HEAVERS FARM and SELSDON PRIMARY SCHOOLS PARENT AND CARER LEARNING NEWSLETTER Year: 5 Spring Term 1 2017 Dear Parents and Carers, On the other side of this leaflet is a topic map, which shows all of the areas of the curriculum your child has been and will be learning this half term. Please spend some time discussing the areas of the topic map with your child. Your child should be able to guide you through the topic map but if you have any queries please feel free to ask me. Please remember: We have P.E. every Thursday and Friday. Please ensure that on these days your child enters school in the correct P.E. Kit. Children are able to wear either shorts or tracksuit bottoms to school with their PE kit; if you are concerned that your child will be too hot/cold in shorts or tracksuit bottoms, you can always send them in with shorts or tracksuit bottoms in their bag, or wearing their shorts under their tracksuit bottoms, so they can change if they need to. They are then to wear their house colour t-shirt for P.E. Homework: The children are set homework each Friday and need to return it by the following Wednesday. Homework is an important activity that reinforces learning in school. Doing this homework also teaches children about responsibility for their own learning. This also includes reading every day and recording this reading in the reading diary. Please make every effort to encourage and aid your child to complete and hand it in on time each week. Ways you can help your child reach their full potential: In the reading diaries, there are now key spellings. These include the national curriculum spelling words for year 5 and 6. By helping them learn these, it can also help them introduce exciting language within their literacy. Practise their times tables regularly. Read with your child and try to ask them questions about the story/text that they have read. Times Tables are another key focus within year 5 and we ask you to encourage

EnglishUse a class text (How to Train a Dragon) and an animated tale to plan and write a range of both fiction and non-fiction texts.

MathematicsTo investigate properties of shape and learn how to interpret a range of graphs.

ScienceTo understand and describe the movement of the Earth, and other planets, relative to the solar system. Using the understanding of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night.

COMPUTINGContinue to gain a greater understanding of how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.

HistoryTo gain a greater understanding of significant eras in time, with a greater focus on Britain’s settlement by the Anglo-Saxons.

GeographyWe will not be teaching geography through topic this term.

P.E. and GamesTo build our fitness and begin developing skills towards playing tag Hockey.

MusicTo develop aural memory through vocal improvisation, composition, and performance.
