Product Range

Surface active agents, or short Surfactants, are usually organiccom pounds that are amphiphilic, meaning they contain both hydro-phobic and hydrophilic groups and are therefore soluble in bothorganic solvents and water. They reduce the surface tension of aliquid by adsorbing at the liquid-gas interface, allowing easierspreading, and lower the interfacial tension between two liquids,e.g. between oil and water, by adsorbing at the liquid-liquid interface.Surfactants are used as emulsifiers, wetting agents, dispersantsand stabilizers for different chemical and industrial applications.

The selection of surfactants described in this brochure is offeredfor the following application areas:

■ Air entraining agents for the construction industry■ Antifoaming agents■ Auxiliaries for the sugar industry■ Disinfecting agents■ Dispersing agents for pigments■ Emulsifiers for bitumen emulsions■ Emulsifiers for emulsion polymerization■ Emulsifiers for micro- and macro emulsions of fats,

hydrocarbons and silicon oils

Depending on the formal charge of their head, surfactants can alsobe classified into anionic, cationic, non-ionic, and amphoteric (dual charge) groups. The product overview on the following pagesis organized in this manner.

■ Emulsifiers for polyolefin wax emulsions■ Organophilic bentonite■ Wetting agents for adhesives■ Wetting agents for coatings, e.g. in building, construction,

textile and paper■ Wetting agents for electroplating processes■ Wetting agents for emulsions, dispersions, polymers, resins■ Wetting agents for hard surfaces like ceramics, wood, plastics

and metals

Nonionic Surfactants

Emulsogen EPN range Products from the Emulsogen® EPN range serve as efficient emulsifierswhich reduce the grit level during polymerization and improve dis -persion properties such as freeze-thaw stability, electrolyte resistanceand sheer stability. They are suitable for emulsion polymerization ofolefinic monomers or vinyl acetate together with other vinyl esters,

acrylates, vinyl chloride and ethylene, in acrylic and styrene/acrylicdispersions as well as in butadiene/styrene latex. Emulsogen® EPNalso finds widespread use in pigment preparations, paints and coatingsas a dispersing and wetting agent.

Emulsogen LCN rangeEmulsogen® LCN is a preferred surfactant in various application fields, such as emulsion polymerization, coatings, adhesives, construction and detergents. Specifically, as emulsifier for emulsion polymerization,Emulsogen® LCN improves the shear, temperature and electrolyte stabi-lity of polymer dispersions. At the same time, it can be used in inverseemulsion polymerization of water soluble monomers in hydrocarbonsand in emulsions of oils, fats, silicon oils, polyolefin waxes, alkyd resins,

mineral oils etc. As a medium foaming wetting agent in aqueous soluti-ons, emulsions, architectural paints, industrial and wood coatings,Emulsogen® LCN reduces the surface tension of the aqueous mediumand improves the wetting of hard surfaces. It is an efficient dispersingand wetting agent in aqueous pigment preparations and can be addedto emulsion paints to improve the scrub resistance.

Emulsogen® 4084 is used in emulsion polymerization of polyvinylacetate, acrylate and styrene/acrylate dispersions to stabilize therheological behaviour of the polymer dispersions and to improve the electrolyte and shear stability.

Low-foaming Genapol® PF 10, 20, 40 and 80 grades are used as asurfactant and defoamer in detergents and cleaning agents. They arealso used as an emulsifier in emulsion polymerization, improving theemulsion stability and preventing foam during the spray drying ofdispersion powders. As a wetting agent in aqueous coatings, theyreduce the surface tension of the coating formulation, improve thestability and shelf life and the adhesion of the coating onto the coatedsurface. They also serve as intermediate in chemical reactions.

Genapol® PF 80 Powder can also be added to solid admixtures in the construction industry to improve the wetting and redispersing ofthe powder, resulting in higher plastification and improved workabilityand overall performance of the plaster. Genapol® PF 30 can be appliedas a wetting agent and emulsifier for oils, waxes, paraffin and silico-nes, as emulsifier for emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers, styrene and vinyl acetate, as lubricant for polymers and resin proces-sing and as reactant for polyethers, polyesters and polyurethanes.

Because of its interfacial activity and low foaming behaviour, Genapol®

ED 3030 is especially suitable for the manufacture of low foamingcleaners. Due to its good lubricity, Genapol® B is used for the manu-facture of aqueous metal working fluids in combination with suitablecorrosion inhibitors. Genapol® ED 3030 is resistant against waterhardness, metal salts, acids and alkalis in practice-orientated con-centrations. Genapol® ED 3060 is a low-foaming wetting and disper-

sing agent for aqueous paints and coatings, in particular for whiteemulsion paints tinted with waterborne pigment preparations. It fun-ctions as paint stabilizer and tinting strength enhancer, improvingthe compatibility of pigments and minerals with polymers and bin-ders and preventing rub-out effects and flocculation of organic pig-ments during drying of the paint film. As quaternary fatty ammonium salts are compounds with strongbactericidal and fungicidal action, Dodigen® grades find widespreaduse in disinfectant cleaners and also help to control algae, for instancein cooling water and swimming baths. In cosmetics, Präpagen® andDodigen® grades are used e.g. in the formulation of hair care pro-ducts. In the textile industry, Präpagen® and Dodigen® grades are

used as softeners, re-wetting and antistatic and antibacterial finis-hing agents and have proved to be successful levelling agents andretarders in acrylic fibre dyeing. Other applications include the use asacid inhibitors, emulsifiers, dispersing agents, vulcanization accelera-tors, antistatic agents and auxillaries in paint applications.

Amine oxides are good surfactants and, unlike fatty alkyl ammoniumsalts, can be used together with anionic compounds without impair-ment of their surface-active properties. Our Genaminox® grades areused especially in the detergent industry, where they serve primarily

as foam stabilizers, in liquid acid and alkaline toilet cleaners, solubi-lizing agents and skin protective components in washing-up liquidsand carpet shampoos, and cosmetics, where they function as foamstabilizers and emulsifiers.

Their specific surface active properties make the Genamin® gradesa valuable basis and additive for the chemical technical industry. They can be used to manufacture textile auxiliaries (e.g. productsfor dyeing), as mineral oil additives, in crop protection products andpesticides, and as raw materials for cosmetics and adhesives.

Genamin® grades can be combined with all types at nonionic andcationic surfactants, and are compatible with anionic products on a case-by-case level. The Genamin® grades are resistant to mostchemicals at typical concentrations used and insensitive to waterhardness.

Amine ethoxylates

Betaines act as cationic surfactants and in alkaline solutions asinner neutral salts. They are often used in cosmetics.

Copolymerizable Emulsifiers

Classic anionic and non-ionic emulsifiers stabilize the emulsion byphysical interaction. However, these surfactants desorb at high shearforces or because of electrolytes which then in turn leads to coagu-lation of the latex particles. In order to avoid migration and nest formation in the polymer film,

Clariant has developed a range of copolymerizable emulsifiers, whichchemically bond to the polymer, inhibiting migration in the film andresulting in higher latex stability. Additionally, freeze-thaw stabilityand shear stability are significantly improved. The products are alsoless water absorbant and enable hydrophobic coating surfaces.
