Taconic Running Life MARCH, 1991 MANY ARE COLD, BUT FEW ARE FROZEN by: MelaniG Benvenue The "Freezer Fives" didn't exactly live up to their name. The 5K race on 2/10 was he 1d in mild weather, and although the 5 Miler on 2/2k saw the t e m p s i n t h e 1 o w 20s, the absence of snow left the back r o a d c 1 e a r , a n d fortunately there were no last-minute course changes, so both races were very accurate. Paul Fendler won the 5K and Tommy Neeson took the 5-miler after a brief battle with Lou Guerra, w h i c h s a w T o m m y p u l l away from Lou and the rest of the pack r i g h t a f t e r t h e o n e - m i l e m a r k . Dear TRRC,

As I returned from ray run today I received an unexpectedpresent. Santa TRRC had delivered a beautiful silver platterwith my name engraved as 1990 Taconic Road Runner of theY e a r .

Well, I was ouite surprised considering that I had beentold that my award fell overboard 3 mos. earlier since I wasunable to attend the TRRC Dinner Dance award ceremony.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank themembers of Taconic who were responsible for choosing rae asRunner of the Year. It was botn a great surprise and honorto receive the award. It was also a great way to celebrate ray10th year o f runn ing.

I appreciate all of the encouragement and support bothmy family and I have received since Becoming a Taconicm e m b e r . Make sure you jog a couple of miles as awarm-up and cool down, and be sure to stretch well, concentrating on the hamstringsa n d h i p fl e x o r s .

Among the many benefits of hill training is that it forces you to call upon manymuscle groups, thereby sharing the energy load. "The whole idea is muscle teamwork, to achieve a synchrony with the arms and legsthat's really beautiful," says Martin. "If you've trained on hills, you know you'vebeen to the promised land."
