DAY 8 - Car rental delivery at Quinta dos Curubás. We suggest a visit to Furnas, the lake and the surrounding holeswhere the "Cozido" is cooked. Visit the "caldeiras", fumaroles and botanical garden where you can swim in the naturalpool of hot water. On the north coast, visit the unique tea plantation in Europe, and the belvedere of Santa Iria to discovera beautiful landscape of the island. DAY 9 - We suggest a visit to Sete Cidades. At Capelas you can visit the museum of arts and crafts "Oficina Museu". Stopat the viewpoint "Vista do Rei" to admire the blue lake and green lake. Descend into the valley and Sete Cidadesopportunity to stroll along the lakes or have lunch at a local restaurant. On the south coast you will find Ferraria, a spalocated on a cliff with a natural spa with salted warm water "pool" . DAY 10 - We suggest a visit to the Lagoa do Fogo. Driving by the mountain road and stop at the Caldeira Velha, pleasantsite for a bath of natural hot water. Stop for a magnificent view of the island and the ocean at 900m altitude. Located inthe heart of the island, this lake is one of the most beautiful places of the island in a pristine valley. On the town of Lagoaor you can visit a traditional ceramics factory (closed weekends and holidays). At Fajã Baixo visit the pineapple plantation.

DAY 7 - SÃO MIGUEL - Transfer from the hotel to the begining of the trail Lagoa do Fogo. Walk to Lagoa do Fogo, themost savage lake of the Azores, where you only can go walking. DAY 4 - SANTA MARIA - Walk Pico Alto/Anjos - Transfer from the hotel to the begining of the trail at Pico Alto forestroad (587metres) the highest peak on Santa Maria Island, with views of the whole island as well as views of São MiguelIsland on clear days, it goes through the Barreiro da Faneca (a unique ecosystem in the Azores, made up of reddish claylands, also known as the “Red Desert of the Azores”). At an old whale observation point, you can see Anjos, Ponta daBaleia, the Baía da Cré and the Lagoinhas Islet. Passing by a small water course descending to the bed of the Ribeira doLemos stream. Once you reach Anjos, you can visit the Furna de Santana. Return transfer to the hotel.

DAY 5 - SANTA MARIA - Walk Entre a Serra e o Mar - Transfer from the hotel to the begining of the trail. This trailbegins and ends at the parish church of Santa Bárbara and takes around 2h30. The trail begins on a beaten earth path,passing by two windmills in ruins, a stone quarry that provided the stone used to build the typical local houses. Along thetrail you will see the typical style of house built in Santa Bárbara, with its characteristic chimneys, typical colours and rural-style architecture and a unique view over the Bay of São Lourenço and the splendid waterfall that is around 50m in height.Return transfer to the hotel.

DAY 6 - SANTA MARIA / SÃO MIGUEL - Walk Santo Espírito / Maia - This 6.8km (c. 3-hours) walk begins next to theSanto Espírito Church in the Santo Espírito parish, goes through Maia and ends at the Whaling Factory in Ponta doCastelo.The path runs along the village in the direction of a traditional windmill, passing by the splendid waterfall of theRibeira do Aveiro, the Gonçalo Velho Lighthouse and crossing some traditional vineyards as well as an area classified as aSite of Community Interest and another classified as a Nature Reserve. Transfer to the airport. Flight to the island of SãoMiguel. Transfer from the airport to the Hotel Vila Nova.

Day 5 - TERCEIRA - Drive to Serra do Cume, a viewpoint with a beautiful landscape, popularly called "Patchwork Quilt".Visit the Algar do Carvão, an ancient lava tube located in the centre of the island. Considered a geological NatureReserve, it has an altitude of about 550 meters above sea level, with majestic stalactites and stalagmites and a pool ofcrystal-clear water. Visit the Natal Cave (10 minutes driving from Algar do Carvão), an extensive geologic formationcomposed by fluid lavas solidified that formed several tunnels, ramifications and stalactites.

Day 6 – TERCEIRA/PICO – Car delivery at the airport 1H30 before flight departure. Flight to Pico (35 minutes). Car pick-up at the airport. Accommodation at Hotel Caravelas.

Day 7 – PICO - Pico island is geologicaly the youngest island and its active volcano, with steep slopes and 2351m high, isthe highest point in Portugal. Visit Gruta das Torres, located in Criação Velha. This Regional Natural Monument is a cavewith volcanic origins, with about 5km extension, consisting in one of the biggest in the entire Archipelago. The main tunnelis about 4480 meters long, with heights that rise to 15 meters. In its interior it is possible to observe curious geologicalstructures such as stalactites, lava stalagmites, lateral tiers and lava balls. Drive by Criação Velha and Santa Luzia foran impressive view over an extensive area with a notable pattern of linear walls called "currais" built by hand with volcanicstone to protect the thousands of vineyards from the wind and the seawater. Place classified by UNESCO as WorldHeritage. We suggest a stop at Adega da Buraca for a wine tasting and other local products.

BEYOND THE VOLCANOES FLY & DRIVE - SÃO MIGUEL / TERCEIRA / FAIAL / PICO

Day 1 – SÃO MIGUEL - Assistance at the airport for car rental & internal flights ticket’s delivery. Accommodation atHotel São Miguel Park.

Day 2 – SÃO MIGUEL – Drive to the Sete Cidades Massif, an area with a central volcanic crater and lake-filled caldera,with various cones, deposits of pumice, lava domes and maars. In the northeastern flank of this volcano the Mosteiros Graben. Visit Ferraria in the extreme southwest of the island with its thermal springs of volcanic origin and its ThermalSPA. At Ponta Delgada visit to Gruta do Carvão, the longest lava tunnel of São Miguel Island that extends for 1912metres. The cave’s age is comprehended in the gap between 5000 to 12000 years old, classified as a Regional NaturalMonument. Located in a region geologically known as the “Complexo Vulcânico dos Picos”, an area of fissure volcanismcomposed of over 250 scoria cones and lava flows of basaltic nature.

Day 3 – SÃO MIGUEL – Drive to the village of Lagoa to visit the OVGA (Volcanology Centre), the science centre forapplied research and scientific dissemination in the field of volcanology, seismology and geothermal energy. Continuedriving to Furnas, a village with a Volcano comprising two ancient calderas, occupied by the lake of Furnas. Try thetraditional meal "cozido" cooked inside holes by the underground vapors of the volcano. Visit the fumerols and try thehotsprings in the centre of the village. There is also the nice Terra Nostra botanical garden where one can have aswim in a large natural warm water swimming pool. On the way back to Ponta Delgada drive to the top of the montain ofLagoa do Fogo, the central volcano on the island, for an amazing view. Stop for a swim at Caldeira Velha, a naturaltepid water swimming pool.

Day 4 – SÃO MIGUEL/TERCEIRA - Car delivery at the airport 1H30 before flight departure. Flight to Terceira (45 minutes).Meet & greet at the airport for information kit delivery and help with car rental at the airport. Accommodation at Hotel Praia Marina. Drive to Angra do Heroismo, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a picture-book town of imposingtownhouses and cobbled streets seemingly untouched by time. The best views of this once prosperous trading centre arefrom Monte Brasil across the harbour. Drive to Monte Brasil, an extinct volcano that emerged from the sea to join thecity of Angra do Heroísmo. It is a protected landscape and the city's natural park.

Day 8 – PICO/FAIAL - Car delivery at the car rental office (5 minutes walking from the harbour). Boat trip to Faial Island(boat ticket will be delivered at the hotel the day before). Car pick-up at the harbour. Accommodation at Hotel Canal. Visit the Cabeço Gordo Cauldron, located on the Capelo, marking the highest point in the Faial Island, with its attractiveviewpoint situated at 1043 meters above the sea level.

Day 9 – FAIAL - Drive to Capelinhos, inserted on the Capelo volcanic complex. This was the last volcano with eruption, in1957. This landscape is different from all the rest of the Island and of the Archipelago: this is a strange arid and volcanicbeauty. Visit the Capelinhos Lighthouse, where the volcanic eruption started, one has an excellent panorama over allthe volcano extension and its rare beauty. Here stands nowadays the Interpretation Centre that better explains thisphenomenon and its history, housing a wide room that symbolizes a volcanic eruption.

Located at Ginetes, on the southeastof São Miguel Island, Quinta das Raiadas has well trained horses for individual rides or horse-drawn cart. Quinta dasRaiadas provides a rustic experience with the symbiosis between the history, the culture, the art and the faith of a peoplein a living experience. Make a trip in slow motion through the fields, a rustic tour in which each horse stride takes youthrough the roads in what used to be covered by a busy country life style. Learn how to knead bread dough in the Azoreantraditional way and taste the old traditional flavors of this island.

At 10h00 you will be received with a warm welcome at the facilities of Quinta dos sabores and proceed to a detailed visitto the biological farm, with paticipation in the activities. At 12h30, a home made lunch will be served. Between 14h00 and17h30 - cooking souvenirs worshop. The participants will learn to/and cook some recipes using the farm products. In theend, these will make some beautiful and tasty souvenirs that participants can use as gifts or petit memoirs of their trip tothe Azores.Day 4 - SÃO MIGUEL - Full Day Furnas: preparation of the typical "cozido das Furnas". Here you will participate in theconfection of this traditional meal, after selecting and putting into a pan the vegetables and the meats, it's time to put thepot inside one of the holes located next to the lake of Furnas. The "cozido" takes about 5 to 6 hours to cook. While thestew is cooking, visit the Monitoring and Research Centre as well as the Forest of Jose do Canto Garden. Since the cookingtakes several hours, we suggest a visit to the village of Furnas and its hotsprings, or visit the botanical garden Terra Nostraand take a swim on the thermal hot water swimming pool. Transfer from the hotel to the city of Angra do Heroismo to make a visit on foot, passing by the main points of interest of this city UNESCO’s world heritage site since 1983. During the tour, there will be some stops: Museum of Angra do Heroismo, the Gardens of the Duke of Terceira, the Old Square, visit to the City Hall, visit the Palace Capitães Generais and to the Main Cathedral, the Bettencourt Palace and Convent of São Gonçalo (all visits depend on the day of the week, some of them might be closed). On the farm you will witness the raising of farm animals through the use of biological products as well as the cultivation ofbiological plants and vegetables, some of which are used in the delicacies and snacks that will be served. Throughout thefarm you will also witness some of the endemic vegetation, fruits and aromatic herbs, some of which are used as spicesand in teas. As you arrive at the building that houses the restaurant, “A Venda do Ti Manuel da Quinta”, whose access isthrough an antique grocery store that was operational until the mid 20th century, here you will witness the evolution ofthis space from a grocery/tavern up until its operation as a restaurant (Food Establishment). Firstly in this area you will beserved appetizers as was the tradition in this establishment and were you will observe the preparation of the same throughthe use of locally grown ingredients, changing the traditional recipes brought here by the original settlers coming fromcontinental Portugal, through the use of new products.

Being Islander on the Smallest Island of the AzoresExperience the tiniest island of the Azores

Corvo across the water, neighbour of Flores island, is the remotest and tiniest of the islands of the Azorean archipelago,being 6.5 km long and 4 km wide. There is one tiny settlement – Vila Nova do Corvo and, six kilometres uphill from thevillage, is the vast (300m deep and 2 km wide) green, the volcanic crater of the Caldeirão, reached on a wonderful walkwhich offers views of green pastures, the oceans and Flores across the water.

CAMELLIAS COLLECTION SÃO MIGUEL

The Furnas Valley became popular towards the end of the 18th century, due to the growing interest in the use of mineralwater to treat health problems, such as rheumatism and obesity. Furnas has hundreds of small springs and streams, andthe Terra Nostra Garden is born in the midst of this magnificent water system.Today at Terra Nostra, you can find flora typical of the Azores and impressive centennial trees, some of which wereshipped from as far as North America, Australia, New Zealand, China and South Africa. Over the past two decades, theTerra Nostra continued to enrich its botanical value through the acquisition of new plant species. This constant concern todiversify and enrich the existing flora ensures that the garden now possesses large collections with plants of majorhistorical and cultural value. These collections include the Camellia Collection, the Fern Collection, the Cycadales Collection,and more recently the Bromeliad Collection. All of the existing flora, in a garden area of 12.5 ha, contribute with theircolors, forms and growth to making the garden a fine destination in itself, and wonderful to visit any time of the year.

Day 1 - SÃO MIGUEL - Meet and greet at the airport of São Miguel. Assistance for rental formalities at the airport andinformation kit delivery. Day 2 - SÃO MIGUEL - Half day tour to the Terra Nostra Botanical Garden. You will be accompanied by the residentagronomist Carina Costa and the head gardner, who will guide the visit throughout the extensive collection of camelliashrubs, including both ancient and other more recent cultivars. The more than 600 different species and cultivars ofcamellias found in the garden enrich the natural landscape and create an environment of unique beauty, from autumn(with the flowering of the Sasanqua camellia) until spring, with the flowering of the other species. Many of the camellias inthe Terra Nostra Garden have been identified and labeled and have been divided into distinct areas, set out according tothe surrounding landscape and devised in such a way as to facilitate exhibition of the entire collection. As such, visitors canfind a camellia garden divided into five distinct areas, filled with cultivars of Camellia japonica, Camellia reticulata and itshybrids, Camellia sasanqua and its hybrids, hybrids and other botanical species. However older trees of Camellia japonicacan also be seen along the lake´s banks as well as along the garden’s paths.Day 3 - SÃO MIGUEL - Visit to the Furnas Monitoring & Research Center, located on the southern shore ofFurnas Lake. The mission and objectives of this project in Furnas are the protection of the ecosystem of the valley ofFurnas and improvement of the lake water. In this center the visitor is led to the discovery of the pond ecosystem throughthe characterization of its geology and volcanism, limnology and lake ecosystems, hydrological, native flora and fauna.After the visit to the centre another visit is scheduled to the Mata do Jardim José do Canto. This forest is located inSouthern Furnas Lake shore, surrounding the shrine of Our Lady of Victories and the two buildings situated on the banksof the lake: a Flemish Anglo cottage, and a French-Swiss challet, residence of the owners today. In the current property, the layout of the garden area of about 10ha, there remains conserved as the French project. Onthe west end is the well known "Valley of the Ferns" rebuilt in the mid-twentieth century by the parents of the currentowner. The streets of Forest Garden are flanked by beautiful groves of camellias, many of them centuries old, which bloomin the period from January to May and are a good collection of ancient camellias.

This is directly related to the diversegeologic formations of the Azorean archipelago – caves, tunnels and sand bottoms around the coast, in low lying areasclose to the coast or in submarine mounts or peaks further from the coast.Noteworthy that the “Baixa do Ambrósio” there is a yearly concentration of Devil rays unlike any other place in the world,is a sure bet.Natural Reserve Formigas and Dollabart is considered by many as the best diving location in Europe, the reserve is located20 miles Northeast off the island of Santa Maria in “open sea”. A vast number of sub-aquatic species may be observedhere. It should be noted that the highest number of sightings of the pelagic species takes place in this area of thearchipelago.
