F.I.S.H. Area RulesFishing Impoundments and Stream Habitats (F.I.S.H.) sites are leased from private landowners and open to public fishing from March 1 through October 31, or as posted. The F.I.S.H. Program provides all anglers increased opportunies to enjoy fishing on the states streams and small impoundments. Funding for the program is provided through fishing license fees and Sport Fish Restoration Funds. Please observe all rules and regulations, and remember that common sense and ethical behavior will influence the future of the program.

The following guidelines will help maintain a good relationship between landowners and anglers using F.I.S.H. areas: 1. Look for the F.I.S.H. signs (pictured on Page 3) before entering the property. Sites may have been withdrawn from the program. If you do not see signs, do not enter. 2. Obey lease boundaries. Stay within 50 feet of the stream or impoundment shoreline. If the F.I.S.H. property is a stream, fish only on the side of the stream that is posted as an access site. Do not walk or fish on adjacent property. 3. Respect the rights of landowners, as well as others using the area. Treat the land as if it were your own. 4. Take all trash with you when you leave. If someone before you has acted irresponsibly and left trash, please take a moment and pick it up, too. 5. Do not open gates or enter properties with vehicles, unless authorized. Park along the road or in designated parking areas. Leave field-access, drives, and rural roads open so that landowners moving large implements may pass. 6. Avoid stretching fences when crossing them, and use fence stiles where available. 7. Do not attempt to contact cooperating landowners to ask about fishing other portions of their land. Landowners often enroll in the program to reduce contact with anglers.

Regulations governing F.I.S.H. area use: The F.I.S.H. sites are open to public access from March 1 through October 31. (Some are open year-round.) Regions 1 and 3 impounded FISH waters have a creel limit of two channel catfish, a creel limit of two largemouth bass, and an 18-inch minimum length limit on largemouth bass. Otherwise, all Kansas fishing regulations and statewide creel limits apply. Its especially important for anglers using the sites to respect and follow the rules that apply on F.I.S.H. properties. You do not need to contact the landowner for permission on F.I.S.H. waters. The following regulations are in effect on F.I.S.H. waters: The discharge of firearms is prohibited (KAR 115-8-5); Seining is prohibited on all F.I.S.H. waters, and trotlines and setlines are prohibited on impoundments under 1,201 acres in size (KAR 115-8-6); No swimming (KAR 115-8-8); Camping by posted notice only (KAR 115-8-9); No pets, except on a leash (KAR 115-8-10); No horseback riding (KAR 115-8-11); No stocking or release of wildlife, including the dumping of live bait (KAR 115-8-12); Vehicles shall be operated only as authorized (KAR 115-8-13); No fireworks (KAR 115-8This program receives federal financial assistance from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 14); No unauthorized fires (115-8-15); No littering (KAR 115-8-18); No cereal malt 1964, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Age Discrimination Act beverages or alcoholic liquor (KAR 115-8-19); Destructive acts such as digging or of 1975, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the U.S. Department of the Interior and its bureaus prohibit discrimination on destroying signs or vegetation is prohibited (KAR 115-8-20). the bases of race, color, national origin, age, disability or sex (in edu All Kansas boating laws are in effect on F.I.S.H. waters.cational programs). If you believe that you have been discriminated against in any program, activity or facility, or if your desire further information please write to: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Officer for Diversity and Civil Rights Programs, External Programs, 4040 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 130 Arlington, VA 22203 02/11

Due to drought conditions and/or renovation, some properties may be dry or lower than normal. Water quality and vegetation may vary among properties. The best time to fish these properties is spring. During summer and fall, the best way to fish these properties may be from belly boats and inflatable pontoon boats where boating is allowed.

Using the Fishing AtlasThe maps in this atlas pinpoint a variety of public fishing areas, as well as public lands across Kansas. Fishing Impoundment and Stream Habitats (F.I.S.H.) areas are privately-owned ponds or streams the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has leased and opened to public fishing. F.I.S.H. sites are numbered in red on each map. Each map also shows all federal reservoirs, state fishing lakes, river access areas, and community lakes. To find fishing areas near you, consult the legend at the bottom of this page, then locate corresponding color codes on the maps. With this atlas, you can locate just about any type of fishing you desire. The maps on the following page show which counties have federal, state, or community fishing opportunities, as well as those with F.I.S.H. sites. The index in the back of this atlas provides additional information about F.I.S.H. areas and community lakes. Community lakes are impoundments owned by a city or county government. Those community lakes that are managed for public fishing through the departments Community Fisheries Assistance Program (CFAP) are labeled in red letters on the maps and marked either with a blue fish logo or by the actual outline of the lake in blue. State fishing lakes, which are owned and managed by KDWP, are also labeled in red letters. There are no additional fees to fish at state fishing lakes or community lakes in the CFAP program. Community lakes not in the CFAP program are marked with a red octagon symbol. Local governments managing these lakes may charge additional fees. F.I.S.H. sites are numbered in red on the maps and have corresponding numbers in the index, which list the type of water, size of area, and species of fish most likely present. Community lakes are also listed in the index. Most F.I.S.H. areas are open to fishing from March 1 to October 31. The facing page lists rules for all F.I.S.H. areas. Consult the 2011 Fishing Regulations Summary and become familiar with regulations, including creel and length limits. These programs help the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks provide constituents with additional opportunities for outdoor recreation, strengthening our states fishing tradition.

Family Friendly Facility (FFF): While all Community Fisheries Assistance Program (CFAP) lakes are great places to go fishing, some offer extra amenities to support family fishing trips. At these locations, no alcohol is allowed, there are flush toilets, security patrols are conducted regularly, security lighting is in place, and there are easily accessible fishing spots. Any CFAP lake that provides these amenities is termed a Family Friendly Facility and is listed on the map page. Get the family together and give them a try this summer!

Reading a MapIn 1812, the U.S. Government formed the General Land Office to create a standardized system to more accurately define a given U.S. location. The system developed by the General Land Office is called the Public Land Survey system and is used in states west of Ohio. This system divides land into 36-square-mile units called townships. Each township has a township and range designation to define its 36-square-mile area. Starting at the 40th Parallel North Latitude, or the northern boundary of Kansas, townships are numbered moving south. Ranges are the east/west designation, starting at the 6th Principal Meridian, which bisects from north to south through central Kansas (starting between Washington and Republic counties at the Nebraska border). Take for example, the map of Dickinson County pictured below. The township in the upper left corner is T11S, meaning it is the 11th township south of the Kansas/Nebraska border. And it is range R1E, which means it is the first township east of the 6th Principal Meridian. Within each township, of course, there are 36 square miles, or sections. Each section is 640 acres. The sections are numbered starting at the northeast corner and going west. The section in the northwest corner is 6, then the section directly south is 7 and the number then proceeds east and zig zags back and forth to the bottom of the township. On the map below, the sections in the four corners of each township are numbered. So, the section marked on the map below would be Township 12 South (T12S), Range 1 East (R1E), Section 22.

COMMUNITY FISHERIES ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) Fish and Wildlife Division has continued the Community Fisheries Assistance Program (CFAP) for 2011. CFAP leases the fishing rights of approximately 13,000 acres of community lakes statewide. Community cooperators will not charge anglers additional fees to fish from the shore or from a boat, even if permits have been required in the past. State fishing license requirements still apply, and activities other than fishing at these lakes may require additional permits. KDWP hopes removing cost barriers allows more anlers to enjoy these fishing opportunities more often. When you see the CFAP logo at your local community lake, take a friend, head on in, and wet your lines!
