The princess and the PeaOnce upon a time there was a Prince; he wanted to get himself a princess, but she had to be a real

princess. So he travelled all over the world to find one, but in every case something was the matter. There was lots of Princessess, but he could never quite make out whether they were real or not. So he came back home feeling very unhappy.

One evening a terrible storm came. Lightning flashed, thunder rolled and the rain poured down in torrents-it was simply awful! Suddenly there was a knock at the city gate and the old King went out to answer it.

There was a Princess standing outside, but what a sight the rain and the bad weather had made of her ! The water streamed down her hair and her clothes, and yet she said she was a real Princess.

“ It won’t take a long to find that out,” thought the old queen. Without saying anything, she went into the bed chamber, took off all the bedclothes, and placed one pea on the bottom boards of the bed. Then, she took twenty mattressess and put them on top of the pea and after that she put twenty feather pillow on top of the mattressess.

That was where the Princess was to spend the night. In the morning they asked her how she had slept.”Oh, dreadfully” said the princess. I hardly slept a wink all night. Whatever could have been in the bed? I was lying on something so hard that I’m black and blue all over.”

Text 5 UN: Indonesia records 117th human case of Bird flu

Geneva ( AP ) : Indonesia has recorded another human case of the H5N1 strain of bird flu, raising its world-leading total to 117 cases, according to the World Health Organization.

The agency said Friday night that the Indonesian Health Ministry has reported that a 16 year old girl from West Java Province has been hospitalized since January 4 with symptoms of the disease. It said the strain had been confirmed as H5N1.

Of the total number of human cases in Indonesia, 94 have been fatal. WHO says that globally 349 people have been infected with H5N1 since the 2003 outbreak of the disease. Of those, 216 have died.

After Indonesia the country with the next highest number of cases is Vietnam with 101, followed by Egypt with 43, according to the UN health agency.

TEXT 6.Global warming is the increase in the average measured temperature of the earth’s near surface air

and oceans. Climate model projections summarized by the IPCC indicate that average global surface temperature will likely rise a further 1.1 to 6.4 C during the twenty -first century. Are there intelligent beings on other planets in our solar system ? Most scientists don’t think so. If there are, the only likely place is Mars.

It is fun to imagine our kind of human on other worlds, but they would probably look so different we might not recognize them as people at all. Living things have a wonderful way of adapting themselves to conditions around them in order to stay alive. Plants grow in the Arctic. Some simple animals can survive being boiled or frozen. Creatures live in the blackest of the sea under thousands of tons of pressure.

We can’t really say that our kind of air is the only kind of living things could breathe, or that they must have water or a certain climate. Creatures that breathed other gases or lived in temperatures that would kill earthmen, however, certainly, wouldn’t look like us.

An international team of scientists says it has found a “ lost world “ in Indonesian jungle that is the home to dozens of new animals and plants species. “ It is as close to the Garden of Eden as you are going to find on earth , “ said Bruce Beehler, co-leader of the group.

The group of Indonesian, American and Australian researchers trekked through an area in the mist -

shrouded Foja Mountain north-western Papua. After being dropped off by helicopter, the researchers spent nearly a month in the area, detailing the wildlife and plantlife from the lower hills to near the summit of the Foja range, which reaches more than 2000 m in elevation.

The team found four new species of butterflies, twenty new species of frogs and a whole series of remarkable plants including five new palms and a giant rhododendron flower. The survey also found a honey-eater bird that was previously unknown to science and the first new bird species discovered on the island of New Guinea since 1939. They also found the breeding ground of a ‘lost ‘ paradise. The six-wired bird of paradise was first seen in the late 19th century but hadn’t been found again since. The photographs of the golden fronted bower bird displaying its plunge. Besides, the team also recorded a golden mantled tree kangaroo, whichwas not known to be in this area and is near extinction in other areas. “ It is beautiful, untouched, unpolpulated forest, there is no evidence of human impact or presence, “ said Dr. Beehler.

Many people say that examinations should be abolished because they are not the best measure of students’ capabilities. These people believe that students can study on their own and do better without the nagging worry and pressure exerted by examinations.
