Name 3 characteristics of a tragedy1-The play must concern a serious subject.2-The tragedy must befall a conspicuous person; the character must be a great figure or

one that is representative of a higher class. The tragic hero falls from a high place. 3-There must be a contrast between previous happiness and/or glory and fate met. 4-The calamities do not simply “happen” nor are they “sent”; they proceed mainly from

the actions of men. Shakespeare’s tragic heroes are responsible for their own catastrophes. The incidents must be absolutely honest and without the element of coincidence or chance. What should happen must happen.
