After Cleburnes 6-4 run in2009, the Yellow Jackets had highhopes entering 2010

Those high hopes were dashedas Cleburne struggled to a 1-9 re-

cord in its first season of play inDistrict 7-4AThe secondary was suspect and

routinely exploited for big plays bymore athletic teams such as DallasMadison, Everman and MansfieldSummit

Cleburnes lone victory in 2010came over Joshua, 56-28 TheOwls ended up 0-10

A silver lining was the emer-gence of Quade Coward as the

quarterback of Cleburnes futureAs a sophomore, he split playingtime with junior Chaston Cuffee inthe backfield His accuracy anddecision-making along with hismobility have made him the starterfor Cleburne in 2011 as it tries tomove forward from last years dis-appointment

Head Coach Phil Young said histeam is further along this year aftertwo scrimmages instead of one andan extra week of practice

Were definitely further along just because weve had that extraweek with pads, Young saidWere also a little more dinged upbecause of it

Cleburne returns eight starters, four on each side of the ball Se-nior receiver Cooper Walls, wholed 7-4A last year in receptions, re-turns along with tight end Pete

Black, a three-year lettermanIn the backfield, Coward hasseveral options including seniorPatrick Morgan, Zach Haler andjunior Khalil Hall

Hall is the speediest of thethreeOn defense, Cuffee is thesafet and And Anderson returns

for his senior season as an outsidelinebacker Connor Martyniuk, asenior, will play inside linebackeralong with Brock Sanders Both areundersized at around 170 pounds

On the defensive line is whereCleburnes strength may lie ChazArmistead, Clayton McLaurin (aRio Vista move-in), German Her-nandez, Eduardo Cassio and Aaron

Perez are all available for duty inthe trenches James Thornburg re-turns at the linebacker slot andTanner Marchel is back on the lineafter missing last season with a leginjury

Cleburne will operate out of amultiple-front look on both offense

and defense The Jackets usuallygo with a 4-3 defensive front, butthey were exploited in the second-ary last year With Cuffee playingpredominantly in the safety posi-tion this season, Young said thehope is he can prevent big playsfrom happening

On offense, Cleburne has been amore run-centered team lately, but

with the departure of speedy run-ning back LJ Holmes, a first-teamall-district selection last year, theJackets may be forced to rely moreon the passing game until the run-ning backs develop

Young said he feels good aboutthe extra practice Cleburne has got-

ten this yearWere good when we stick to

our assignments, he said Whenwe start to peak and look around onthe offensive line, were not asgood

Andy [Anderson] has turnedinto a fantastic football playerHes improved the most of anyoneand hes going to be fantastic this

yearYoung mentioned Black andWalls will be key again for Cle-burne

Those guys caught the major-ity of our balls last year, he saidThey can catch the ball in a lot ofdifferent situations Theyve both

got a lot of speed and are very fastin their positions They might bethe fastest at their positions in thedistrict

Walls might be the most danger-ous offensive weapon Cleburnepossesses, Young said

I think his expectations are tocatch every ball that comes hisway, he said Theyll put their

best guy on him every game Get-ting off the line, hell have to showup every game and understand hesgoing to get the best kid and prob-ably be double-teamed

Hes a very unselfish kid andthats his best attribute along withbeing very athletic

Cleburne Offensive Coordina-tor Tommy Webb said theresplenty to be excited about con-cerning the 2011 edition of theYellow Jacket o ffense

This is as good a group of

skill kids weve had since wevebeen here, Webb said Thisyears senior class is a differentgroup and they incorporate ev-erything

Were way ahead of wherewe were this time last year

Cleburne had an extra scrim-mage in the preseason because ofspring football drills The Jack-ets scrimmaged Grapevine athome on Aug 13 and Arlington

Heights at home on Aug 19Returning on offense are se-

nior receiver Cooper Walls, wholed District 7-4A in receptionslast year, along with both Cle-burne quarterbacks in juniorQuade Coward and senior Chas-ton Cuffee

Coward will start this yearwith Cuffee as the backup Webbsaid Cuffee, a University of Mis-souri commit, will play more onthe defensive end, but added hesthe kind of dynamic athlete whocan be used anywhere on thefield and on both sides of theball

Also returning are senior run-ning back Patrick Morgan andsenior tight end Pete Black

Ive got some guys on theoffensive line whove gottensome experience last year,

Webb said Cooper and Pete arethe only true returning startersfrom last year, but when you fi-nally have a system the kids havegone through, I feel comfortablewith this team

    Webb said the Jackets will

sport a lot of new faces, includ-ing the shifty junior Khalil Hallat running back along with AndyAnderson, who impressed in theGrapevine scrimmage

Hes going to make an im-pact, Webb said of AndersonHes a starter on defense andwe know hes going to be a bigimpact player on offense

Other new faces include ZackHaler at running back and seniorConnor Martyniuk ClaytonMcLauren is a senior move-in

from Rio Vista and Webb said hewill fill in nicelyPatrick has trimmed down

and come in in really goodshape, Webb added Hes got asenior moxi about him and hehasnt been going down easyKameron Pickett is a sophomore, and hell see some snaps at run-ning back

Webb said Coward has pro-gressed a lot during the summer

after visiting a lot of throwingcamps He said quarterbackcoach Ky Kelm has also helpedwith his progression

Were going to have tospread it out a lot more, he saidQuade took a lot of reps lastyear and during the last fivegames of the season we wereswitching him in and out On dayfive of practice this year, he wasstill humming balls in there

Hes a big, fast kid with a lotof passion for the game and hewants to do well We want him tobe more of a leader in the hud-dle, but that will come with timeOverall, he has the whole pack-age and a very strong arm Hisaccuracy is starting to come on

On the line, Cleburne willplay senior Clayton Harris at lefttackle Harris has played the po-sition two of the last three years

Senior guards Alec Swisherand Philip Vasquez will also re-turn for the Jackets and juniorTori Endricht and sophomoreHunter Hicks will battle for thestarting center spot

    cooper walls - pete Black

    By Zack cunningham

    [email protected]

Two seniors, CooperWalls and Pete Black, are go-ing to be two of junior quar-terback Quade Cowards big-gest weapons on the field

The two players are dif-ferent in terms of demeanor

Pete talks A lot But the talk-ing he does on the footballfield, whether hes injured orrunning across the middle, isa benefit to his team

Cooper is more with-drawn Not shy, but he pos-sesses a confidence in his tal-ent and athletic abilities thatspeaks for itself

Walls was a stud quarter-back in middle school, but

didnt play varsity footballuntil last year

His goal, he said, waspretty simple

I was just trying not toget killed, he said I waspretty clueless

Walls played wide re-ceiver for the Yellow Jacketsand was a target of bothCoward and Chaston Cuffee

Under the tutelage of for-mer Jacket Logan Nunn,Walls said he was able tolearn the basics of being awideout

I was just trying to makemyself a part of the team, hesaid I expected to be goodbut I didnt think Id have theseason I had Logan Nunnwas always there showing methe basics

Coach [Brent] Burtonhelped to teach me routes be-cause I was pretty clueless

It all worked out prettywell for Walls as he estab-lished himself as a legitimatedeep threat with his speed

    and hands He finished as

District 7-4As leading re-ceiverTowards the end of the

season, I felt great, he saidThis year, my confidence isa lot higher My goals are tomake myself a better receiver

and to make those around me

betterHell have to deal with thebullseye thats been placedon his back That happenswhen you have a breakoutyear

    Ive talked about that a

    lot with my coaches, he

said Im going to need tolearn how to get off blocksIm going to be jammed andfacing double-teams Every-one is going to know who Iam I need to find a way toget open and make plays

Walls said he feels he can

run with the best 7-4A has toofferI feel like I can run with

the Evermans out there, hesaid But Ive also got to beable to outsmart them

    Black said he played

backup quarterback behindWalls in middle school, butwas moved to the tight endspot his sophomore year

His talkative demeanorand fearlessness serve himwell, he said

I hope Im one of themore vocal seniors, he said, laughing I guess I call my-

self a leader I do talk a lotA lot of the talking is donein the form of encouragementand advice to the youngerJackets, Black said He paysit forward after being men-tored by former Jacket BubbaOakes during his sophomoreseason

He was really good aboutshowing me how to makesure I did everything right as

a tight end, he said I washis backup but last year wasreally the signature yearwhen I had my starting posi-tion I never really came offthe field

Bubba would come backand tell me I was doing thingsthe right way I catch myselfall the time telling that to thesophomores and being morelike a coach

Black, who also plays bas-ketball, said football is moreof his feature spot Alongwith Walls, he said he consid-ers the two a great one-twopunch for any quarterback

Im one of those kidswho is never going to bescared of anything, and if Iam then Im not going to tellyou, he said I think Im a

pretty good threat across themiddle and with Cooperplaying the deep ball, thats apretty good threat

Head coach Phil Youngsaid the two will catch themajority of our balls

Last year, Cleburnes de-fense was a big reason theYellow Jackets struggled to a1-9 record

The unit surrendered morethan 450 points and allowed50 or more points three dif-ferent occasions (to Ever-man, Dallas Madison andCrowley)

With returning talent onthe line and in the secondary, along with new co-defensivecoordinators Ross Taylor andCurtis James, Cleburne hasreason to hope the holes fromlast year are patched

Or they soon will beWere a multiple-front

defense, James said Welike to give ourselves someoptions from week to week

We want to give the peoplewere going to play a coupleof different looks

The main weakness rightnow is guys seeing the termi-nology for the first time andtrying to get it down

The most notable returneron the defensive unit is se-nior Chaston Cuffee, a Uni-versity of Missouri commitand one of the fastest playerson the team

Hes our center fielder,Taylor said His job is tomake sure hes always thedeepest man on the field andthat were not going to giveup the big play

Cuffee has been hurt offand on through the preseasonand saw limited action inCleburnes two scrimmages

He played six plays duringthe Jackets scrimmageagainst Arlington Heights

James said Cleburnesstrength will be up front

Theyre all juniors andseniors up there, he said

Thats probably the strengthof our defense

That front is composed ofChaz Armistead, Jarvis

Thompson, Aaron Perez andRio Vista move-in ClaytonMcLaurin All are multi-yearlettermen

Senior Connor Martyniukwill help out as an insidelinebacker and sophomore

Kameron Pickett will alsoplay in the secondary, Jamessaid

    Andy Anderson and

Brock Sanders are two morelinebackers for Cleburne An-derson played linebacker lastyear and will also see time atrunning back this season

Andy has a really toughrole, he said Those guys

have to know when to be onthe edge and when their timeis to bounce and to cover thepass

They need to read thekey and get to where they be-long One bounce or a mo-ment of hesitation is the dif-ference sometimes between a

For Cleburne junior quarterbackQuade Coward, the 2011 season isall about opportunity

The tall, lanky gunslinger sawshared action with Chaston Cuffeeduring last seasons 1-9 campaignand played more minutes as theseason progressed

By the end of the season, Cuffeeand Coward were switching out ev-ery series

This year, the starting job be-longs to Coward Cuffee is thebackup and will focus on being adefensive specialist

Coward showed promise in hisappearances last year and possessesboth the mobility and arm strengththat could be the key to getting Cle-burne on the right track offensively

Coward said he has to remaineven-keel about the situation

    Its pretty exciting, he said

Youve got to come out there andbe a leader Youve got the rest ofthe team looking up to you becauseyoure the big guy

Coward plays three sports atCleburne High School but admitsfootball is his favorite

Over the summer, he attendedseveral throwing camps and hasworked hard with quarterbackcoach Ky Kelm from the beginning

of this summers practicesHe also put in a lot of time in thespring

He manages the game verywell, said Head Coach Phil YoungHes very strong with a lot of ath-letic ability Hes a smart, toughfootball player

Coward will have plenty ofweapons to work with this season, and a lot of them will be familiarfaces from last year

The districts leading receiver inCooper Walls returns as a senior, along with running backs PatrickMorgan and Zach Haler Scott Bacais also an option

You have to stay even-keel,Coward said You have to keep

your head on straight and keepthings moving no matter what

Two years ago, Coward wasdominant on Cleburnes freshmanblack team It was a common sightto see Coward running for long

gains against an outmatched defen-sive unitHe said hes improved vastly

since those daysI feel like my mechanics have

completely changed since I was afreshman, he said The skill level

of the varsity competition, thatswhat you have to make yourchanges based on I feel like Iveadvanced

Coward did experience a fewlearning hiccups while facing that

varsity speed for the first time in2010He recalls one instance against

eventual 7-4A champion EvermanThere was one play where all

of my receivers were covered, hesaid One of their guys was flying

at me so I just chunked the ball andgot hit It was their left defensiveend, but they all looked huge

It happened a few times, actu-ally

What will the junior do this year

with an Owl, an Elk or a Bulldogbearing down fast?SimpleIll basically roll out of it and

stay focused in the pocket, Cow-ard said

    Because of his height and

awareness, Coward is able to scanthe defense for blitzes better thanhis predecessors

My vision is my biggeststrength, he said Im good atseeing what the defense is doing

Coward said he had a feelingafter his freshman year that hecould compete for a varsity posi-tion as a sophomore

I knew Id be able to fight for

Junior to lead Swarm into battle in 2011QuaDe cowarD

Last year, I didnt start out as the quarterback, butknowing that Im the No 1 guy, I know Ive got to be theleader and I have guys looking up to me

Being the starting quarterback will mean Coward has a

bigger bullseye on his back than ever beforeThat means rivals like Joshua and Burleson will be tar-

they are small they will be effectiveTheyre both quick guys, Taylor said Weve got to cover

Brock Sanders and Zach Haler will see time at the linebackerposition James said Haler may be closer to 180 pounds

Taylor added Cleburne has a heavier and a lighter set of de-fensive linemen it can rotate in and out

Weve got a mixture of both with McLaurin and Perez, he

said They can start on both sides of the ball McLaurin runswell for a big kid Hes probably the second-biggest linemanweve got at 245 pounds

Weve also got Eduardo Cassio for size and Trenton Homesand Tory Endtricht Those guys are our light defensive line-men

Phil Young is entering his fifthyear at the helm of the Yellow Jack-ets

Its safe to assume that he, as aformer Cleburne High School grad-uate, knows which player representsYellow Jacket pride

When asked what senior line-backer and running back Andy An-derson represents, Young didnt hes-itate with his answer

He loves the Jackets, Youngsaid He has a desire inside him tosee us do well and succeed Hes de-veloped into a quiet leader but heloves his teammates and his team

Anderson played outside line-backer for the Jackets last year in hisfirst year on the varsity In 2009,Anderson was the quarterback of theJV team and was no stranger tomaking big plays

When asked to move to the de-fensive side his junior year, Ander-son said he didnt hesitate with hisresponse

I think I like playing defensebetter because I love to be able todefend well and to be tacklingguys, he said I love chasing peo-

ple downThe Jackets found themselves inchase mode a lot last year With An-derson returning to the secondaryalong with several other speedy de-fensive backs, the hope for Cleburneis he wont have to try to catch play-ers from behind

I feel like Ive progressed a lot,he said When youre younger, thegame feels fast But when youre asenior, something clicks and things

start slowing down a lotYou start seeing things better

and you get a feel for whats goingon

Young agrees with Andersonsassertion that hes progressed

    Hes probably improved more

than anyone on our team, he saidHes going to be a fantastic playerfor us this year Hes going to playrunning back for us

Playing both sides of the fieldwas something Anderson said hewas willing to do

I thought it was awesome whenthey told me I could be the runningback, he said Its exciting andlike a dream to be able to play on the

varsity and startAnderson said there are several

keys for his success this seasonIm the main guy when it comes

to the outside containment, he saidI need to remember to stay disci-plined and do what Im supposed todo in practice

If you do that every game andevery play and remember to knowyour keys and get to the ball, then

youre doing what youre supposedto be doing

Despite the praises of his headcoach, Anderson said he isnt com-

pletely satisfied with the effort hesgiven the last two years

He may be the only oneIve done all right, he said

But not the best that I can, butmaybe thats a good thing

Id like to see more sacrifice

from myself in any way I can for usto get the wins as a team that wewant Ill do whatever I can

That, Young said, is what exem-

plifies being a model Cleburne Yel-low Jacket

I do love the team and I love theatmosphere and I love Cleburne,Anderson said I love being a Yel-low Jacket and thats all the motiva-tion I need
