I love Rodeo Season. After all,it's not just any sport where youcan, with just a little seasoning, eat what you ride! With Albertaroasting and boasting the bestbeef in the world, I saddled up andhit the happy trails in search of arecipe that would make a cowpokeproud. Red Seal Chef, SteveThibodeau, ponied up his simpleand savory Beef on a Bun recipethat's so good, you'll wanna pullyour pistols and slap your chaps!

2 – 3lbs Roast (Eye of Round,Sirloin Tip, Inside Round)

1 Onion (diced)4-6 Garlic Cloves (chopped)Steak SpiceOil1 Bottle Bulls Eye BBQ Sauce

(your choice of flavour)Monterey Jack Cheese (or your

favourite cheese)

Coat roast well with oil andsteak spice and cook it in the oven

until medium/well; about 2 hoursat 375 degrees.

Allow roast to cool (for bestresults, cool overnight).

Slice thinly (1/4” to 1/8” slices).Sautee diced onion and garlic

cloves in oil on medium high untiltender, Add sliced beef and the fullbottle of Bulls Eye BBQ sauce. FillBBQ bottle half full with water andadd to mixture to thin the sauce.Simmer the mix-ture on low-medium heat for45 minutes, stir-ring occasionallyto prevent stick-ing.

The goods areready when themeat falls apartand the saucehas re-thickened.

S e r v e o ntoasted Kaiserbuns with garlicbutter and a slice

of Monterey Jack or your favouritecheese.

Strike while the iron's hot andenjoy corn on the cob, coleslaw orpotato side dishes with this saucyslice of Cowboy Country.

Until Lex time, speak your mindbut ride a fast horse!

Giddy-Up & Go-Deo ~ June, July & August 20116

Located in the lap of the majestic Rockies and sit-uated on Calgary’s urban fringe, Turner Valley

captures the essence of small town values – a relaxed atmosphere of-fering a myriad of outdoor recreation and cultural opportunities.Just minutes away from Kananaskis Country, Turner Valley pro-vides visitors an experience to remember.

Quaint coffee shops, dining delights featuring the freshest locallygrown foods, intimate live music performances, local artisans dis-playing their talents - enjoy small town charm, unplugged.

Considered a musical hub in Southern Alberta, Turner Valleyand its neighbour Black Diamond, foster budding stars and well-known rhythm masters. It’s worth the drive to enjoy the outstand-ing talent featured in professional performances delivered by the Be-neath the Arch Concert Society or a weekend afternoon jam sessionoffered in a num-ber of local busi-nesses. Watch forevents through-out the year fea-turing the worksof local artistsand celebrationshonouring thetown’s heritagefeaturing fun forall ages.

Black Diamond takes its name from the abundant localcoal deposits discovered in the late 1800s by a governmentland surveyor, James McMillan. In 1899, Ad McPherson and J.J. Cooper opened acoal mine near the west bank of the Sheep River, just west of the town, and labori-ously shipped an annual 650 tons of high-grade coal by a wagon track to Okotoks. The mine site and crazily tilted coal seams in rocky outcrops are still visible todayfrom the Friendship Trail, a gentle three kilometer paved pedestrian trail linkingBlack Diamond and Turner Valley.

Black Diamond is located in the majestic foothills of Alberta's Rocky Mountainson the banks of the Sheep River. Just a 30 minute drive southwest of Calgary, thetown is a gateway to the ranchlands along the Cowboy Trail and the entrance toKananaskis Country. A spectacular setting, friendly rural atmosphere, fascinating

history and a thriving artistic community are just afew of the qualities that give the town its unique ap-peal.

Beautifully situated on Highway 22, also known asthe Cowboy Trail, the town actively promotes the com-munity's historic character. Restoration of the down-town was completed in 2004 through the Alberta MainStreet Programme, which encourages the preservationof local history through the enhancement of originalBoomtown storefronts.

Black Diamond offers a wide range of recreation fa-cilities and activities to appeal to every age group. In-door and outdoor skating rinks, campground, footballand soccer fields, a curling rink, playgrounds and vari-ous activity groups provide year round fun.

Black Diamond's economy is fueled by various in-dustries and related services, primarily farming andranching, oil and gas, residential housing, tourismand service-based industry.

Today, Black Diamond prospers through develop-ment activity in Calgary's urban fringe, tourism alongthe Cowboy Trail and growth from within by an ener-getic local population and business community.

PriddisPriddis WHATEVER THE OCCASION...WHATEVER THE OCCASION...

The Hamlet of Priddis is locateda short 15 minute drive southwestof Calgary just off Highway 22. Inaddition to the general store andgas station, there is a Post Office,a restaurant and several specialtyshops.

This, off-the-beaten-track, ham-let was named after Charles T.Priddis, an early homesteader inthe area. He was born in Englandin 1844 and settled in this area in

his mid-fifties after living in Ontario, Texas and Calgary. Travelers returning toCalgary would leave mail at his shack for local homesteaders. When the timecame to put up a post office and regular mail service was requested, the authori-ties used the Priddis name for the district and Charles was the postmaster. Hehelped start the Priddis School by donating land for the building. He donated theacre north of the school yard to the Priddis Farmers and Ranchers Hall and a par-cel across the street for St. James AnglicanChurch. The 45 seat, wooden church was built in1904 and consecrated in 1906.

Always a beehive of activity, Priddis sports a bas-ketball court, tennis courts and a hockeyrink/skateboard area. The Priddis Community Hall, also built in the early 1900s is right beside FishCreek where a playground, picnic tables and a newgazebo on the front lawn can be enjoyed by visitors.Numerous area groups still use the Hall on a regu-lar basis: First Priddis Beavers/Cubs and Scout's,Foothills Continuing Education Program, Men'sNon-denominational Breakfast, Priddis EarlyLearning & Preschool Program, Flying NeedlesQuilting Guild, Priddis Panthers HockeyAssociation, Priddis Pony Club, Priddis VolunteerFire Department and the Westoe Women'sInstitute.

Vacations are great, thewhole family is in on the fun andin many cases so are the familypets. Whether it's a day trip or aweek away in the car, when youare travelling with animals justlike children you must be pre-pared. Keep in mind their com-fort and needs as well as re-quirements for overnight stays, border crossings and animal re-strictions. If you're doing abeach holiday check on regula-tions as many will not allowdogs or they are confined to onearea. Call ahead to avoid nastysurprises.

Always carry the animal'shealth records, have all shots upto date, if available their pedi-gree papers, water and foodbowls and stress relieving itemssuch as their blanket or familiartoys. When booking a facility besure they are animal friendly.Find out if there are insects inthe area that may compromisethe health of your pet, such asdeer ticks, then discuss protec-tion with your veterinarian.

Hopefully your pet is accus-tomed to car drives, if not pre-pare them in advance by taking

short drives at moderate speeds.Cats should be kept in a carriersecured with a seat belt, as wellas small to medium sized dogsunless they are very comfortablein a car and calm during thetrip. However a carrier lends pro-tection to the animal in theevent of an accident and wouldbe a preferred method of travel.

If the animal does getstressed, or if your dog is bark-ing at other passing vehicles, cover the carrier or the windowwith a light blanket. Makeplenty of stops for watering andexercise.

Although it's fun to watch adog stick his head out the win-dow and face into the wind thishabit can cause harm, such aseye damage. A window shouldbe open for air circulation, butnot enough that the dog can gethis whole head out, just suffi-cient that he can sniff the breezeand have fresh air.

If your pet suffers car sick-ness, then it's best to leave themat a care facility or at home witha pet sitter where they would bemore comfortable. But, if youmust take them with you, before

leaving take them out to exer-cise, feed them a small meal andkeep food and water during thetrip to a minimum.

If you pet is not comfortablewith strangers, for their own pro-tection as well as other peopleand animals, leash them andhave them under your control atall times. This is particularly im-portant if you are in an area farfrom home, or with lots ofcrowds. If you must leash a cat,use a body harness. Someoneasked about taking an animalalong for a fireworks display andI can't think of anything thatwould upset an animal morethan huge bangs in the sky andthe smell of fire; LEAVE THEMHOME or don't attend the event.

Be aware of the temperatureand protect the animal appro-priately, use shades on windowsso that they aren't in direct sunor heat in the summer and main-tain a moderate heat in the win-ter.

In all cases, common senseshould be used when travelling, then the vacation will be plea-surable for everyone, includingthe family pet.

Household HintsHousehold HintsBy RosemaryCat and Dog TripsCat and Dog Trips

When you hear the title“The Great One,” you imme-diately think of WayneGretzky and hockey. Butwould you ever associateWayne Gretzky with wine? Many would be surprisedto know that the No. 99does not just label ahockey jersey but also anamazing line of wines.

Our featured wine is the2008 Merlot from WayneGretzky Estates in the Niag-ara Peninsula. This vin-tage showcases a fruit-forward style featuring aro-mas of cherry and black-berry. A well rounded pal-ate with medium tanninsaccentuates the ripe berryfruit, with oak spice andmocha in the finish.

It is aged in Americanoak barrels for an averageof 8 months and has a alco-hol content of 12.5%. ThisMerlot pairs best with redmeat dishes, as well aschili, stew, pork tender-

loin, souvlaki and mild cur-ries. For dessert, enjoy italongside chocolate fon-due.

Priced under $20, I con-sider this Merlot “TheGreat One” of wines fromthe Niagara region. A por-tion of proceeds fromWayne Gretzky wines isdonated to the WayneGretzky Foundat ion, which helps provide lessfortunate youth withopportunities to enjoy thesport of hockey.

For upcomingsales and tast-ings of this winej o i n u s a twww.valleyliquor.ca or email [email protected] for moreinformation onthis or otherWayne Gretzkywines.

NANTON“Where History Lives”

Nanton celebrates history through the Nanton Lancaster Air Museum, the

Antique and Art Walk, its preservation of the Grain Elevators and the tourist

information centre housed in the historical MacEwan School House located on

Highway #2 North near historic Main Street. The town celebrated its 100th

Anniversary in 2003.

Nanton Grain ElevatorsThe Canadian Grain Elevator Discover Centre owns and maintains the town's

few remaining elevators located one block east of northbound Highway #2.

A society formed in 2001, purchased the lands from CPR, bought the elevators

and set to work cleaning, repairing and repainting the sentinels supported

through fundraising efforts. The Nanton elevators are the only wooden eleva-

tors left along Highway #2 south of Calgary. Events and tour informationfound at: www.nantonelevators.com
