Ashasbeenthecaseoverthepastseveralyears,tenniscontinuedtoflourishinCanadain2014andsurpassedthehighexpectationssetin2013onnearlyeverylevel.thoughundernewleadershipandoperatingwithafreshperspective,themissionandvisionoftennisCanadaremainsthesame–leadthegrowthoftennisinCanadaandbecomeaworld-leadingtennisnation.theprogresstowardsthesegoalswastremendousoverthepastyearanditiswithsincerepleasureandimmenseexcitementthatwesharethatprogresswithyouthroughthepagesofthisreport.

thefuturelooksbright.the2014nationalresearchstudyonthehealthofthesportoftennisinCanadaproducedremarkableresults.thestudyshowedthat,inthepast12months,morethan6.5millionCanadiansplayedtennisatleastonce.thisisa32%increaseover2012whenthelastparticipationnumbersweretracked.Popularityofthesportisalsoontherisewith51%ofCanadianssayingtheyareeithersomewhatorveryinterestedintennis,upfrom38%in2012.ofthe6.5millionparticipants,5.3millionplayatleastfourtimesperyearwhilenearly1.7millionareconsideredfrequentplayerswhohitthecourtsatleasttwicepermonthduringthesummer.

Alsoshowingdouble-digitgrowthisparticipationandinterestamongstyouth.morethan600,000childrenbetweentheagesof6-11pickeduparacquetinthelastyear.morethanhalfofthosechildrenplayedatleastfourtimesinthat12-monthspan;thisisanincreaseofmorethan80%forthatagegroup.thestudyalsoshowsthatthemajorityofthenewfaninterestinthesportoveralliscomingfromayoungerdemographic.

thisgrowthcanbeattributedtosomanythings.theeffortfromprovincialandterritorialassociationsdownthroughtheclubsystemtoimplementnewprogrammingandkeeppeopleengagedinthesportisphenomenal.Wewouldnotbeabletoachieveourgoalswithouttheirsupport.ourfundraisingteamhasraisedmoniesthatgospecificallyintoensuringkidshavetheopportunitytotrythesportforthefirsttime.newfacilitieshaveopened,particularlyontheeastCoast,bolsteringparticipationnumbersforthatregion.thepoolofcoachesisgrowingwithinstructorcoursesacrossthecountry,makingsurepeoplearelearningfromcertifiedprofessionals.Andthelistgoeson.

However,itissuccessthatoftenbreedssuccess,andtheperformancesontheinternationalstagefromthelikesofeugenieBouchard,milosRaonic,vasekPospisil,DanielnestorandmoreserveasinspirationforallCanadianswhowanttofollowthem,cheerforthem,andbelikethem.thespecificsoftheirhistory-makingaccomplishmentsareoutlinedinmoredetailinthereport,buteachofthemachievedbothpersonalbestsandfirstsfortheircountrythispastyear,catapultingthemevenfurtherintostardomandintotheheartsoffansacrosstheglobe.Wecouldnotbemoreproudofthem.

Itisbecauseofasharedpassionandloveforthesportoftennisthatallofourstaff,partners,players,stakeholdersandfansareseeingsuchenormousreturnsontheirinvestment–whetheritbetime,money,energyoranynumberofotherthings–andweareexcitedtoseeevenmoregrowthaswemoveforwardinto2015.

WithtennisCanada’smissionbeingtoleadthegrowthoftennisacrossthecountry,thecommunity,grassrootsandrecreationalcompetitivelevelsofthesportremainoftheutmostimportanceinachievingourgoals.Continuedfocuswasputoncreating,implementingandimprovingprogramsinplacethataffecteveryonefromkidsundereightyearsofagewhoarejuststartingoutallthewaythroughtouniversityandcollegeprogramswhichencourageplayerstokeepplayingthesporttheylove.

thelittleAcesmajormarketstrategycontinuestothrivewitheightcommunitiesacrossthecountrygrowingthesportoftennisthroughgrassrootskidstennisprograms.Anincreasedemphasiswasputonstartingkidstennisleagues.theseleaguesprovidelowcost,affordableprogramsforkidswithafocusonplay.Akidstennisleaguesimplementationguideforinstructors,tennisprofessionalsandcommunityleaderswasdevelopedwiththepurposetoprovideleagueorganizersallthenecessaryinformationtorunasuccessfulprogram.kidstennisleaguesareanintegralpartofgrowingthegameaswellasensuringtheloveoftennisisinstilledatayoungage.littleAcesProgramsattractedmorethan1,200kidstennisleagueparticipants,touchedover9,000kidsinschoolsandhelpeddriveparticipantsintolocalclubs,parksandrecreationprograms.

Additionally,theBuildingtennisCommunities(BtC)programcontinuedtoflourishas10newcommunitiesjoinedin2014,includingCalgary,Clearwater,kentville,Casselman,Amherstburg,Cymbria,Parcextension,laval,l’ile-Perrotandnouvelle.

Anew“learntoPlay”curriculumwasalsocreatedtobuildasolidfoundationforfuturesuccessandtopromoteenjoymentforkidsplayingtennis.Itisbasedontheprogressivetennisformatandhaseasy-to-followlessonplansandactivitiesfortheearlyfundamentalstageofdevelopment.thisresourceisforinstructors,programmersandplayleaderstodelivereffectivelessons.theresourcealsoincludescomprehensivevideos.

Furthertotheaboveenhancements,tennisCanadawasabletosupportseveralunderservedareasthroughpartnerandsponsorcontributionstothecommunitytennisdepartment.In2014tennisCanadapartneredwiththeBoysandgirlsClubsofCanadaforapilotprojectinontarioandintroducedthesportoftennistonineclubsand280kidsundertheageof12whoallparticipatedinleagues.thisprogramwillbeexpandingin2015.

tennisCanadaalsopartneredwithcommunityprojectsandorganizationssuchasthesunshineProject,Jane/FinchCommunitytennisAssociationandtheDougPhilpottInnerCityChildren’sFund.theseorganizationshelpbreakdownthebiggestbarriersthatpreventmanychildrenfromenjoyingthesportoftennisincludingcourtavailability,costandequipment.

Askidsgrowandcontinuewiththesportthroughelementaryandhighschool,itisimperativethatapathwaybeinplaceforthemtoplaytennisthatisnotnecessarilypartofthehighperformancestream.UniversitytennisinCanadacontinuestogrowimmenselyandthisgrowthisevidentinthecompetitivenatureshownatoursixthannualnationalcollegeanduniversitychampionshipswhichtookplaceinmontrealinconjunctionwithRogersCuppresentedbynationalBank.theUniversityofAlbertawontheirfirsttitle,havingcompetedintheeventforsixconsecutiveyears.therearenow22Canadianuniversitiesthatcompeteannuallyforthenationaltitle.

Forthesecondconsecutiveyear,theU18U.s.CollegeshowcaseeventwasheldinconjunctionwiththeU18CanadiannationalJuniorChampion-shipstoshowcaseyoungCanadiantalentinfrontofU.s.collegecoaches.thiseventhasgrownsince2013withmorethan30coachesattendingtheshowcase.therearecurrently124CanadiansplayinginU.s.collegesin2014makingU.s.orCanadianuniversitytennisaviableoptionforallyoungCanadianplayers.

InherfifthseasoninthenationaltrainingCentre(ntC),FrancoiseAbandatookahugeleapforwardontheprofessionalcircuit,risingfroma2013year-endrankingofworldno.563toahighofno.175in2014.Justbeforeturning17,Abandawonherfirstpro-levelsinglescrownatthe$25,000Portst.lucieChallengerinFloridainJanuary.shealsowasafinalistatthe$25ktournamentingatineauinJuly.mostimpressively,onlyafewmonthsaftermakingtheJuniorFrenchopensemifinals,shelostjustsixgamesinthreequalifyingmatchestomaketheUsopenmaindraw–becomingtheyoungestCanadiansince1987toplayaslammaindraw.

Atjust14yearsofage,BiancavanessaAndreescucapturedarguablythemostimportantU14andU16titlesinthesameyear.earlierin2014,shewontheprestigiousU14lesPetitAsinFrancetobecomethethirdCanadiantoeverwinthetitle.theninDecember,shehelpedcontinueCanada’sdominanceattheU16orangeBowl.FollowinginthefootstepsoferinRoutliffe,glorialiang,andCharlotteRobillard-millettebeforeher,Andreescube-camethefourthconsecutiveCanadiangirltocapturetheesteemedtrophyinFlorida.shealsowonthreeItFjuniortitlesthroughoutthecalendaryear.

thefull-timenationaltrainingCentreinmontrealisnowinitseighthseasonandisworkingtodevelopthenextgenerationofCanadiantennisstars.Forthe2014-2015season,theprogramwillfeatureeightreturningplayersandthreenewadditionsin14-year-oldsAuger-Aliassimeandmuambaand15-year-oldJoshuaPeck.Withhisselection,AlbertanPeckalsoisthefirstplayerfromoutsidethethreelargestprovincesofontario,QuebecandBritishColumbiatojointheprogram.

AllthreeoftennisCanada’snationaljuniortrainingprogramsintoronto,montreal,andvancouvertookstepsforwardaswellin2014.notably,thevancouvereditionsignificantlyexpandeditsactivityin2014andhasthuslyseenanincreaseinthedepthandqualityofitsplayers.thankstothethreecourtsitnowuses,theprogramaccommodated20kidsaged7-15frombothBritishColumbiaandAlberta,helpingtoprovidetheseyoungathleteswithamorecompetitivetrainingenvironment.

BouchardledateamcomprisedofAleksandraWozniak,FichmanandDabrowskitoahistoricFedCupresult,going4-0throughtwotiesagainstserbiaandslovakiatohelphercountryearnaspotintheeight-teamFedCupWorldgroupforthefirsttimeunderthecurrentformat.onthemen’sside,afterfallingtoJapanintheWorldgroupfirstroundwithoutRaonicandPospisilduetoinjury,theDavisCupteam,alsofeaturingnestorandFrankDancevic,bouncedbackintheplay-offsdefeatingColombia3-2inHalifaxandsewinguptheirspotintheupperechelonofthecompetitionforafourthstraightyear.In2015,bothteamswillcompeteinthehighestlevelofthecompetitionsimultaneouslyforthefirsttime.

Withsomuchsuccesscurrentlybeingexperiencedatalllevelsofthesport,thereisacontinuedimportanceplacedonidentifyingandrecruitingnew,talentedathletestothepipeline.In2014,nationalBankbecametheofficialsponsorofthetalentrecruitmentanddevelopmentprogramnationally.overthenextthreeyears,theirsupportwillhelpgivethousandsofchildrenachancetodreamaboutbeingCanada’snextbigtennisstar.makingamovebacktoitsoriginaldesignconcept,theprogramcontinueditsexpansionintermsofthenumberofplayersrecruitednationwide.morethan1000childrenranginginagefrom5-8yearsoldwererecruitedtooutdoorsummerclubsinQuebecorskillsDayeventsinontario,BritishColumbia,AlbertaandnewBrunswick.Inall,14indoorfacilitiesinfivedifferentprovinceswereinvolvedaswellas26outdoorclubsinQuebec.thisnumberwillbeexpandedin2015toidentifyevenmorepotentialtalentacrossthecountry.

lastly,sportsciencecontinuestoexpanditsroleinthenationalteamprogram.DartfishUsAcontinuedtoprovideworld-classvideoanalysisservicesforplayersparticipatingintheU12nationalcampprogramaswellasfortheDavisCupteam.Aprofessionalstrokelibrarywascreatedforusebyallnationalteamcoachesandwenowhavehighqualityvideofootageoftheworld’stopinternationalandCanadianplayers.theuseoftennisCanada’sprivateDartfishtvchannelwassuccessfullyexpandedtothecoacheducationprogram.movingforward,moreresourceswillbeputintotheareaofsportsciencewiththegoalbeingtoimplementandintegratesportscienceandsportmedicineprogramsfromtheprofessionalplayerprogramsdownthroughtheclubstructure.

AnothersuccessfulcalendaryearisinthebooksforCanadianseniorstennisbothonthenationalandinternationallevels,withplayersfromacrossthecountryprovingtobesomeofthebestintheworld.

theathletescompetinginturkeyatthesuperseniorsworldchampionships,forages60andolder,performedexceptionallywellashascometobeexpected.Intheteamcompetition,Canadacapturedtwomedals, includingthecontinueddominanceofthewomen’sover-80team.muffiegrieve,RosemarieAsch,JoyceCutts,andJoanBradichcametogethertowintheDorisHartCupforanunprecedentedfourthyearinarow,meaningCanadaisstilltheonlycountrytowintheeventsinceitwasinauguratedin2011.thewomen’sover-75team,featuringIngeWeber,evelynHuswit,HeatherkontaxopoulosandPennygoldrick,alsoclinchedabronzemedalintheQueensCupcompetition,finishingthirdoutofnineteams.

InsideCanadianborders,seniorstournamentsacrossthecountrycontinuedtoflourishwithmosteventsseeingtheirdrawsizesincreasefromthepreviousyear.thequalityofcompetitionwasoutstandingwithmanyformerDavisCup,FedCup,WtAandAtPplayersparticipatinginthenumerousnationalindoor,nationaloutdoor,ItF,andprovincialevents.

theseniorsseasonculminatedwiththestevestevensseniornationalChampionshipsintorontofromAugust17-23.HeldatDonaldaClub,graniteClubandtorontolawntennisClub,over400players fromacrossCanadatookpart in thefirst-classcompetitionwhichwaswell receivedbytheathletesastheyplayedfortheirnationalrankingandinternationalteampositions.

WhEELChAIRTENNIS

WiththedevelopmentprojectsthathavebeeninitiatedoverthelastseveralyearsbytennisCanada,theprovincialtennisandwheelchairassociationsandcommunityorganizationsareshowingpromisingresultsandanincreasingnumberofparticipants,leadingtothecontinuedgrowthofwheelchairtennisinCanadain2014.

newgrassrootsprogramswerelaunchedinontario,Alberta,newBrunswickandBritishColumbia,andcombinedwithalready-existingprograms,atotalof50newplayerswereexposedtointroductorywheelchairtennisthroughouttheyear.AnewpartnershipwasalsoforgedwiththeHollandBloor-viewkidsRehabilitationHospital,whichhasseenwheelchairtennisbecomearegularcomponentinthechildren’sphysicaleducation.

thesecondyearoftargetingthegreatertorontoAreashowedencouragingresults.thechildreninmississauga,ont.’skidstenniswheelchairleaguehaveprogressedverywellandoneoftheparticipantswasinvitedtoparticipateintheItFAmericasJuniorDevelopmentcamplastsummer.Buildingonthesuccessofthekidsprogram,anewadultgrassrootsprogramwasstartedinthefall.Inaddition,theweeklyprogramsatl’AmoreauxtennisCentreandUniversityoftorontoscarboroughcontinuetoofferregularplayingopportunitiestorecreationalplayers.

nationalcoachkaischrameyercontinuedhisworkineducatingmorewheelchairtennisinstructorstogrowthepooloftalentedcoachesavailabletoworkwithCanada’srisingnumbersofwheelchairtennisathletes.throughworkshopsinvancouver,torontoandottawa,40coacheswereexposedtothebasicsofteachingwheelchairtennis.Furthermore,in2015wheelchairtenniswillbeintegratedintotheQuebectennisInstructorCurriculum,exposingeverynewQuebeccoachtothesport.

twoseparatestreamsexistincoachingcertificationfollowingcompletionoftheinitialInstructorandClubProfessional1course,withindividualsabletoselecttheclubpropath,competitionstream,orboth.throughoutthecalendaryear,over500peopleattendedcertificationcoursesintheInstructorandClubProstream(Instructor,ClubPro1and2),whileover60coachesattendedcertificationcoursesinthecompetitivestream(Coach2and3).

Withafocusonprovidingitsmemberswithmorebenefitsandservices,newpartnershipswereformedwithyonex,Prince,ReBounces,andBrokerstrusttoofferadditionalexclusivediscountsthroughtPAmembership.thetPAwebsitealsorevampedandenhanceditsvideolibraryresourcesection.

Inthepasttwoyears,threesuccessfulfacilitieshaveopenedtheirdoorswithassistancefromtennisCanada.oneinFredericton,oneinDartmouthandoneintruro,makingitthreebrandnewtennisfacilitiesontheeastCoast,aregionthatwasindireneedofindoortenniscourts.Anincreaseininterestinthesportcanalreadybetrackedinthemaritimesasourannualstudyshowsthatfanengagementwithtennishastripledinthepasttwoyears.Fourkeymarketshavebeenidentifiedasbeingaprioritymovingforward;Halifax,Winnipeg,Calgaryandvancouver.Progressisbeingmadeinallfourmarketswiththehelpoflocaladvocates,partnersandprovincialtennisassociations.
