WHAT IS SOCIAL DISTANCING?Under the Australian Government’s social distancing guidelines, people should remain at least 1.5 metres apart to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. To ensure that social distancing can be maintained, no more than one person should be permitted for every four square metres of floorspace.

Police officers are enforcing this rule and issuing fines to those retailers and businesses who do not comply.

HOW CAN LIQUOR RETAILERS PROMOTE SOCIAL DISTANCING?On the following page is a checklist of practical steps and measures that retailers are encouraged to take to promote social distancing. Retail Drinks strongly recommends liquor retailers adopt the following measures to help keep your staff and customers safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19.

PRACTICAL STEPS & MEASURESTO BE A COVID-SAFE RETAIL LIQUOR STORE

CHECKLIST:

SIGNAGE & FLOOR MARKINGS

PAYMENT METHODS

OTHER PRACTICAL MEASURES

HYGIENE & CLEANINGErect signage at the entrance to, and in-store reminding customers to maintain a physical distance of at least 1.5 metres, as well as specify the maximum number of people allowed in-store at any one time.

Where applicable, entrance signage that stipulates that all customers are required to wear a facial covering before entering the store. Note - please ensure that ID checking procedures are adhered to (refer to page 4).

Place distinctive markings on the floor near the register to ensure that customers queue 1.5 metres apart. The images on the cover and second page are good examples of adequate floor signage.

Insist on customers using contactless payment methods such as ‘tap-and-go’ cards rather than cash.

Consider assigning an employee at the entrance of the store to monitor the number of customers entering at any one time noting that for every customer, there should always be at least four square metres of floor space.

Space out your check-outs in store to ensure a distance of at least 1.5 metres (if you have multiple check-outs).

If your business does home deliveries of alcohol, think about adopting contactless delivery methods for customers (Retail Drinks’ guide on how to do this can be accessed here).

Where applicable, ensure that all staff wear a facial covering at all times when on duty.

Frequently disinfect high-touch surfaces and objects (e.g. tills, countertops, fridge door handles etc).

Clean cash registers and EFTPOS terminals with a soft cloth and alcohol-based cleaning solution.

Avoid using water-based solutions to clean payment terminals as this may affect the functioning of circuit-boards.

Provide staff with disposable gloves to wear whilst handling items at the register. Ensure that these gloves are regularly replaced.

Place a dispenser of hand sanitiser at the entrance to the store, and on the point-of-sale counter/s for use by staff and customers.

If a customer is wearing a face mask, or any other type of facial covering (e.g. helmet, religious head scarf, sunglasses, etc), all Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) requirements still apply.

Staff members must be satisfied that they can identify the person (when ID checking) to ensure compliance with alcohol (age-related) purchase restrictions.

If a staff member is unsatisfied, then additional measures should be taken to confirm a customer’s age (e.g. requesting an alternative form of ID or requesting that the customer temporarily remove any facial covering for this purpose).

Note: State & Territory legislation does not provide any power for the seller to require that the purchaser removes any item of clothing, however the seller is able to refuse sale should they be unable to establish the age of the purchaser.

If the staff member is still in doubt, then they should be refused service.

Note – If situations escalate we remind all retailers to contact your local police as enforcement of these rules is not the responsibility of your staff.

Retail Drinks and the retail liquor sector take their responsible service of alcohol responsibilities seriously which is why we continue to promote a range of initiatives to discourage underage attempts at purchase and to educate parents and adults about their responsibility to not purchase alcohol on behalf of minors.
