Much school funding, in terms of both personnel and

DRAMA NEWS FIRSTLY, A BIG THANK YOU to the ladies from the Second Hand Uniform shop Simone Holmes and Anne Moran for thinking of the Drama Room once again. Some of the monies raised this year have gone towards the purchase of an Ipad for the Drama Room. It is going to be so handy to have the Ipad to record the many performances and to show the students their presentations immediately. This is a wonderful tool for our drama experience. Working Bee

Through the combined efforts of hard-working parents and parishioners we had a very successful working bee last

Saturday afternoon. Between the school and parish grounds a number of tasks were undertaken. The parish grounds

were given a general tidy-up, the gardens on the banks of our school oval were mulched, new sand was put into the prep

sand-pit and a long jump pit was created on the oval. Additionally the top-end of the school beyond the Yr4/5 Block was

cleaned up. Above all else the working bee was conducted in a very organised, friendly and energetic manner. It was

great to see our school and parish working so well in partnership and new friendships being developed. Many thanks to

Mr Dominic Murphy, who co-ordinated the event and the large number of parents who contributed so much of their time

and effort. Well done to all!

Zumalai Day

Zumalai Day was a wonderful success. It was planned as a day to live simply as a child living in Zumalai East Timor

would. As a result our students weren’t able to use electricity for the day which meant no fans, no lights or chilled water.

Class teachers were also encouraged to avoid using text books and coloured pens and use a single sheet of paper and a

pencil for the day. We even used an old fashioned bell instead of the electric one. Additionally all students were

encouraged to have a very simple morning tea and a bowl of rice for lunch. Our Year Seven leaders cooked and served

the rice which was so gratefully received by the children. Following lunch our year sevens led a very reflective prayer

assembly. The year sevens shared video clips of life in Timor Leste and a wonderful PowerPoint which revealed some

staggering statistics regarding poverty in our world. It is my hope that as a Catholic school community we can nurture in

our children a sense of concern for the poor and a true appreciation of the countless gifts that we are blessed with.

Thanks to everyone involved in the day particularly Emma Ponti and our Year Seven leaders.

Donations for Zumalai

In the past we have organised a Spellathon to raise much needed funds for Our Lady of Mt Carmel, Zumalai, East Timor.

Each year our school raises $12,000 approximately which directly supports a range of projects for our sister school. In

recent times our donations have allowed the Carmelites to build a boarding house for children who would normally walk

to and from school, covering very long distances. By the time many students return from school it is nightfall. Without

power in many villages the students are not able to study at night. The boarding house enables students to live at the

school from Monday to Friday returning home for the weekends enhancing their ability to study effectively.

$12,000 equates to approximately $22 per child. If our students are able to forego some of their weekly treats or pocket

money I’m sure we could reach this target again in 2013. Please encourage your child to actively seek donations from

their friends and relatives and please ask them to tell you all about what they learnt as a result of Zumalai Day.

I will leave you with an image from Zumalai Day and some reflective questions that are worth examining on a regular

basis.

Enjoy the rest of your week!

Reflection

Take time this week, maybe every week, to consider all of the wonderful things in

your life. What are you grateful for that you may have taken for granted?

As you eat your food, consider your good fortune to have it.

As you take a sip of water, give thanks that it is so plentiful in your life.

As you greet loved ones, appreciate the gift of their health and safety. As you turn on a light, snuggle into bed, or watch TV…..consider

how fortunate you are to have these luxuries in your life.

Think about your lives and the lives of those who have none of what you enjoy. Be grateful for everything that you have and think about

how you can share with others less fortunate.

P&F Update Zumalai Day

On Tuesday it was wonderful to see our staff guiding the

children to think about how different life can be in other parts

of the world. This year, Zumalai Day has replaced the

Spell-a-Thon as a way of raising both awareness about and

funds for the Carmelite school in Zumalai, East Timor. Last year,

through the combined total of Mission Day ac(vi(es and the

Spell-a-Thon, our school community was able to donate over

$11,000 to this important project. Last year, Sr Rosemary

Pa&erson spoke about the school building work, and it is

incredible to see how much they are able to achieve with these

funds.

School Banking News In 2014 the School Banking program will be launching a new set of exciting reward items for students to redeem their tokens for. Each reward item will continue to be valued at 10 tokens (i.e. 10 deposits) and there will be two new reward items for students to choose from each term.

With exciting new reward items on offer in 2014, please be aware that the Dollarmites moneyboxes will no longer be available next year. To avoid any child missing out on claim-ing their moneybox, please let your children know of this change and encourage them to redeem their moneybox this school year if they wish to receive one. In an effort to ensure

your child doesn’t miss out, the rule of one money box per year has been removed. If your child is trying to collect the series of Dollarmite moneyboxes, they are encouraged to do so before the end of the school year. Please understand that they still need to redeem each moneybox for the required 10 tokens.

Changes in 2014 Due to the Commonwealth Bank implementing of a new reward tracking system, we wish to advise that tokens received this year will not be carried over to next year to claim rewards.

Each child will start at zero deposits at the beginning of the 2014 school year. Therefore your child can only use tokens

this year to claim their reward but will need to claim their reward by the end of this term. There are 7 weeks left for your child to claim a reward so please keep this in mind. Any questions please contact the School Banking team on Tuesday mornings working in the School Hall.

Congratulations to Year 2C bankers for making the most amount of deposits in Term 3! The class has received some

special gifts for all their great banking efforts. School Banking Team

PARENTING TODAY'S TEENAGER

Q & A Evening for Parents with Dr Jeff Kemp

Wed 23 October 7pm

St Joseph’s Primary School

Anglesey Street, Kangaroo Point

• Why is parenting a teenager like taking a wild roller-coaster ride?

• What's the same and what's different in parenting a teen in today's fast changing complex

media driven world?

• Why do you need to 'be a parent, not a pal' to effectively parent today's teenager?

• What are the six parenting essentials?

St Joseph’s Primary School is pleased to announce that Dr Jeff Kemp has kindly offered to come speak to parents

about preparing for parenting teenagers. A father of four, Dr Jeff Kemp is a highly successful educator with over

30 years experience as a primary school teacher, a secondary school teacher, a university lecturer, a presenter at

National and State conferences, and guidance counsellor working with children and teenagers. In addition to his

Doctorate of Education, he holds Bachelor Degrees in arts and education, as well as a Graduate Diplomas in

Educational Psychology, Special Education, and Leadership Studies. He is currently the Guidance Counsellor at

St Michael’s College, Merrimac on Queensland’s Gold Coast. Jeff's work has been recognised in State and

Commonwealth Government awards for his outstanding contribution to youth in the community.
