2013 ICHA Soccer Tournament Book

The roots of the ICHA were planted in 1977 at Glengarda School when Egidio Novelletto began a soccer program for mentally challenged individuals. The Association was granted charitable, non profit status on July 22, 1987.

Since that time, the Association has taken on the responsibility of delivering a number of additional social and recreational activities. They include social activities designed to integrate our membership into the community. The ICHA Valentines day, Halloween and Christmas dinner / dances are filled with friendship, good food, dancing and fun. In addition to the soccer program, track & field, bocce ball, poly hockey (floor hockey) and basketball have been added to meet the needs and demands of these special individuals. These programs are currently run year round out of the Novelletto Rosati Complex on various weekday evenings. ICHA social members participate in many out of town soccer tournaments throughout the summer and have experienced the pleasure of traveling as a group to such places as Cleveland, Ohio (clog dancing competition ), the Thousand Islands, African Lion Safari and Canadas Wonderland .

The ICHA has established a fund to offer bursaries at both the University of Windsor and St Clair College. Bursary funds are accessible to people with physical and mental disabilities. In recognition of an individual who contributed greatly to the early success of the ICHA, the Dario Rossi Memorial Bursary was established and is available to an ICHA volunteer who is moving into a post secondary school environment.

Today the ICHA is one of the largest organizations of its kind in Ontario with a social membership of 200 individuals and a voting membership of 80. It is important to note that our Association is run entirely through the efforts of our volunteers. Our social members range in age from 10 to over 50, with the average age of 25.

Membership in the ICHA is open to all people with a physical or mental disability in Windsor and Essex County. The word Italian in our name reflects the ethnic background of our founding members and recognizes their generous contributions and the commitment theyve given to the special individuals in our organization over the years. In October of 2002, the ICHA opened the Novelletto Rosati Complex with the ultimate goal of providing a home base for all people with a physical or mental disability in our community. Through the generosity of all levels of government and the overwhelming support of businesses and individuals in Windsor and throughout Essex County, the ICHA was successful in this endeavor.

GREETINGS FROM THE I.C.H.A. PRESIDENTIt is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all the participants, coaches, supporters and volunteers to the 2013 ICHA HandiCAPABLE Indoor Soccer Tournament. The ICHA has proudly hosted this tournament every year since 1988 and we are pleased that the tournament continues to attract special athletes.

The ICHA is a volunteer based organization that supports disabled people through recreational and social programs through funds raised in the community. For twenty six years we have held this tournament to provide disabled athletes the opportunity to display their skills and talent in friendly competition. Our luncheons, banquet and award presentations have made each tournament a special occasion for each participant.

This year our athletes will benefit from a new playing surface and an open field concept. A new 1 day tournament format is being introduced which we trust will be convenient for everyone.

We are indebted to all our supporters and volunteers who contribute to the success of our event. Best wishes to all our participants, families and supporters for an enjoyable and memorable tournament.

This year marks the 26th year of the ICHAs Indoor Soccer Tournament. Fourteen teams from across Ontario and Michigan will be participating. A special welcome to teams from Brampton, London, South Simcoe, Kitchener, Roscommon and our teams from Windsor & Essex County.

To all athletes, you continue to inspire us with your enthusiasm, love of soccer and sportsmanship. We look forward to seeing many smiles, cheers and goals this weekend.

To all coaches and volunteers, thank you for continuing to carry the spirit of these games. Hosting an annual event like this could not be possible without your support and dedication to our shared cause. We are grateful for all you do!

Do you have a Special Needs family member and are looking for help or a night out? Why dont you join the ICHA bocce program.

My name is Valerie Tessier, I have been overseeing the Bocce program for more than ten (10) years. We have grown from 10 to 60 athletes per night. We promote exercise through games like Kings Court and enhance social abilities through dancing. We have friendly, helpful volunteers and athletes of all abilities.

The Bocce program runs from 6:00 to 7:00 PM every Monday night at the Novelletto Rosati Complex ; the dancing portion follows and continues to 8:00 PM. We have been training some of the competitive athletes for out of town competition. Each year in January, we attend a bocce tournament hosted by the Fogolar Furlan Club. Our door is always open. Come and check us out.

BASKETBALL PROGRAM

The ICHA basketball program has continued to grow and develop from nine athletes to thirty athletes of various abilities. The season runs from October to June , with practices between 6:00 to 8:00PM every Thursday at St James elementary school gymnasium. The athletes enjoy learning and interacting with their team mates, coaches and volunteers. The athletes work very hard in developing their skills; they look forward to attend tournaments.We would welcome new athletes to our team.

Each year the ICHA will accept nominations and recognize an individual who has made a significant contribution of soccer within their community. The individual will be honoured at the Annual Indoor Soccer Tournament banquet. A plaque and picture of the individual being honoured will be prominently displayed on the ICHA Soccer Hall of Fame Wall inside the NRC.

Every team participating inthe ICHA indoor soccer tournamentwill nominate one of their players.

The player should be someone who demonstrated teamwork,

sportsmanshipand a positive attitude.

All nominees nameswill be pooled

and one winnerwill be

randomly selected.

The Kiwanis Club has teamed up with the ICHA to make a special award presenta-tion during the award banquet festivities. The Bud Roberts Team Player Award is presented annually to a local competi-tor who participates in the C or D level competition and who bests exhibit a team first approach to their play.

The individual may be chosen based on their play in the tournament , for cheering their team mates or simply being there for practices throughout the year. From learning from Bud Roberts achievements during his lifetime, we felt that he was truly a team player and that his trophy would serve as a legacy to the way he lived life.
