Unit Mission Statement

The mission of the Dean's office and thus the College of Engineering, is to provide an innovative academic program of excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, judged by the highest standards in the field and recognized by national peers; to attract and graduate a greater number of minorities and women in professional engineering, engineering teaching and research; and to attain national and international recognition of the College through the educational and research achievements and the professional service of its faculty and students.

☒ ☐ At the Bachelor's level, we ranked 8th out of 361 US engineering programs in the production of African-American graduates. Criterion met. At the Bachelor's level, we ranked 111th out of 361 US engineering programs in the production of female graduates and were in the second quartile as targeted. Thus, criterion was met. Overall, we ranked 121 out of 361 in the total number of Bachelor degrees awarded. At the Master's level, we were at 54th out of 283 US engineering programs in the production of

African-American graduates. Criterion met. At the Master's level, we ranked 166th out of 283 US engineering programs in the production of female graduates. This is the third quartile and we fell short of 12 students to be within the second quartile. Thus, the criterion was not met. Overall, we ranked 166th out of 283 in the total number of Master's degree awarded. At the doctoral level, out of total 221 US engineering programs that reported, we were tied at the 87th position with 135 other engineering programs who had no African-American PhD graduates, this year. Since only 86 U.S. engineering programs had reported greater than (0) African-American graduates, 21st rank would have been the cut-off to be in the first quartile. We fell short of 3 African-American graduates, to be within the first quartile. Criterion was thus, not met. At the doctoral level, we ranked at 145th out of 221 US engineering programs, and were in the third quartile, in the production of female doctoral graduates. We fell short of (4) students in order to be within the second quartile. Criterion was thus not met. Overall, we ranked 124th out of 221 in the total number of doctoral degrees awarded. We met two out of three defined target measures for African-American students. We met one out of three measures for female engineering students. Overall, we met 3 of the 6 target levels.

Step 4

Reflect on Results

We met two out of three defined target measures for African-American students. We met one out of three measures for female engineering students. Overall, we met 3 of the 6 target levels. Last year, the college hired a new Director for Diversity and Inclusion to help with the retention and recruitment of minorities and women. One of her first responsibilities has been to develop a strategic plan to increase the overall enrollment of female students to 25% at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She will also be responsible for preparing a plan for the next three years by incorporating some of the best practices in the field. With increased enrollment, it is hoped that the college will climb in the rankings for female students. Based on the current year data, a realistic goal with regard to female engineering students will be to obtain the second quartile next year, and the first quartile within next four

to five years. The goal with regard African-American graduates will be to be in the first quartile next year.

Results made by faculty/staff from building services for public events.

Six half day camps were held on Thursdays during the weeks of of 6/15, 6/22, 7/6, 7/13 (two camps) and 7/20/2015 for six schools (5 elementary & 1 middle school) by the Challenger Learning Center, Tallahasse, and hosted by the College of Engineering. A total of 172 students from 3rd to 7th grade, participated in the camps using the facilities of the College of Engineering. At the College of Engineering, they were given tours of the Civil Engineering dept. lab with a demonstration, the wind tunnel at the AME lab, Robotics lab and the High Performance Materials Institute (HPMI) lab. These were all on Thursdays with a wrap of discussion and introduction to what is engineering and why they should choose engineering as a potential course of study and career. Multiple lessons and demonstrations occurred at the schools for the three days prior to these visits.

On September 25th, a group of students from FSUS (Florida State University Schools or "Florida High") was provided the opportunity to visit the College of Engineering and learn more about engineering. They learned about mechanical engineering through a talk from ME Department Chair, Dr. Emmanuel Collins. College of Engineering hosting an event for some of Florida High's students is a result of a grant from the Florida Board of Governors. The grant amount is $3 million, and is intended to support the College's efforts in raising awareness of opportunities in the STEM fields among K-12 students. Florida High's visit marked the beginning of these efforts. #2.On Friday, September 18th, the ASAP Center held its Second Annual Transportation Day at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. More than 140 community members, researchers, and K-12

students enjoyed presentations and demonstrations on the theme of "Transportation for a Lifetime".
