Wyeth garnered considerablerenown for his work with Scribner’s, particularly his illustration of the ScribnerClassics. The present painting illustrates a fantastic yarn about an unknownartist, a farmer in fact, painting in the Pennsylvania country side. A veryrespected picture-dealer in London tells the tale of discovering the artistamong the Quakers. The picture-dealer had just wandered far through fieldand forest before dawn, stopping to lean on a tree as the artist brought hiscows out to graze as the sun rose beyond the hills. When the picture-dealer’s guests saw the farmer’s painting, he drew comparisons to Vermeerand Leonardo Da Vinci. It seems only fitting that Wyeth would be asked toillustrate a story of an exceptional artist working in rural Pennsylvania.$120,000-180,000

His subjectswere often pulled from daily life: his family, objects around the studio, andthe surrounding landscape when he escaped the city. Painted in the late30’s or early 40’s, the present work illustrates a period of transition for theartist as he began a departure from a more expressionist style to hissignature figurative style of even, broad fields of color contained by firmlydelineated lines. This work has been examined by The Milton and Sally Avery ArtsFoundation and will be accompanied by the Foundation's official letter.$200,000-300,000
