Plano native Kellyn Acosta was named toESPN NEXT as one of the top 10 prep athletesin the country.

FC Dallas is the latest to support the hypeas the Major League Soccer team has signedthe 16-year-old phenom as part of the league’sHometown Player initiative.

“FC Dallas is excited to sign Kellyn Acostato a professional contract,” said Schellas Hyn-dman, FC Dallas head coach. “Kellyn is a verygifted player. He was the youngest member ofthe U.S. U17 National Team last year and he hasplayed a lot of different positions during histime with the U.S. U17 Residency Program.”

Acosta got his first taste of national levelplay before reaching U17 though as he was alsopart of the U15 National Team. The Plano na-tive is now part of the U18 National Teamplayer pool, most recently taking the pitch atthe Lisbon International Tournament.

FC Dallas has seen Acosta closer to hometoo in the club’s development program.

Playing for FC Dallas during academy sea-son, Acosta started 27-of-28 games for the U16team, scoring nine times and helping lead hisside to the playoffs. Acosta also played up withFC Dallas’ U18 squad eight times, logging 907

minutes. The 16 year old’s toughest test mayhave come June 16 when he was on the pitchfor the entirety of an MLS Reserve Leaguematch against the Houston Dynamo, scoringa goal in the 31st minute of a 3-2 loss.

Acosta tickled the twine as a midfielder, but the 5-foot-10, 150-pounder is also an adeptdefender.

“We see [Acosta] as a player that may startoff as a defender, but eventually he will makehis way into the midfield,” Hyndman said. “Hebrings a lot of athleticism. He is a two-wayplayer and he seems to be a very courageousplayer.”

Acosta will be available for selection at thestart of the 2013 MLS season.

“It didn’t even hit me until there wasabout 10 seconds left,” said CarleyPhillips, West head coach, who won astate title as a player for the Lady Wolves10 years ago. “I don’t even know how todescribe this ... it’s an amazing feeling, really special.”

The key to the game was the 19thminute.

West controlled the first 15 minutes ofthe Class 5A State Finals from Birkel-bach Field, thanks in part to its physical-ity, but early attempts from senior LoganBeal and junior Casie Ramsier werestymied. Those two would combineforces in the 19th minute with Casiepassing the ball into the box to an openBeal.

“I knew if I could get it to [Beal], shecould score,” Casie said.

Beal had similar aspirations at first.“I was coming in and I was open, but

I had a bad angle,” Beal said. “Then Isaw [junior Brooke Ramsier] and I knewmy girl wouldn’t miss.”

Beal was right as she passed toBrooke, who tickled the twine from 8yards to make it 1-0 with 21:46 to go inthe half.

“It felt like that was the one goal weneeded to really get going,” Brooke said.

It was actually the one goal SevenLakes needed to really get going as theLady Spartans set up a 1 v. 1 within thenext 20 seconds with Rachel Arthurcharging toward West junior keeperClaire Wheatley.

“The first five minutes after a goal arealways the most dangerous,” said Wheat-ley, an all-tournament selection. “I sawher coming at me and I went for theball.”

And much like Wheatley had donethroughout the shootout in the Region IFinals against Flower Mound Marcus, she came off her line and broke up theattempt to keep West’s 1-0 advantage in-tact.

“After that save I was just like, ‘OhClaire, I love you, I love you, I love you,’”

Brooke said. “What a rush of relief.”West junior defender Taylor Jackson

was quick to agree.“That save by Claire was so huge,” she

said. “I think we let our guard down a bitafter the goal, but that snapped it backreally quickly.”

That reflected in the run of play asWest reasserted itself over the final 20minutes of the half with good looks fromseniors Karson Keogh, Natalie Gibson andfreshman Nicole Smith. None of those op-portunities was successful, but the LadyWolves maintained a 1-0 lead at the break.

The first 10 minutes of the second halflooked much like the first with Smith,Beal and sophomore Tori Gates getting at-tempts on frame. Seven Lakes keeperKylie Hambleton was there each timethough, including a save on a 21-yard shotfrom Gates in the 50th minute and a stopon a 38-yard free kick by Keogh in the67th minute. Gates and Keogh were bothall-tournament selections.

Hambleton’s saves seemed to flip theswitch for the Lady Spartans, who thentook control of play for the first prolongedperiod of the day.

“Seven Lakes stepped up and reallythrew a lot at us,” Phillips said, “but ourdefense held strong.”

Page 19: 2012 Plano Labor Day Invitational Soccer Tournament Guide

Jackson, Keogh, juniors Sparky Fis-cher and Midori Rinkliff continuallycurbed Seven Lakes’ counter attacksand prevented any sustained runs by theLady Spartans from getting past the topof the West box.

“The defense really did an amazingjob,” Wheatley said.

Wheatley was pushed into action mul-tiple times over the final 10 minutes, butthe best opportunity either team had inthat span came when Hambleton saveda shot from Gates in the 78th minute.Seven Lakes wouldn’t offensively possessthe ball past midfield again as the clockticked down, albeit somewhat slowerthan usual due to curious official stop-pages during Lady Wolves’ substitutions.

“Yeah, I’ll have to talk to the UILabout that,” Phillips said with a laugh.

That only served to slow the in-evitable as the clock hit zero and Westhad a 1-0 win.

“I was so relieved and excited,” Fis-cher said, “I just started jumping up anddown.”

“Finally we can celebrate,” Casieadded.

For scoring the lone goal of the finalsand being a continual catalyst for Westadvancing the ball up the field, Brooke

was named State Finals MVP and pickedfor the all-tournament team.

“It’s hard to explain,” she said of thehonor and state title. “This is just suchan awesome feeling.”

The victory upped West’s all-timerecord to 10-1 in the state tournamentand represented a record fifth UIL StateGirls Soccer Championship.

“I still can’t even describe what I’mfeeling right now,” Jackson said as tearsbegan to trickle down her face. “This isreally like a dream.”

But as the gold medals around thenecks of the players, coaches and train-ing staff signified, what happened Satur-day and throughout the 2012 season wasvery real.

“We wanted to win state so badly; I’venever wanted anything more,” Wheatleysaid. “We knew we didn’t want our sea-son to end, we wanted to finish it.”

It is widely believed that football is king inthe city of Plano.

And that is almost true as it is actually fut-bol that rules the Plano ISD athletic scene bynearly every measurable component.

“I think a big part of the reason for thecity’s success in soccer is because Plano gotin on the ground floor,” said Dawn Crow,Plano East girls head coach. “The first yearyou could have a varsity soccer team, Planodid, which has a lot to do with the history andtradition this city has established.”

PISD has had a great deal of success in a

variety of sports. But when compared, it’s a case of anything

those other sports can do, soccer can do bet-ter.

“This area has always been a hotbed forsoccer with such talented players,” said Jen-nifer Grubb, former West girls head coachand former Plano player. “And the traditionis so big too; it started when my brothers andI played. You had players getting to or win-ning state and once you are there, you wantto do it again.”

PISD has seven state football champi-onships, all won by Plano Senior.

With the Plano West girls’ 1-0 state finals

triumph over Katy Seven Lakes on Saturday,PISD soccer teams have won 15 state titles inthe past 26 years with the Plano boys, Planogirls and Lady Wolves all having won champi-onships. On the boys side, the Wildcats leadthe state in all classifications with six titles. On the girls side, the Lady Wolves are tied forthe state lead at any classification with fivetitles and the Lady Wildcats are third withfour championships.

If that balance isn’t enough, the otherthree varsity PISD teams (West boys, Eastgirls and East boys) have all been to the Class5A State Tournament.

The Plano boys, Plano girls and West girlshave all been lauded by various outlets astheir national titlists through the years.

The Plano boys and West girls basketballteams snagged state titles within a week ofone another in 2006 while the Plano boys andWest girls won dual championships on thesame day in 2000.

The UIL’s history of awarded state soccertitles goes back to 1983 and the PISD has hadthe best team of the decade in every decadesince then.

The Plano girls were the best of the 1980s

(taking titles in 1986, 1988 and 1989), the Planoboys were tops in the 1990s (capturing crownsin 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1995) and the bestcame from the West girls in the 2000s (winningchampionships in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2007).

With West winning state this season andset to bring the bulk of its team back nextyear, the Lady Wolves may have the insidetrack to being the team of the 2010s.

“I think a big part of it is there is alwaysamazing coaching,” said Logan Beal, Westsenior forward. “We have great coaches nowand there were great coaches before I gothere; they let us be who we are.”

PISD has had strong coaches both short-

and long-term.Bob Weir, who retired with the completion

of the 2012 season, and Diane Davey have ledthe respective boys and girls programs atPlano for the better part of 30 years each. And the only three coaches the West girlshave had (Karen Hunnicutt, Grubb and Car-ley Phillips) have all won state titles with theLady Wolves and at least been to the statetournament as a PISD player.

“It seems like soccer is improving in Planoevery year,” Phillips said. “The players get in-volved at a young age and there seems to begreat soccer at every level coming up throughthe system.”
