Discovering Life After FiftySENIOR FAIR5O+S E V E N T H A N N U A L

The Daily Journal’s annual event, Senior Fair—Discovering Life After Fifty, will be

held at the Hilton Garden Inn and RiverStone Conference Center this Tuesday, May

11, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This event is free (a small charge for lunch if you like),

and includes exhibits, educational seminars and demonstrations, entertainment, and

prizes. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

This will be our 7th Annual Senior Fair. When we launched this event in 2004, I did

not qualify for “Discovering Life After Fifty”. Now, however, I do. Mmmm. Fifty is

senior? How can that be? I don’t feel senior. I don’t think I act senior. After all, I am

still very active. I work full time. I hunt. I fish. I do my own home and car repairs. I

play with the kids (ok, the grandkids). And, both of my parents are still alive and well.

How can I be called a “senior”?

The fact is that “senior” does not mean what it did in the past. And, while today’s

seniors live a very active lifestyle, we still should be planning now for the future. What

are our options for health care providers, including audiologists, pain management,

chiropractors, pharmacies, fitness centers, and hospitals. What about hospice and

funeral planning?

Until I need these services, I want to know how to take care of my parents, plan for

retirement, understand recent health care legislation, and enjoy myself for many years

to come.

On Tuesday, more than 30 local businesses will be represented at The Daily Journal’s

7th Annual Senior Fair. They will be there to help seniors like me plan for the better

half of our lives. I hope to see you there.

Medicare Information

TAKE ACTION – MEDICAREPresented by Brent Wright, C.E.O.OAK Orthopedics

Location: Iroquois RoomTime: 9:30 a.m. – 9:50 a.m.

For years, we have been hearing the warnings about the financial health ofthe Medicare system, but now the outlook is in crisis mode. The funds that are paidto hospitals and physicians have deteriorated significantly and will continue to do soas baby boomers retire and begin using Medicare.

Currently, there is a looming threat of a 21 percent cut for seniors on Medicare PartB and the doctors who care for them. This action can result is offices closing, person-nel layoffs, and limited health care access to seniors.

The core problem is how Medicare’s physician payment formula is calculated. In thisseminar, Brent Wright of OAK Orthopedics in Kankakee will focus on this problemand share with you the issues that physicians are facing.

Then, he wants you to join him in taking action by contacting your congressionalleaders to request a permanent fix for Medicare funding. For your convenience, wehave provided contact information for the U.S. Senators and Representatives whoserve our area. You can also log onto www.congress.com to find contact informationfor other members of Congress.

DANCING WITH THE QUADRILLESLocation: Sugar Creek and Iroquois RoomTime: 2:15 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.

Year after year, the Quadrille Dance Club continues to dazzle us with theirexhilarating ballroom steps and this year is no exception.

The dance club of nearly 70 years will demonstrate various ballroom dancesteps as the closing act of the Seventh Annual Senior Fair.

Why do we dance? The answer to this frequently asked question is simple.Today, people dance for one reason, enjoyment. Social dancing is one of themost important male-female interactions in our society. Its good exercise, good fun and something you can do all of your life. This is particularlyimportant for our seniors. Ballroom dancing provides moderate exercise,an important social outlet and a way of keeping up with the world.

As long as you can walk, you can dance!

Gerry and Judy Kilbride serve as officers of Quadrille Dance Club.
