on the North American continent enjoy such extraor-dinary opportunities as does Holy Blossom Temple. To learn from and to take the measure of the leading Jewish !gures of the day: Shlomo Riskin, Daniel Gordis, Peter Beinart and Arthur Green (to say nothing of Einat Wilf of this past month); it’s hard to !nd more compelling people to join us at this, or at any moment.

And, important !gures of the moment, they are. Each speaks about and represents perhaps the most signi!-cant matters of concern vis-à-vis Israel and the Jews. I promise you: each event, each of these teachers, is more than worthwhile for you to carve out the time to join us here at the synagogue.

First, on Tue. Oct. 12, 2010, at 8 p.m., Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, Chief Rabbi of Efrat, will address: “Will Our Children and Grandchildren Be

Jewish?” Rabbi Riskin is perhaps the leading rabbi of our time and is a great bridge builder: between Israel and the Diaspora; between the traditional and liberal worlds; between the religious and secular camps in Israel; between Jews and Arabs in Israel. Rabbi Riskin is dynamic, humorous, warm and wise. When he speaks, one listens — and learns.

Last spring, former editor of the New Republic, Peter Beinart, penned a controversial article in the New York Review of Books. Criticizing both Israeli police and Diaspora Jewish leadership, Beinart set o% an animated debate. No one is better than Rabbi Daniel Gordis to join the debate with Beinart. On "ur. Oct. 28, 2010, at 8 p.m., they will do just that at Holy Blossom. “Zion: Home or Harm to the Jews?” will explore Beinart’s thesis that the North American Jewish leadership is getting things wrong when it comes to support for the State of Israel. Please note: this debate will have reper-cussions well beyond our synagogue and no doubt will be seen by many.

And, over the Shabbat of Nov. 12 and 13, 2010, it will be our honour

to host Rabbi and Professor Arthur Green, as our Scholar-in-Residence. A brilliant teacher of Judaism, and an expert on Chassidism and Mysticism in particular, Arthur Green has been a tremendously popular teacher for some decades now. "is is an opportunity to study in-depth with one of the leading teachers of our time.

Our opportunity, indeed our privi-lege, to learn from these as well as so many other teachers over the years is possible simply because of the gener-osity, passion and modesty of our members, Gerald Schwartz and Heather Reisman. I know I say it with some frequency, but it is only because it is so deserved: Gerry and Heather do so much for Holy Blossom Temple and beyond, and we are indeed fortunate for their support — always o%ered thought-fully and with the unique capability to make our synagogue community the best it can possibly be.For more information on these speakers and lectures, please see page 5 or visit our website at www.holyblossom.org/schwartz_reisman_centre.htm

is on its way to Senior School: we are removing our students from the building! Getting away from the city for a Shabbat retreat is amazing for the students and the faculty. Retreats are one of the most signi!cant experiences that any school system can a%ord its students. Taking students away from their home base to a retreat centre allows for much to be accomplished, most especially friend-ship, fun and learning.

Our Grade 7 pre-B’nei Mitzvah students come together each fall with eager anticipation. "ey are excited about the coming year, including the opportunities that the year brings, the responsibilities that the year o%ers and so much more.

"e value that comes from one retreat weekend is immeasurable. Our Grade 7 retreat brings students together for study, prayer, community building and, of course, fun. Combined, these elements make for the perfect formula for a retreat. Teachers, students and rabbis gather together in the woods for a beautiful Shabbat. Praying in a relaxed atmosphere with guitar in hand, giving the students the opportunity to lead prayer, reading Torah and participating in discussions are all part of the retreat experience.

Close ties made through the junior high and high school years are o#en the foundation for adult friendships. Our retreat allows for greater commu-nity building — and with it, lasting friendships. Additionally, exploring the outdoors through orienteering, scav-enger hunts and bird watching pres-ents students with opportunities not

normally found within our four walls — ones that cannot be matched in any other setting.

"is year, not only are our Grade 7 students ‘retreating,’ but our Grade 8 and 9 students are going away for a Shabbat. "is is the !rst time we have done this for many years and we look forward to an intensive weekend together. "is year, with Israel as a theme, we will bring our Israeli shin-shinim together with our students for an important and informative conver-sation. Our students are challenged in their daytime schools and through the media regarding current events in Israel. We hope to give them a greater under-standing of the issue.

I look forward to spending time away from home in a beautiful, relaxed atmo-sphere, where all of the students and sta% will have a chance to get to know one another just a little better.

, Holy Blossom Temple welcomed its !rst Out of the Cold guests. Holy Blossom was the !rst Jewish congregation in the Out of the Cold coalition. Our Out of the Cold program, in conjunction with many other social action programs at Holy Blossom Temple, provides our congregants with a community framework for tikkun olam, the obligation of Jews to help ‘repair the world.’ Each season, we welcome more than 400 volunteers from the congregation and the community at

large. On a weekly basis, we serve dinner to more than 110 people and provide overnight accommodation to 45 of our guests. We o%er:

• a safe, comfortable and quiet environment

• a mattress, blanket and overnight shelter

• a wholesome hot dinner and breakfast• a lunch bag with sandwiches, fruit and

dessert• the services of an on-site nurse for

basic medical attention• entertainment, games and an art class• a sense of welcome, security and

dignity

Our program runs every "ursday night from November to the end of March.

• Make a "nancial contribution — Our program is self-funding, relying entirely on donations in cash and in kind, and does not draw upon the Temple’s budget. Funds are needed to keep the program running. If you would like to make a !nancial contribution to the Out of the Cold program, please call the Foundation o$ce (ext. 265), at the Temple.

• Donate clothing and supplies — If you have access to any of the following items, new or used, we

will focus on Jerusalem. "e theme is “Whose City: Jerusalem through the Eyes of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.” We will learn about the attachment of these three religions to Jerusalem and then apply that as context to the key issues facing Jerusalem today.

Few people who spend time in Jerusalem leave unmoved.

Jerusalem is beautiful. "e sight of ubiquitous white limestone, which shines bright during the day and turns a so# gold as the sun sets. "e walls of the Old City, bold during the day but even more so when illuminated at night. "e smells of Jerusalem — from fragrant local plants, to the bakeries and falafel stands on Ja%a Road, and the abundant spices in Mahane Yehuda market. Wandering in Jerusalem is a fascinating experience, thanks to the unique personalities of Jerusalem’s many neighbourhoods and public spaces, not to mention world-class museums and some of the world’s most important holy places.

Of course, all that is simply the setting of the ruach of Jerusalem. Jewish heritage and history is pervasive. "ere is a profusion of Jewish religious and educational institutions. Even stores,

restaurants and hotels have a Jewish touch, beyond the use of Hebrew. To be in Jerusalem on a Jewish holiday is to experience the city in public in a way that is not possible elsewhere. And then there is Shabbat, when the city is peaceful, the streets quiet and people dressed nicer than usual greeting each other with “Shabbat Shalom” as they pass. Jerusalem is more than beauty – it is a feeling of being at home and among family.

But can only Jews appreciate the magic of Jerusalem? Israel is the spiritual and emotional homeland of all Jews and occupies a special place in our hearts, but what is the signi!cance of Jerusalem to non-Jews? In all likelihood, few of us can answer that question.

to announce that Robert Carnevale has recently been hired as our new Manager of Member Communications. Robert will be working with other sta% and department heads to develop and institute a new strategic communications plan for Holy Blossom Temple. High on the list will be improvements to our website so that it becomes the central information hub for all member communications.

Holy Blossom has already begun to make changes in the way we communi-cate with you. Last fall, we moved away from using the to promote upcoming events and Services, and instead began focusing more on our members’ involvement in activities and programs at the Temple. We also began including more photographs from past

events. As well, we are

now using an e-newsletter called

as our primary way to publicize and promote

upcoming events. "is bi-weekly news-letter gives advance notice of everything that is going on at Holy Blossom. Each issue begins with an article from one of our rabbis, with an opportunity to discuss what was written with the rabbi by email. also has links to our website, where you have access to additional background information about coming events, plus our monthly Temple calendar, contact information and more.

We now have the following email services that you can subscribe to at your convenience:• —

direct link to view the on the day that it is put onto the Holy Blossom Temple website (before it arrives by mail)

• — upcoming events for families with young children

• — music-related messages

• — noti!cation whenever a member of our commu-nity passes away

• — interesting opin-ions about Israel, once every few weeks

• — information about Religious School and Pre-school

• Social Action — upcoming events

and suggestions for activism for worthy causes in the Jewish world and beyond

• Stagecra# Company — noti!cation about upcoming performances, audi-tions, calls for help for productions and workshops of interest to actors and directors

• — noti!cation of upcoming Tot Shabbat programs and information

• — &yers about upcoming events and registration forms

Yet, Jerusalem is holy to three reli-gions, all of which are represented in its population and have a strong historical and religious attachment to the city. As a result, the seeds of resentment, friction and hostility are also part of the reality of Jerusalem.

To understand and appreciate Jerusalem, we must see it through the eyes of Jews, Christians and Muslims. With these three perspectives, we are

in a better position to analyze the chal-lenges of accommodating three major religions in one city. So join us for this year’s Israel Seminar. For more details, please see the Gerald Schwartz/Heather Reisman Centre for Jewish Learning at Holy Blossom Temple Fall 2010 Calendar of Events or visit www.holyblossom.org/calendar_services_and_events.htm. To register for the series (cost: $40), please call Elana Fehler (ext. 532), at the Temple.

printed in Jewish folklore volumes, told to children far and wide and studied in sophisticated study halls too, is an old Midrash about two brothers.

Long ago there lived two farming brothers who tilled the land they had inherited from their father. "e older brother was unmarried and lived alone. "e younger brother lived with his wife and four children. "e brothers loved each other so dearly that they did not want to divide the !elds between them. So together they plowed, planted and harvested the same crop. "ey shared equally the produce of their labour.

One night during the harvest, the older brother lay down to sleep, but his thoughts were troubled. “My brother has

the responsibility of a family. Is it right to share our harvest equally? A#er all, he needs it more than I do.” At midnight, he arose and took a pile of sheaves from his crop, carried them to his brother’s home and le# them there.

"en he returned home and slept in peace.

"at same night, his brother also could not sleep, as his thoughts too were troubled. “When I grow old, my children will care for me. But what will happen to my brother in his old age? His needs are greater than mine. It is not fair to divide our crop equally.” So he arose and took a load of sheaves, brought them to his brother’s home and le# them there. "en he returned home and slept in peace.

When morning came, both brothers were amazed to !nd their crops exactly as the night before. "e next night each brother repeated his actions of the previous night. When morning came, again they were amazed to !nd they had

the same number of sheaves as the night before. On the third night, when each of the brothers was carrying a pile of sheaves to the other, they met at the top of the hill. Suddenly, they understood.

"e Midrash concludes with the teaching that it was at that moment when it was decreed from above that this was the place upon which it would be !tting to establish God’s Holy Temple.

"is moving story is typically told on Yom Yerushalayim, or Jerusalem Day, as the City of Jerusalem is the site of this special behaviour — peace, love and brotherhood.

"ese attributes of Jerusalem, which reign signi!cant in our tradition, are shared by others. What is the historical, emotional and intellectual Jerusalem to the Jews and our Jerusalemite neigh-bours? Our fall Israel Seminar will address this very topic, and all are warmly invited. For more details, please see page 6.
