15 “HEALTH FOODS” THAT WREAK HAVOC

ON THE FEMALE METABOLISM It’s very common nowadays to see hundreds of products in the grocery store being marketed as “health foods”. Companies claim that these foods are somehow better for your body and your waistline in general, while also not sacrificing on taste. However, what many of these companies don’t want you to know is that most of these “healthy” alternatives are anything but that, and actually cause increased fat storage and damage to your metabolism and health in general. There outright false claims cause women all over the world a lot of frustration and misery as they struggle to see the weight loss results they dream of as they continue eating what they think is helping them, but in reality is causing them to go backwards. In this report, I am going to set the record straight and reveal to you 15 of these so-called “Health Foods” that you should AVOID if you want to lose stubborn fat and keep your metabolism firing on all cylinders. FAT STORING FOOD #1 – MARGARINE Margarine was developed in the early 1800s – not as a healthier alternative to butter, but rather a cheaper one. In fact, margarine become popular during the Great Depression and World War II, when Americans were struggling the most financially - margarine was another way to cut costs on the grocery bill. Margarine was originally made from animal fat, but eventually chemists learned how to substitute animal fat with other substances in order to create a hardened stick that would more closely resemble a stick of butter.

This moved margarine away from a soft, “tub” version to a harder stick of margarine that appeared to be more similar to butter, but being significantly more processed. Margarine today consists of a collection

of ingredients you would never find in any typical kitchen, all designed to behave, taste and look like butter. Even the color is manipulated so that the margarine has the same yellow as butter! Why is Margarine Bad For Weight Loss And Overall Health? The reason why Margarine is harmful to your metabolism and causes you to store excess fat is primarily due to the fact that margarine contains a high percentage of harmful polyunsaturated fats. Polyunsaturated fats are unstable when exposed to light or stored for a long period of time, generating what’s known as ‘free radicals’. These free radicals have been proven to cause various health issues such as cell damage, aging, heart disease, cancer and compromised metabolism function resulting in increased fat storage.

The issue with polyunsaturated fats comes from the processing procedure, which occurs heavily in margarine. The extraction procedure of many cheap oils from their seed sources creates these harmful, fat-storing free radicals, which then goes into the margarine. Secondly, the process of hardening these oils to create the more solid “stick of butter” structure of margarine, which is called ‘hydrogenation’ generates artificial and toxic trans fats. Trans fats are commonly known as the “bad” kind of fat, has been shown to decrease immune response and fertility, while also increasing the risk of heart disease. Trans fats also increase your blood insulin levels, which increases the rate at which your body stores body fat while also putting you at greater risk of diabetes and increasing your levels of LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol). Even if you’re cautious and purchase margarine that is labelled “trans fat-free”, margarine companies are still allowed to include these trans fats under a certain amount. Remember, no amount of trans fat is a healthy amount. The closer your intake is to zero, the better for your weight loss and overall health and wellbeing. What to use instead or margarine: Despite what some mainstream health sources say, plain butter is the safest option for your metabolism, and much better for you than margarine.

The saturated fat in butter isn’t harmful to your metabolism as it doesn’t come with free radicals like the polyunsaturated fats in margarine. However, despite the fat being “good fat” in butter, you still need to be mindful that butter is very dense in calories, so don’t over-do it! Also try to find organic butter if you can, the closer to nature your food is, the better! If you’re cooking and don’t like to use butter, try unprocessed oils such as olive oil, macadamia oil, coconut oil (proven to speed up your metabolism with other health benefits) and flaxseed oil.

FAT STORING FOOD #2 – CANOLA OIL Despite what you may hear from the mainstream media about canola oil being “heart healthy” and a good source of monounsaturated fats, canola oil is something to steer clear of if weight loss and your overall health is of concern to you. Before we get into the specifics of canola oil itself, it’s important that you understand that much of what you hear in the mainstream media in the way of dietary advice has been influenced by big food companies with ruthless marketing agendas hidden beneath the surface. You see, canola oil is extremely cheap for the big food companies to produce, so having the population believe that it is a healthy oil choice will ensure that they can continue to profit off this harmful cooking oil by selling it in bulk to restaurants and the general public. The DIRTY truth about canola oil: What the big food companies don’t want you to know… Canola oil is made from something called rapeseed. Rapeseed actually had to be modified over the years to reduce the percentage of a harmful component, erucic acid. This erucic acid has been bred out of rapeseed to very low levels, so it is a non-issue in the canola oil available today. Because of the success of removing this harmful acid, many authorities will reference this absence and claim that canola oil is indeed beneficial and healthy, but don’t be fooled…

The reason why canola oil is so harmful is because the oxidation of polyunsaturated foods (which occurs during the processing procedure of canola oil) results in large amounts of free radicals. As we discussed when we looked at margarine, when these free radicals enter the blood stream they cause various problems such as inflammation, cell damage, compromised metabolism and increased fat storage, as well as increased risk of heart disease and cancer. The presence of harmful free radicals in canola oil is what these mainstream media sources either don’t understand, or are simply ignoring. Canola oil contains 55-65% monounsaturated fat and between 28-35% polyunsaturated fat, with a very small amount of saturated fat. While some foods that are high in monounsaturated fat are indeed good for us (in unprocessed oils such as virgin olive oil, avocado oil or from unprocessed nuts and seeds), because of the refining and processing that occurs when producing canola oil, the polyunsaturated fats are oxidized and introduce harmful free radicals into your body. The end result is an oil that is highly inflammatory in your body when ingested, damaging your cell membranes, contributing to heart disease and other degenerative diseases and increasing fat storage and weight gain.

What To Use Instead? One of the best alternatives to canola oil is extra virgin olive oil, as it is cold pressed without the use of heat and solvents to aid in extracting the oil. It also contains much less polyunsaturated fats than canola oil, so is therefore more stable. Extra virgin olive oil also contains important antioxidants that help protect the stability of the oil so that the polyunsaturated fats are not oxidized, creating the harmful free radicals present in canola oil. As well as EVOO, other safe and metabolism-boosting include organic butter, coconut oil, macadamia oil and avocado oil.

FAT STORING FOOD #3 – WHOLE WHEAT BREAD Whole wheat bread is often recommended by many mainstream health sources as a healthy alternative to refined wheat (white bread). And well, they’re not exactly wrong. Whole wheat is “less bad” than refined wheat… But one of the main problems with almost all whole grain foods is that the “whole grain label” used to convince you that you’re choosing a healthier alternative is just that, a label. In fact, in almost all cases the grains have been processed heavily into a very fine flour that is just as rapidly digested and spikes blood sugar as much as regular refined wheat. While whole grain bread may contain a little more fibre and more nutrients compared to white bread, there really isn’t all too much different when it enters your system in relation to how it is used for energy (and stored as fat). The glycemic index (the measure of how quickly foods spike blood sugar) of almost all forms of whole wheat bread is just as high as regular white bread. This means that about the same amount of insulin is released when eating whole wheat bread as regular white bread. If you don’t already know, insulin is a growth and storage hormone that prevents the body from utilizing stored body fat for energy (fat burning) and promotes fat storage.

Many studies have shown that even whole wheat that is claimed to be “heart-healthy” can lead to health problems (1,2,3), especially to people who are sensitive to gluten (a high percentage of the population are at least a little bit intolerant to gluten). The bottom line is that whole wheat bread is usually not made with actual whole grains. It spikes blood sugar (and thus insulin) just as fast as regular white bread, resulting in increased fat storage and decreased fat mobilization, and contains gluten which is harmful in some way to a high percentage of the population.

FAT STORING FOOD #6 – LOW-FAT YOGHURT

Yoghurt is another food that most consider a “healthy” option, and one that is beneficial to weight loss. While there are forms of yoghurt that do carry lots of health benefits, there are also types of yoghurt available that are harmful to your health and will put a stop to your weight loss progress.

For example, most of the “low-fat yoghurts” that you find on the shelves being marketed as “healthy” are often the complete opposite. You see, when food manufacturers remove the fat from foods, the natural consequence is that the taste takes a nosedive. So they will

then add a whole bunch of harmful ingredients to compensate for the fat that has been removed and improve the taste. In the case of low-fat yoghurt, they almost always add sugar, high fructose corn syrup or some kind of artificial sweetener. FAT STORING FOOD #8 – COMMERCIAL SALAD

DRESSINGS Salads are the “go-to” diet foods for most people. They contain large amounts of nutrients, antioxidants and fibre and are often low in calories. The problem with salads is that without some added flavor, they will often taste bland and will do very little to satisfy hunger. Because of this salad dressings are often added to improve taste. The problem with this is that most commercial-salad dressings are made from extremely harmful ingredients like soybean oil, canola oil, sugar and high fructose corn syrup. These ingredients are not only calorie dense, but also wreak havoc on the metabolism and the body in general. FAT STORING FOOD #9 – FRUIT JUICE It’s very common to rationalize that fruit juice is a “healthy” option because, after all, it does come from fruit. This isn’t always the case. Often times the “fruit juice” you see on the shelves contains very little actual fruit, and contains lots of sugar and other chemicals that are designed to taste like fruit.

However, even if you do find 100% fruit juice, it’s not a good idea to make a habit out of drinking it. The reason for this is that the process of extracting the juice from the fruit often leaves out the beneficial aspects of the fruit, while concentrating the sugar content.

Whole fruits do contain some sugar, but the sugar is bound within the fibre of the fruit, which means that the sugar takes longer to enter the blood stream as it requires more processing inside the body. However with fruit juice, there is no fibre or anything else that will stop you from consuming a large amount of concentrated and fast-absorbing sugar in a matter of seconds. FAT STORING FOOD #10 – DIET SOFT DRINKS One of the common changes a person will make when deciding to lose weight is the swap from sugar-sweetened soft drinks to diet soft drinks. This may seem logical as by doing so you are reducing both sugar and overall caloric intake, the science shows that this isn’t an effective strategy, as studies have shown that people who replace sugary soft drinks with diet soda don’t end up losing weight (8). FAT STORING FOOD #12 – TRAIL MIXES Trail mixes typically consist of dried fruits, nuts, some grains and sometimes chocolate. While many trail mixes don’t contain overly harmful ingredients such as harmful oils and added sugars, they are still a very calorie dense snack. The dried fruits contain a lot of concentrated sugar and the nuts are densely packed with fats. If you’re going to be using all these calories, such as when hiking or playing sports, trail mixes can be great.

However if you’re not going to be participating in high-energy activities and are going about your day as usual, you will most likely end up storing the extra calories as fat. Trail mixes are generally high in both carbs and fat, which is a very

FAT STORING FOOD #13 – ORGANIC PROCESSED

FOODS While organic foods are generally beneficial and the preferred option to non-organic foods, many processed organic foods are marketed as being “healthy” when in reality are the complete opposite. The problem with organic processed foods is that they often contain high amounts of organic sugar, which may be slightly better than regular sugar, but as far as your body weight is concerned - they are exactly the same thing. This is because organic sugar is processed exactly the same in your body as regular sugar. Meaning that it will spike insulin and cause your body to go into fat storing mode just as regular sugar will. Many people fall victim to thinking that because they are eating “organic sugar” they can eat as much of it as they want, when in reality it causes their blood sugar and insulin levels to spike just the same as if they were consuming regular sugar. FOODS I find it amusing the extent many food companies will go to have you believe that their product is “healthy”.

Avoiding gluten is something that many of us are aware of and trying to do these days, and big food companies are taking advantage of this by releasing gluten-free alternatives to the market, often with a false “halo of heath” slapped on the packaging. The problem in this case is that just because something is gluten free, doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Especially with processed foods, despite the absence of gluten, these foods often contain large amounts of refined carbs, sugars, harmful oils and other chemicals common to processed foods.

If you are trying to stay away from gluten, only eat foods that are naturally gluten free like plants and organic meats, not processed gluten free foods. Gluten free junk food is still junk food.
