GWU has been recognized as one of only 134 institutions in America on the John Templeton Foundation’s Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges.

GWU enrolls over 4,000 students from 33 states and 34 foreign countries in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs. Small classes in a personal learning environment allow the university to feature a 15-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. With increased national exposure and attention given to the institution’s academic programs and character building opportunities, the enrollment has grown over 60 percent in the last 10 years.

All of the necessary factors for academic excellence – faculty, students, resources, curriculum – are working in conjunction with one another to gain widespread acclaim from alumni, friends, trustees, the media and the community. Over 130 full-time faculty members comprise a group of educators at GWU being heralded as the "premiere class of instructors ever assembled at the University." Over 80 percent of the faculty hold a Ph.D. or equivalent, and many boast of well-documented activities in the business and professional worlds. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 15 to 1, Gardner-Webb is able to provide personal instruction to its students, who now number over 4,000, making Gardner-Webb the fifth-largest private institution in North Carolina. Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his fi fth year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took offi ce on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006. Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987. A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005.

After a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presidential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualifi ed candidate right here at the university.” Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005. Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission. He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, offi cially moving from college to university in 1993. The institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with a tremendous faculty and consistently evolving curriculum. Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. They are parents of two adult daughters and four grandchildren.

GWU ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATIONGWU ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATION

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 13th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 28th year in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became offi cial on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in facilities and the addition of fi ve new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department. GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last two academic years. Gardner-Webb’s fi nal year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs’ student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its fi rst Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also fi nished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of faces across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and the NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifi ers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007. Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 52, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is a member of the faculty at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis, a recent graduate of Furman University, Danielle, a sophomore soccer player at Brevard (N.C.) College and Amy (15).

Senior Woman Administrator Pam Scruggs is in her 30th year of service with Gardner-Webb University athletics, and remains one of the most vital components of the program’s success. Scruggs has served as Associate Athletics Director and SWA since 2000. Scurggs provides the athletics department with consistent and dependable performance in a number of crucial administrative areas. Her primary responsibilities include monitoring the athletics department budgets, monitoring the operation of the department’s women’s varsity programs, overseeing game-day operations and assisting in the administration of the University’s entire athletics program. Scruggs plays an invaluable role in the success of Bulldog athletics. Pam and her husband, John, have one daughter, Bonnie.

GWU CAMPUS FACILITIESGWU CAMPUS FACILITIES Gardner-Webb University’s campus has experienced tremendous growth and improvements to facilities, both academic and athletic, over the past 10 years. The school provides students with an excellent environment for learning and enjoying the college experience to its fullest. One of the newest facilities on campus, the Suttle Wellness Center is one of the most modern facilities of its kind on any campus in America. Whether you’re there to play billiards, ping-pong or air hockey, you can relax with friends in its cozy atmosphere. A spacious area with countless fi tness machines and free weights is located in the heart of the building, providing a top-notch facility for aerobic and anaerobic training for the entire student body. The Complex is also home to the legendary Bost Gymnasium, where countless intramural contests are held. University Commons, a set of apartment-style dormitories just adjacent to the beautiful Lake Hollifi eld Complex, is the newest and most impressive living facility on campus. A cutting-edge concept in on-campus housing, University Commons combines all the amenities of comfortable living – full kitchens, spacious living quarters, washer/dryers, and private bedrooms and baths. Internet connections and instant access to the GWU technology center make living conditions both modern and functional. Six separate buildings comprise University Commons, which has quickly become a popular choice among resident students. The postcard site of the University, the Lake Hollifi eld Complex, features the most modern bell tower in America on its six-acre facility. Walking trails, a picturesque lake, gazebo and swings are popular features for GWU students, faculty and staff, as well as residents from the surrounding communities. A newer feature of campus, the Broyhill Adventure Course has an impressive ropes course and climbing wall used by church and student groups, businesses and organizations to teach leadership and team-building skills. Located just beyond Lake Hollifi eld, the Broyhill Adventure Course is nestled in a wooded area that provides the perfect outdoor setting for physical exercise and activity. The Broyhill Course is one of the many campus features that make Gardner-Webb a nationally recognized character-building institution, an award designated by the Templeton Foundation of Washington, D.C. New technological features on our campus enhance the learning experience for a higher quality student. For example, Gardner-Webb’s Dover Library provides students with all the research and reference tools necessary for undergraduate and graduate educational pursuits. A helpful staff, computer databases, stacks of research materials and NC Live – a special computer system linking library resources from around the world – are all featured. One of the newest buildings on campus is also the oldest. Hamrick Hall, the only building remaining from the original GWU campus, was dormant for several years before being completely refurbished with ultra-modern amenities. It now houses the School of Business, with state-of-the-art computer labs, offi ces for business faculty and a 310-seat multimedia auditorium. Newly renovated Ernest W. Spangler Stadium, once voted one of the best venues to watch collegiate football in North Carolina, now seats over 7,500 and provides fans with a cozy atmosphere for enjoying a college football Saturday. The brand new football center, opened in September, 2004, houses state-of-the-art offi ces, locker rooms and a 5,600-square foot weight room which is open to all Gardner-Webb student-athletes. Gardner-Webb’s golf facility is located just off campus. The golf offices can be found there, along with a lighted, full-distance driving range. While GWU can use the driving range for flexible practice times, the Bulldogs also practice at beautiful River Bend Golf Club located just over four miles from campus. River Bend is a full 18-hole course that was founded in 1965. The 6,770-yard course can be a challenge for even the most experienced golfer and is nestled neatly in a scenic North Carolina foothills setting.


2010 SEASON PREVIEW2010 SEASON PREVIEW The 2010 season appears to be one of both excitement and high expectations, as Coach Cole’s squad returns all but two players from last year’s team that went 19-27 overall and 6-12 in its fi rst season as Big South Conference members. Heading into this season, the excitement rests on high expectations as the 2010 squad is perhaps the best mix of both experience and youth, veterans and newcomers, and offense and pitching Coach Cole has had since coming to Gardner-Webb nine years ago. “We have the best of both worlds, we are blessed with a veteran team, yet we are still a young team with 12 underclassmen,” commented Coach Cole. “While we have more seniors this season, our sophomores played a lot of innings last year and saw a lot of time for us as true freshmen. All have improved tremendously since last year and we are optimistic that the experience gained from last season will help us tremendously this season.”

PITCHING With no pitchers leaving the staff from last season and the addition of two newcomers, the GWU coaching staff is extremely optimistic about its pitching staff in 2010. “From top to bottom our pitchers are very diverse, which in turn provides us with a variety of weapons this year,” continued Coach Cole. “We have tremendous depth in the circle this season and strongly believe that this is one of the most talented pitching staffs we have ever had here at GWU.” Headlining the pitching staff is senior Christine Murray. Murray, who was named to the Big South Conference All-Tournament Team last season, made 28 starts for GWU a year ago. The right-hander from Ontario, Canada picked up a team-high 11 wins on the season, posting a 3.13 ERA on the year and fanning 193 batters, the most in the Big South Conference, along the way. “Christine was our number one last year and is our number one this year,” commented Cole. “We are expecting big things from her in her senior season.” Junior Cindy Boomhower is coming off a season in which she appeared in, and started, only six games before suffering a season-ending injury. Boomhower, whose absence in the circle last season clearly affected the Lady Bulldogs, threw only 38.0 innings, yet picked up 32 strikeouts and issued only seven walks along the way. The right-hander held opponents to a team low .224 batting average on the year while recording four wins, two of which were shutouts, and fi ve complete games. “Cindy is pitching well and had a very good fall,” stated Coach Cole. “With her being healthy we not only expect big things out of her, but we also anticipate a breakout year for her this season.” Senior left-hander Alison Coffey saw limited action last season posting a 2-3 record in 11 appearances. Coffey will again be asked to not only provide depth this season, but will also compete right away for a starting spot come the season opener. “Alison had a very strong fall season and we are optimistic that she will have a strong senior year,” said Cole “We believe Alison will pitch like she did her freshman year when she had 10 wins and threw over 120 innings for us.” The deep pitching staff also includes sophomore Kara Buchanan, who was thrust into action last season as a true freshman, and newcomers Presley Wesson

and Jessica Milligan. Buchanan appeared in 11 games last season and threw 20 innings, including, two innings in the Big South Conference Tournament. “Kara pitched well for us last year and fi lled a role for us throughout the season,” stated Cole. “As a sophomore we expect her to contribute even more this season.” “Jessica and Presley both had very solid fall seasons,” commented Cole. “We feel really good about having both of them out there for us this spring. They have tremendous potential and should provide us with quality innings even as true freshmen.”

CATCHER For the fourth straight season, it will be senior Mandy Ward suiting up behind the plate for the Lady Bulldogs. Ward played in 32 games last season, and was named to the Big South Second-Team All-Conference Team. Offensively, Ward was second on the team with seven doubles, and was tied for third on the team with two home runs. Defensively, the four-year starter was stellar behind the plate as she posted a fi elding percentage of .989, allowing only one passed ball all season long. “We expect a great year from Mandy in her senior season,” said Cole. “Mandy has worked well with all our pitchers and we expect her big bat to help us offensively in a tremendous way this year.” Sophomore McKenzie Morenus will also see time behind the plate for Coach Cole, providing some relief to Ward throughout the long season. Last year as a true freshman, Morenus started 41 games for the Lady Bulldogs, splitting time at third base, catcher, designated player and shortstop. Morenus was second on the team with 24 RBI’s, tallying 28 hits on the season, including four doubles and two home runs. Defensively, she led the Lady Bulldogs with three pick offs from the catcher position and also threw out 10 potential base stealers on the year. “Like all of our sophomores, McKenzie has improved tremendously from last season,” commented Coach Cole. “She has a strong arm, a big bat, and a great attitude. Plus, she runs the bases very well, and she does a good job of handling our pitchers.” Freshman Brittney Morrow could also see some time at the catcher position this season, while also providing depth at third base. “Brittney has nice hands behind the plate and hit the ball well this fall,” commented Coach Cole. “Her ability provides us depth not only at the catcher position, but also in the infi eld, particularly third base.”

INFIELD With the loss of only one infi elder from last year’s team in senior second baseman Angie Walls, the core of the Lady Bulldogs infi eld returns with the addition of a number of highly touted freshmen. A staple at fi rst base last season, senior Christa Fullwood will start there this season for Coach Cole’s squad. Fullwood, who started all 46 games for the Bulldogs last season, was named to the Big South First-Team All-Conference Team and also earned a spot on the Big South Conference All-Tournament Team. The lefty, who was named to the NCCSIA All-State University Team, was seventh in the nation with a .460 batting average for the year. She was ranked 23rd in the nation with a .519 on-base percentage and 48th overall with a 0.719 slugging percentage. Last year, as a junior she posted a GWU single-season record with a .460 batting average and led the team in batting average (.460), hits (64), doubles (12), home runs (6), RBI’s (36), total bases (100), slugging percentage (.719), walks (15), on-base percentage (.519) and putouts (257). “Christa had an exceptional year last season and we expect the same thing from her this season,” commented Coach Cole. “With some help behind her in the middle of the lineup, we hope teams will be forced to pitch more to her this year.” Behind Fullwood at fi rst will be Morenus who will be splitting time at fi rst base, catcher and designated player this season. Next to Fullwood at second base will be a new face in freshman Morgan Baker. Despite being a true freshman, Baker is slated to start the season as the Lady Bulldogs starting second baseman, fi lling the void left by graduating senior Angie Walls. “Morgan is an exceptional all-around player with great hands and a great bat,” stated Coach Cole. “Morgan is sound offensively, defensively and on the base paths and we expect her to make an immediate impact right away for us this season. With her bat, Morgan changes the entire dynamic of our line up offensively.” Joining Baker up the middle at shortstop will be senior Melody Harrell. Harrell, who is a four-year starter for the Lady Bulldogs, has spent the last

Harrell, who started and played in 45 games last year for Coach Cole, was named to the Big South Second-Team All-Conference Team. Harrell, led the team with 32 runs scored and seven stolen bases and was tops on the team with 148 at bats. The speedy leadoff hitter tied for fi rst on the team with three triples and was second on the team with four home runs, 50 total hits and 74 total bases. She was also second on the team with a .338 average, a .500 slugging percentage and a .361 on-base percentage for the season. “Melody has a very strong arm and has improved her game each year,” commented Coach Cole. “With her once again at the top of our lineup, we expect her to have a stellar senior season.” Freshman Jordyn Arrowood will start immediately at third base, as the newcomer made an immediate impact both offensively and defensively during the fall season. “Jordyn has a cannon for an arm and very good hands at third base,” remarked Coach Cole. “She is a left-handed slapper that has excellent speed, good foot work, and can cause problems at the plate and on the base paths for the opposing teams.” With fi rst base nailed down between Fullwood and Morenus, depth at the other infi eld spots fall on Baker, who will back up Harrell at shortstop, Arrowood, who could also see some time at second base, and redshirt-junior Ashley Whitlock. Whitlock, who came on late last season both offensively and defensively, played in 33 games, starting 31 of them in the GWU infi eld. Whitlock recorded 19 hits and six RBI’s on the year and posted a .946 fi elding percentage at third base. “Ashley will provide depth for us at both second and third, but predominantly at third” commented Cole. “She hit very well in the fall and we expect her to continue to contribute to our success.”

OUTFIELD While the outfi eld will be young this season with a junior and fi ve sophomores, the Lady Bulldogs are not lacking experience as all six outfi elders have playing experience. However, with the amount of depth and the talent that each Lady Bulldog brings to the table, all six student-athletes will be battling for playing time all season long. “We have a lot of depth in the outfi eld positions this season,” commented Coach Cole. “All of them will be competing for playing time and we expect all of them to be contributors this year.” Junior Kelsey Witter is perhaps the top returner for the Lady Bulldogs in the outfi eld, as she fi nished the season strong last year and had a superb Big South Conference Tournament. Last year as a sophomore, Witter played in 41 games, starting 40 of them as she saw action at catcher, third base, second base and in the outfi eld. Witter, who was named to the Big South First-Team All-Conference as a utility player, was third on the team with a .297 batting average, third on the team with 20 runs scored, 35 hits and 49 total bases and tied for third on the team with two home runs, six doubles and one triple. “Kelsey had an outstanding sophomore season last year,” stated Cole. “She is a leader both on and off the fi eld and nobody works harder than Kelsey. With her playing full time in the outfi eld this season, we expect her to continue to improve from last season.” Sophomore Melinda Dulkowski returns after starting last season in centerfi eld as a true freshman. Dulkowski, who improved as the season went along, played in 43 games, starting 40 for Coach Cole’s squad. Dulkowski tied for fi fth on the team with fi ve doubles and was perfect in the stolen base department on the year. “Melinda improved as the year went along last season and like all of our sophomores, she has improved tremendously from last year,” commented Cole. “Melinda has speed that helps us both offensively and defensively and has a great glove in the outfi eld for us.” Fellow sophomores Kelly Montgomery, Lindsea Hutchinson and Jane Savage all return with a year’s worth of experience under their belts, while newcomer Michelle Primm adds even more depth to the outfi eld, having transferred to GWU from Belmont Abbey. Montgomery played in 27 games, starting 20 as a true freshman and was tied for third on the team with two home runs, while Hutchinson will move to the outfi eld full time after seeing time in 22 games last season in the outfi eld, at designated player, at fi rst base and in the circle for the Bulldogs. “Kelly improved tremendously from last season when she was a freshman and will be competing for a starting spot in the outfi eld,” remarked Coach Cole. She gets good jumps on the ball, she’s exceptional at diving for balls, and she has a big stick.

“Lindsea Hutchinson has a very strong arm, a good glove, and a big bat. With her concentrating on playing just in the outfi eld this season, we expect her to help us both offensively and defensively and to compete for a starting spot from the start of the season.” Savage, who played in 36 games, recorded 10 hits, including two doubles and a triple, and scored 14 runs on the season. Savage, who tied for second on the team with two stolen bases, was solid in the outfi eld, posting a 1.000 fi elding percentage for the season, while Primm brings a very good stick to the line up for Coach Cole’s squad. “Like all the sophomores, Jane has improved tremendously from last year,” commented Cole. “She can hit for percentage, she has very good speed, and she’s doing a much better job defensively. She’s reading the ball better, taking better angles and getting in better positions to make plays.” “Michelle has a big bat and a strong arm,” continued Cole. “She had a strong fall season and will compete for playing time in the outfi eld as well as at the designated player spot. Michelle works hard, is very coachable, and is improving every day.“

SCHEDULE The Gardner-Webb University softball team will have a challenging slate in 2010, as head coach Tom Cole has stacked the schedule full of big time tournaments, in-state rivals and of course the always tough Big South Conference slate. The Lady Bulldogs will jump start its season with a month full of road contests which includes games in the Seminole Classic, hosted by Florida State; the Seahawk Classic, hosted by UNC Wilmington; the War Eagle Classic, hosted by Auburn University; and at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational, hosted by the Winthrop Lady Eagles. After a month of tournament play, the Lady Bulldogs will host it’s fi rst home contests on back-to-back days, playing a double-header against Charlotte on March 16 and then a double-header against North Carolina A&T on March 17. The following week the Lady Bulldogs will take on Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. on March 25, before starting conference play at home versus Presbyterian College on March 27. After stepping out of conference play against USC Upstate at home on March 30 and at Furman on March 31, GWU jumps directly into conference play, hosting Coastal Carolina, Charleston Southern and Winthrop at Varsity Field. Coach Cole’s squad will wrap up its regular season with a home double-header against Winston-Salem State on April 28 and a road double-header at East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tenn. on May 1, before competing in the 2010 Big South Conference Championship Tournament on May 13-15 in Conway, S.C. “We’re excited about the schedule we are playing, but it’s pretty much a typical GWU schedule,” stated Cole. “Year in and year out we step out of conference and play big time programs. This is how we’ve been able to get our most notable victories against NCAA Tournament teams UNC and Notre Dame. But, the reality is, our biggest games are always against our Big South opponents; and this year is no different.”

The winningest coach in Gardner-Webb softball history, head coach Tom Cole enters his 10th season at the helm for the Bulldogs. Cole came to Gardner-Webb in 2001 and produced immediate results, supervising GWU’s transition to NCAA Division I status and directing the Bulldogs to a school-record 36 wins in just his second year in Boiling Springs. For the Gardner-Webb softball team, 2009 was a season of fi rsts - the Bulldogs fi rst year competing as members of the Big South and the fi rst ever appearance for Gardner-Webb in the Big South Softball Championship tournament. Despite a very young team, as the roster consisted of seven freshmen and only two seniors, Coach Cole did not allow the youth to perturb the Bulldogs, as GWU picked up 19 wins on the season. With a 6-12 conference regular season record, the Bulldogs entered its fi rst ever Big South Softball Championship tournament in 2009 as the No. 5 seed, but turned some heads in the three-day event. Gardner- Webb went 2-2 in the tournament, defeating No. 4 Charleston Southern in the opening round and then eliminating No. 6 Coastal Carolina in the fi rst elimination game of the championships. While at the tournament the Bulldogs made history, as in the 12-8 win over No. 6 Coastal Carolina, the two teams combined for 20 runs, the third most in Big South Softball Championship history. The Bulldogs had four players receive postseason honors, as junior fi rst-baseman Christa Fullwood and sophomore utility player Kelsey Witter both earned spots on the All-Conference First-Team, while junior shortstop Melody Harrell and junior catcher Mandy Ward both were named to the Second-Team All- Conference. The four all-conference selections were the most ever for a GWU team in one year since the Bulldogs moved to the NCAA Division level in 2000-01. Fullwood along with Christine Murray were both named to the 2009 Big South Softball Championship All-Tournament Team as well. In 2009, Gardner-Webb’s Christa Fullwood also made waves nationally, as at the conclusion of the season, the junior was ranked seventh in the nation in batting average with her average of .460 on the year. Fullwood was also ranked 23rd in the country in on-base percentage at .519 and 48th nationally in slugging percentage at .719. Fullwood also was named to the All-Conference Academic Team and also earned a spot on the North Carolina All-State University First-Team by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association. The 2008 Gardner-Webb team was able to reach the A-Sun Tournament for the third consecutive season by earning the No. 6 seed. Cole and his squad went into the tournament and shocked No. 1 seed Lipscomb by a 3-2 score. The team competed just as hard in the classroom, fi nishing with the No. 2 grade point average in the country among all NCAA Division I softball programs while 10 GWU players were named All-American Scholars. In 2007, Cole guided the program to a 10-7-1 record in the A-Sun and a 35-26-1 overall mark, recording its fi rst-ever postseason win in Division I. The Bulldogs, with solid all-around team play, earned the No. 2 seed in the league and advanced to the conference championship for the fi rst time in the program’s history. The team broke nearly every major offensive statistical category en route to a second-place fi nish in the league during regular-season play. The 23.5 game improvement from the 2006 campaign marked the eighth-best turnaround in Division I history.

Melody Harrell fi nished the season ninth in the NCAA with 1.09 RBIs per game after amassing 51 in just 47 games. Abbie Looper, after blasting one fi nal triple in her career in the second round of the A-Sun Tournament, ended her season 14th nationally in triples per game (0.10). Off the fi eld, Joanna Ward earned fi rst-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III honors. Harrell garnered A-Sun All-Freshman team accolades. After the 2007 season, Cole took over the reigns of the Michigan Ice professional softball team for the fi nal three series of the season. While with the Ice, he was able to coach his former student-athlete and assistant coach, Lani Shaffer, who was playing her second season with the team. With only one senior on the squad and 11 underclassmen, Cole led his young 2006 team to a 12-38 record, fi nishing 7-13 in the Atlantic Sun despite having to deal with multiple injuries to the pitching staff. The seven wins were good enough for a spot in the conference tournament. Jessi Williams, who led the team in seven offensive categories, was named second-team all-conference and second-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III. In 2005, Cole saw his Lady Bulldogs post a 19-33-1 mark while suffering through a plague of assorted injuries, which hampered the squad all season. Not all was lost however as Rachael Riopel was named Second Team All-Atlantic Sun and was tabbed by CoSIDA as an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Third Team. Riopel was also selected to the North Carolina All-State Team by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association. Cole guided Gardner-Webb to the nation’s 14th-best turnaround in 2004, as it posted a 30-32-1 record to improve 10.5 games from the previous season. The Bulldogs also went 11-9 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, good enough for a sixth-place fi nish and the program’s fi rst-ever appearance in the A-Sun Championship. After leading the Bulldogs to a spot in the A-Sun Championship and just the third 30-win season in school history, Cole was voted as the A-Sun Coach of the Year by his league peers. Now with nine seasons under his belt in Boiling Springs, Cole owns a 205-281-3 record at Gardner-Webb, making him the only coach in school history with 200 career victories to his credit. Off the fi eld, Cole’s teams have been extremely successful. Three times the program has been rated in the top-20 academically by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Following the tremendous 2007 campaign, Cole’s team had 10 student-athletes garner NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete awards. The team fi nished fourth nationally with a 3.493 GPA. In 2006, he had nine earn NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete status while the team placed seventh with a 3.43 GPA. After the 2005 season, fi ve were named to the NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete roster. In 2003, the team was 20th in the NFCA with a 3.24 GPA. Eight of his student-athletes were named NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete. All nine of Cole’s teams have recorded a GPA of at least 3.07 since his arrival at GWU. In 16 years as a collegiate head coach, Cole has put together a 331-449-3 career record. He picked up his 300th career victory with a 6-0 win over Presbyterian on March 18, 2008. Prior to coming to GWU, Cole was the head coach at NCAA Division III Elmhurst (Ill.) College. There, the Jamison, Pa., native inherited a program that had to forfeit the last two games of its previous season due to a lack of players. Cole wasted little time in turning around the struggling program and during his fi ve seasons there, became the winningest coach in the history of the program. In 1997, Cole was named the CCIW Coach of the Year and the NFCA Division III Midwest Regional Co-Coach of the Year. Before his tenure as Elmhurst, Cole spent two years as an assistant at Kutztown (Pa.) University with the softball and women’s basketball teams. From 1988-92 he was the head softball coach, head women’s basketball coach and a physical education instructor at Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Cole also served a fi ve-year stint as athletics director and head coach for softball, girl’s basketball, and volleyball at Orlando Christian (Fla.) High School. Cole earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation and parks administration from North Carolina State University in 1977. Cole then went on to get his master’s degree from Florida International University in 1989.

Former Gardner-Webb standout Stacie Reichert returned to Boiling Springs as an assistant coach on Tom Cole’s staff in August 2007 and is now in her third year with the team. In her second season with the Bulldogs in 2009, Reichert had a tough task of mending together a pitching staff that was devastated by injuries and untimely illnesses all season long. Despite the obstacles, she helped junior hurler Christine Murray to 11 wins and a place on the 2009 Big South Championship All-Tournament Team. In the regular season conference games only, Murray was fi rst in innings pitched (90.0), strikeouts (98), and games started with 13. On the overall season, Murray was fi rst in the conference in strikeouts (193), third in the conference in opposing batting avg. (.250), third in innings pitched (181.1). Murray was twice named the New Balance Pitcher of the Week, coming on April 6 and April 23 and recorded a streak of 23 consecutive innings without issuing a walk. During her fi rst season as an assistant coach, she helped the Bulldogs to the fourth-best ERA in the school’s Division I history. Reichert also helped rookie Cindy Boomhower record the fewest walks per seven innings in GWU’s history, allowing just 0.91 walks per seven innings pitched. Reichert also directed the squad’s Christine Murray to fi rst place in the record book for strikeouts per seven innings as she struck out 7.46 batters every seven innings pitched. Reichert, who topped multiple single-season and career categories for the Bulldogs during her playing days, returned to Gardner-Webb after coaching at Frostburg State from 2005-2007. Reichert etched her name in multiple categories throughout her career. Upon graduating, she was the single-season leader in wins, complete games, innings pitched, strikeouts, ERA and shutouts. She topped the school’s record book for career wins, saves, complete games, innings pitched, strikeouts, strikeouts per seven innings, ERA and shutouts. During her freshman season, she recorded a team-best 69 strikeouts while tallying a 2.36 ERA. Reichert led the team in wins her sophomore campaign while amassing a mere 2.12 ERA in 28 appearances. She earned second-team all-conference honors her junior year and was named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association all-state team. Reichert posted 18 wins and led the A-Sun with a school-record 213 strikeouts. She also tossed a career-best 1.71 ERA. Reichert fi nished her career in 2005 by posting 166 strikeouts in 183 innings with a 2.33 ERA. Reichert received her master’s from Frostburg State in May 2007 in human performance. She currently resides in Shelby, N.C.

Diana Cook, a former standout softball player for Appalachian State University, enters her second season as a graduate assistant coach on head coach Tom Cole’s staff. Cook assists in everyday happenings of the GWU softball program including on the fi eld coaching, recruiting, travel and fi eld upkeep. Cook also assists head coach Tom Cole with the Bulldog hitting and offense. Cook comes to Gardner-Webb after a stellar playing career at Appalachian State. While with the Mountaineers, Cook virtually re-wrote the school’s record book. For a single season, she ranks fi rst in walks, games played and games started while also being etched in the record book as second for runs batted in, third in doubles and in homeruns. On the defensive side, Cook is fi rst in fi elding attempts, putouts and double plays. For her career, she is fi rst in fi elding attempts, putouts, double plays turned and walks. Cook is second in at bats, runs scored, games played, games started and in homeruns. She also fi nished her career by notching third-place overall for career RBI’s and total bases. Cook also brings a wealth of coaching knowledge to an already strong staff. Cook was a camp counselor from the fall of 2003 through the spring of 2006 at Appalachian State youth softball clinics, instructing beginners to advanced students in softball skills and strategies. For three summers, she was a volunteer assistant coach for the Cabarrus County Challengers ASA softball team. Cook graduated with a bachelor of science degree in physical education K-12 in December 2007 and is working toward her master’s degree in sport science and pedagogy.

2009 SEASON REVIEW2009 SEASON REVIEWFor the Gardner-Webb softball team, 2009 was a season of fi rsts - the

Bulldogs fi rst year competing as members of the Big South and the fi rst ever appearance for Gardner-Webb in the Big South Softball Championship Tournament. Head Coach Tom Cole’s squad in 2009 was very young, as the roster consisted of seven freshmen and only two seniors. Yet the youth did not perturb the Bulldogs, as GWU picked up 19 wins on the season. The Bulldogs started off the 2009 season with a win in its season opener, a 2-0 victory over Austin Peay at the Samford Bulldog Bash in Birmingham, Alabama. Gardner-Webb then dropped its next two contests, both against No. 24 nationally ranked Southern Illinois, before again defeating Austin Peay, this time 10-1, to fi nish its opening weekend at the Bulldog Bash at 2-2. Gardner-Webb then returned home to host the GWU Tournament at Varsity Field on February 20-21. Coach Cole’s squad fi nished the fi rst day of the tournament at 1-1, defeating Howard 9-1 before dropping its second game of the day to Lehigh 16-4. On day two of the event, Howard had to return home to due personal team reasons, leaving the Bulldogs and Lehigh to square off in a doubleheader. Lehigh was able to hold off the Bulldogs in game one, defeating the Bulldogs 7-5. Yet Gardner-Webb responded in game two, winning 16-11 in what was an offensive slugfest. At 4-4 after two weekend tournaments, the Bulldogs then traveled down the road to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on former Atlantic Sun Conference foe USC Upstate. The Lady Spartans of USC Upstate protected its home territory, shutting out the Bulldogs in both games of the doubleheader dropping GWU to 4-6 overall heading into the month of March. The Bulldogs opened up the month of March on the road at the Maryland Round Robin hosted by the University of Maryland in College Park. Gardner-Webb fell to the Big Green of Dartmouth University 12-3 in its fi rst game, but bounced back to pick up a big 3-1 extra inning win over the Manhattan Jaspers in game two. On day two of play, GWU battled with the host Maryland Terrapins before falling 1-0 in seven innings and then went on to decisively defeat Manhattan 8-0, the Bulldogs second win over the Jaspers in as many days. After the Maryland Round Robin, the Bulldogs jump started its spring break playing six games in three-consecutive days. On March 10, Gardner-Webb swept Winston-Salem State, defeating the Lady Rams 10-0 and 9-0 in Winston-Salem. Coach Cole’s squad then turned around the very next day to play a doubleheader against N.C. A&T in Greensboro, N.C., where the Lady Aggies swept the Bulldogs with a 3-1 win in game one and a 7-2 victory in game two. The Bulldogs then returned home to host the Lady Hoyas of Georgetown on the 12th. After the GWU bats were held hitless in the fi rst game of the twin bill, the Bulldogs took game two in dramatic fashion with a 3-2 walk-off win.

However, the Bulldogs dropped its next three contests, all of which came at home, falling to Towson 2-1 and 6-5, then dropping its fi rst-ever Big South Conference contest to Presbyterian 4-0 on March 19. Yet Coach Cole’s young squad responded with vengeance, sweeping Appalachian State in dramatic fashion in Gardner-Webb’s fi nal two non-conference games of the season. After holding off the Mountaineers in game one for the 3-2 win, a fi ve-run seventh inning capped off by a walk-off grand-slam in game two, gave the Bulldogs a 9-8 win. At 11-14 after the sweep of Appalachian State, Gardner-Webb opened up the heart of its conference slate with the Radford Highlanders on March 29-30. The Highlanders, who would go on to win both the conference regular season and championship tournament titles, defeated the Bulldogs in all three-games, dropping GWU to 0-4 in conference play. Gardner-Webb bounced back to pick up its fi rst ever Big South Conference win on April 2, as junior hurler Christine Murray pitched a one-hit complete game shutout to help lead the Bulldogs to a 2-0 win over Presbyterian. However, the Blue Hose battled back to defeat GWU 5-3 in the second game of the twin bill to put the Bulldogs at 1-5 in the conference after two series. The young Bulldogs responded by winning its next two conference weekend series, going 4-2 over that span. Gardner-Webb kicked off its winning ways with a 3-2 win over Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on April 4. After the Lady Chanticleers took game two on Saturday, the Bulldogs rebounded with a 2-1 win on Sunday to take the series 2-1. Coach Cole’s squad’s next series win came over the Liberty Lady Flames the following weekend, as GWU dropped the opening game 5-1, but bounced back at Varsity Field to sweep Liberty on Saturday, April 11, 2-1 and 6-5. Gardner-Webb then pushed its winning streak to three straight games on April 17, defeating Charleston Southern 4-1 in the opening game of a three-game weekend series and improving to 6-7 in the Big South. However, the Bulldogs dropped the next two contests to the Lady Buccaneers in Charleston, S.C., including a heartbreaking 4-3 loss in the third and fi nal game of the series. With the end of the semester approaching and exams looming, the Bulldogs struggled at the end of April, falling in three straight games to the pre-season favorites Winthrop Lady Eagles, which gave Coach Cole and his squad fi ve consecutive losses to end the season, its longest losing streak on the year. With a 6-12 conference regular season record, the Bulldogs entered its fi rst ever Big South Softball Championship Tournament in 2009 as the No. 5 seed, but turned some heads in the three-day event. Gardner- Webb went 2-2 in the tournament, defeating No. 4 Charleston Southern in the opening round and then eliminating No. 6 Coastal Carolina in the fi rst elimination game of the championships. While at the tournament the Bulldogs made history, as in the 12-8 win over No. 6 Coastal Carolina, the two teams combined for 20 runs, the third most in Big South Softball Championship history. The Bulldogs had four players receive postseason honors, as junior fi rst-baseman Christa Fullwood and sophomore utility player Kelsey Witter both earned spots on the All-Conference First-Team, while junior shortstop Melody Harrell and junior catcher Mandy Ward both were named to the Second-Team All- Conference. The four all-conference selections were the most ever for a GWU team in one year since the Bulldogs moved to the NCAA Division level in 2000-01. Fullwood along with Christine Murray were both named to the 2009 Big South Softball Championship All-Tournament Team as well. Gardner-Webb’s Christa Fullwood also made waves nationally, as at the conclusion of the Bulldogs 2009 season, the junior was ranked seventh in the nation in batting average with her average of .460 on the year.
