In Fiscal Year 2013, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park welcomed 599,415 guests. Visitors enjoyed our permanent sculpture and horticulture collections, concerts and education programs. Three annual exhibitions drew hundreds of thousands of visitors to experience bountiful fall horticulture displays during Chrysanthemums and More!, the spirit of the holidays with Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World, and the wonder and beauty of tropical butterflies in the exhibition Butterflies Are Blooming. Three temporary sculpture exhibitions offered guests the opportunity to explore the depth and breadth of Contemporary art. The fall exhibition Shattered: Contemporary Sculpture in Glass, served as ArtPrize at Meijer Gardens. Winter brought the enigmatic figures of Dutch sculptor Hanneke Beaumont to our galleries with the exhibition Connected and Disconnected: The Sculpture of Hanneke Beaumont. Looking East, Facing West: The World of Zhang Huan explored themes of physical endurance, spiritual tranquility, Chinese history and a reverence for Buddhism. The exhibition featured the artist’s Long Island Buddha, which will be permanently sited in The Richard and Helen DeVos Japanese Garden.

Meijer Gardens was most fortunate to add Equal Intervals, Equal Elevations by Richard Serra to the permanent collection through the generosity of Fred and Lena Meijer and The Meijer Foundation. This work of art can be found in the lower falls area of the Sculpture Park.

The Outdoor Summer Concert Series is intentionally planned to host artists that will draw people from all walks of life. Classic rock favorites are always popular and this year included Steve Miller Band, Peter Frampton and The Beach Boys. Returning artists such as Indigo Girls, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, Umphrey’s McGee and Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers once again delighted audiences. New artists to Meijer Gardens like Sheryl Crow, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Owl City and Harry Connick, Jr. were also audience favorites. Tickets sold exceeded 46,000, an indication

that great music is a wonderful way to connect people to our broader mission of art and horticulture. Similarly popular, the Tuesday Evening Music Club series, free with admission every Tuesday evening in July and August, featured local and regional bands. More than 12,000 people enjoyed shows from bands such as AnDro, Bennett, Cabildo and the Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra, among many others.

Meijer Gardens is extremely thankful to be afforded the opportunity to create The Richard and Helen DeVos Japanese Garden. Construction continued at a strong pace throughout 2013 with the excavation, structures and much of the infrastructure having been completed in 2013. Our attention now turns to planting horticulture and installing sculptures. The garden will open in June of 2015.

Fiscal Year 2013 also saw the publication of America’s Garden of Art. This 240-page book details our collections and features essays by Joseph Becherer, Larry tenHarmsel and me.

It is very appropriate that each year we publish this annual report to honor and thank our donors for making Meijer Gardens grow. We are fortunate that Fred and Lena Meijer have given so generously to make this institution possible. Together, the thousands of gifts we receive allow for great exhibitions to be presented, sustain our robust education programs and lectures and maintain our extensive buildings and grounds.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, staff and volunteers we are humbled by your generosity. Please know it is most appreciated.

Gratefully,

David S. Hooker President & CEO

Butterflies Are BloomingOur most popular annual horticultural exhibition featured thousands of tropical butterflies in the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory and a display of Monarch caterpillars. Native to Michigan, Monarch caterpillars were on display in the Seasonal Display Greenhouse and feeding on milkweed plants. More than 170,600 guests visited during March and April, 2013, to enjoy Butterflies Are Blooming.

Chrysanthemums and More!Truly an autumn horticultural feast for the senses, the expanded Chrysanthemums and More! featured mums throughout the gardens and grounds, with a spectacular wall of mums on display in the Seasonal Display Greenhouse, which creatively incorporated not only mums, but plantings of cabbage, kale, millet and more! The more-and-more popular Mum Day in October offered members and guests horticulture demonstrations, walking tours and interactions with our expert horticulturists. More than 72,000 guests visited during Chrysanthemums and More!

Holiday TraditionsThe Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World exhibition in FY 2013 (calendar year 2012) put a special focus on nature. Many people use natural materials as a way to celebrate their holiday traditions and customs and we prominently featured those in our promotions, our educational programming and the presentation

of our displays. Some of the cultural traditions involving natural materials that were on display included Lithuanian straw ornaments, Japanese kadomatsu, English mistletoe and Mexican poinsettias. The much-loved Railway Garden display included natural components like twigs, bark and seedpods and five new buildings were added including Fifth Third Ballpark, Jersey Junction, Paddock Place (now Mangiamo!), Meyer May House and Voigt House.

In addition, a new Korea display debuted featuring an authentic hanbok, the traditional dress of Seollal, the Korean New Year. This exquisite garment was made of vibrant, natural silk with intricate detailing. More than 76,800 guests delighted in the displays of Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World.

Other HighlightsDesigner and gardener Paula Hayes gave the Secchia Garden Lecture entitled Artful Containers. The Lena Meijer Children’s Garden offered kid-friendly plantings that were chosen for their appeal to the senses. At the West Michigan Home & Garden Show, our expert horticulturists gave presentations for attendees. Plant Shows remained a popular destination for horticulture fans including the Orchid Show, the Michigan All-State Bonsai Show and many more.

Hanneke BeaumontConnected and Disconnected: The Sculpture of Hanneke Beaumont featured the enigmatic figures of the Dutch sculptor Hanneke Beaumont. Displayed individually, as pairs, or in small groups, her figures were arranged in arresting compositions marked by physical stillness in poignant contrast to the provocative psychological and emotional associations the figures conveyed. Beaumont initially created works in clay and then translated the form into bronze or iron—all of which were represented in the exhibition. In addition, several of the artist’s companion drawings were on display.

Zhang HuanLooking East, Facing West: The World of Zhang Huan featured themes of physical endurance and spiritual tranquility, Chinese history and heritage, and an interest in and reverence for Buddhism. This exhibition explored the world of Zhang Huan both thematically and artistically. While works of sculpture were central to this presentation, including his iconic copper and steel Long Island Buddha, several of the artist’s paintings and photographs were also featured. Although forms and materials vary, Zhang Huan’s commitment to exploring the dimensions of the human condition and expanding the figurative tradition is unfailingly discerning. This exhibition was organized by Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in cooperation with the artist and Pace Gallery, New York, Beijing and London.

ArtPrize/Body DoubleShattered: Contemporary Sculpture in Glass was ArtPrize at Meijer Gardens and served as the fall sculpture exhibition. This exhibition explored the depth and dimension of sculpture by artists working in glass. A sculptural entity in its own right, contemporary glass is marked by creative, conceptual and formal explorations in keeping with the dynamic persona of contemporary art as a whole. The exhibition broke down preconceptions about glass art and shattered traditional boundaries for an understanding of sculpture as well. As a result, this presentation offered a global panorama of contemporary glass. This exhibition was organized in partnership with Habatat Gallery.

Permanent Collection AdditionsAcquisitions to the collection included gifts in honor of Fred Meijer, such as 2-D and 3-D work by artists like Beverly Pepper, Manuel Neri, and Mark diSuvero. Acquisition included Equal Intervals, Equal Elevations by Richard Serra, a gift of Fred and Lena Meijer and the Meijer Foundation. Works to be sited in The Richard and Helen DeVos Japanese Garden included Long Island Buddha, by Zhang Huan, Untitled by Anish Kapoor, and Existence by Masayuki Koorida.

Classes, Camps and Special EventsA wide variety of classes attracted returning students and new participants. Many cooking classes, including Cold Days/Hot Soups, Cooking with Pumpkin and Squash, and Non-Dairy Cheese were successful. Our Spring Gardening Mini-Series brought in more than 500 participants and our regular art classes catered to both beginners and more serious students. Summer camps were enjoyed by young children as well as older campers. A week-long camp was piloted and found to be very popular.

Arts and Sculpture ProgramsPublic programming encompassed an array of presentations, including art history lectures, gallery walks by experts, artist demonstrations and staff perspective discussions. For the Hanneke Beaumont exhibition, highlights included a gallery walk focusing on body language and facial expressions, and a lecture about art that conveys human conflicts and yearnings. For the Zhang Huan exhibition, highlights included a gallery walk on Buddhist themes and a combination lecture/gallery walk on contemporary Chinese art. In addition, we presented a very popular panel discussion for ArtPrize. The annual Art & Sculpture Lecture presented by Bernar Venet, examined his 40-year career and his visionary thinking.

Garden and Plant PresentationsPlant shows were presented throughout the year, from the smaller Rose, and Daylily Shows to the more all-encompassing Orchid and All-State Bonsai Shows. The Secchia Garden Lecture presenter was Paula Hayes, a garden designer who is well known for her exquisite, high-end terrariums. She represented the perfect combination of art and gardens. New this year was a summer tram tour titled Explore the Outdoor Gardens; the tour was developed in response to guests’ requests and was very well received.

School ProgramsMore than $142,000 in revenue was brought in through schooltours and programs. Though hundreds of individual classes come for field trips, some programs have a wider scope: all Head Start students in Kent County experience the Children’s Garden, all Grand Rapids Public Schools 4th graders enjoy Art & Science of Observation tours, and all Grand Rapids Public Schools 6th graders step up to Fitness Fun in the Sculpture Park challenges. New classroom activities were added, including a butterfly “Wing It” activity, a Polish Szopka activity and poetry writing based on the Hanneke Beaumont exhibition.

Family ProgramsAnimal Adventures, a collaboration with John Ball Zoo, focused on four animals, with engaging activities for each one. Who Am I: A Butterfly Ballet, a collaboration with Grand Rapids Ballet, presented a unique butterfly story told through dance. Cozy Tales for Winter Days entertained preschoolers with themed stories and related activities. Activities at Michigan’s Farm Garden included weekly quilting, and family-themed weekends. In the Children’s Garden Dorothy and Toto in the Children’s Garden, a unique version of the original story, was performed countless times. Let’s Keep Moving on the Kids’ Tram, a special tour for families with kids, combined fitness activities with looking at sculpture.
