Do Now: Why can’t you see an apple in the dark?Answer:

In order to have sight, there must be visible light. First, there must be a light source that is giving off the light waves. Then, these waves must be reflected off of an opaque object, such as an apple. An opaque object reflects and absorbs light waves. They do not transmit any light. The light waves that are reflected enter the eye where they hit the rods and cones.

Notes: Color of Opaque Objects p. 48 1.What is an opaque object? Anything that REFLECTS/ABSORBS light Anything that is not invisible has a color • My examples (name and color):

1. My apple is red. 2. 3.

You Do #1 :“Besides being different colors, how are the light waves similar and different from each

other???”

3. What determines the color of an opaque object?

1. The material the object is

made out of

THE COLOR OF THE OBJECT

2. The color of the light striking it

You Do #2-- Why is one apple red and the others are green? What causes

the difference? (on page 14L)

4. How does the material of the object affect its color???--not all colors have the same WAVELENGTH (RedViolet)--some colors are ABSORBED, other colors are REFLECTED this depends on what the object is made out of

KEY IDEA: THE COLOR OF THE OBJECT WE SEE IS THE COLOR THAT THE OBJECT REFLECTS INTO OUR EYESWe don’t see the other 6 colors because they were ABSORBED by the opaque object!!!

What color is reflected by the leaf? GREEN

What colors are absorbed by the leaf?THE OTHER 6 COLORS!!!

You Do #3: What color light is REFLECTED by…a. red apple

b. white spider

b. black spider

LIGHT SOURCE

EYE with rods and cones

Absorbs other 6 colors

White light strikes the apple

Red light reflected into the eye

White light strikes the spider

All white light reflected to eyeWhite light strikes the spider

No colors are reflected!!!

All colors are absorbed!!!

No colors are absorbed!!
