. Challenges
2.1 Most of our members have work commitments and it is difficult to get everyone
together for meetings.
2.2 Some of our members reside and work in Buka Town, 200km away and as such,
they don't take part in our activities.
2.3 BSP Bank has recently turned down our request to open a new account as they
need little adjustment on PNGAAA IPA documents.
2.4 The AROB Chapter was founded with zero funding and there is still money
owed to a lender.
2.5 Certain members are yet to pay up their credits to PNGAAA AROB Chapter.
3. What is next?
3.1 Our first PD workshop is being planned for mid-June. We are optimistic it will draw more
