Christmas is a religious festival, which celebrates the birthday of Jesus. During Christmas time, people will exchange gifts and send Christmas cards to each other. Christmas trees are decorated at homes, with all kinds of presents and candles and flowers, and a big star on the top of it. In the shopping centers, special decorations are also put up, and artificial snow painted on shop windows.

Christmas carols are sung and played everywhere. Families get reunited and delicious food are enjoyed. Typical Christmas dinners are composed of roast turkey and Christmas pudding and salad and so on. Christmas is also a great time for children. The hung up stockings at the end of the bed, waiting for Santa Claus, who rides a sleigh full of presents, to give good wishes and put the gifts they have wished into their stockings.

3. Directions: Why do you think Christmas is so popular around the world nowadays? Work with your partners and talk about the possible reasons.

There are many factors that may contribute to the popularity of Christmas. To name a few: It is a religious holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. It’s no wonder that it’s so popular in the Christian world. On this day people would take part in special religious services.

Page 10: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 8 Holidays 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

Learn to CommunicateLearn to Communicate

It’s an international holiday. Christmas brought its customs from many different cultures and slowly grew into what it is today. The history of Christmas, the legend of Santa Claus, the custom of hanging up stockings, all can be traced back to cultures other than British or American. It is German tradition to dress the Christmas trees. The presents given symbolize the gifts that the wise men (the Magi) brought to Jesus. So it is not unfamiliar to people in other countries. They can always celebrate the holiday a little differently in their own ways.

Page 11: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 8 Holidays 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

Christmas is also a great time for family reunion. People like to travel the distance just to be together with their families. It’s a time to be nice and give presents, and show their kindness. To children, it’s a lot of fun, and a time for delicious food and to receive gifts. People of all ages would like to take time off from work at the end of the year and enjoy themselves.

There’s another reason for its increasing popularity, particularly in some of the traditionally non-Christmas countries, that is, the advertising by the businesses. It is a time for the stores and businessmen to realize big sales and make profits. They begin their sales promotions weeks before the occasion.

Long before Christ was born, people used to celebrate the winter solstice as the birthday of the sun. This time of the year was a holiday in many parts of the world before it became the Christmas celebration. The custom of giving presents during Christmas goes back to the ancient Romans. In the Bible, the wise men brought gifts to Jesus on the 12th day after his birth. And so in some countries, the children receive their presents not on Christmas, but 12 days later. In some of the northern countries of Europe, the gifts are exchanged almost three weeks before Christmas.

The reason for this is that the gifts are supposed to be brought in by Saint Nicholas on the eve of his feast day, December the 6th. Saint Nicholas was a bishop of the 4th century who came to be regarded as a special friend of the children. So in various countries around the world Saint Nicholas returns every year with gifts for good children. When the Dutch came to New York, they brought the traditions of Saint Nicholas with them. They called him “San Nicholas.” And this soon was changed to “Sankt Klaus”, and then Santa Claus. But in America the date of Santa Claus’s arrival was moved to Christmas eve. And gradually his red costume, the reindeer, and his home at the North Pole became part of the tradition.

Christmas

Para. 1 Para. 2Para. 3 Para. 4Para. 5

Page 48: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 8 Holidays 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

In England, Christmas is the most important of all the “Bank Holidays” in the year. Two important things, apart from its religious significance, help to set this holiday apart from all others: the custom of giving gifts and the habit of spending it with the family.

Paragraph 1

1

Page 49: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 8 Holidays 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

In the present highly commercialized age we are reminded of Christmas many weeks before the event. In the shops the special Christmas displays appear and outside them the special Christmas decorations. In the shopping centers of very large towns decorations are put up in the streets. In London thousands of people flock into the center of the town to see the decorations in Oxford Street, Regent Street, Piccadilly and elsewhere. The advertisements in all the newspapers remind us repeatedly that there are“Only x more shopping days to Christmas”.

Paragraph 2-1

2

Page 50: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 8 Holidays 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

The Post Office vans are covered with brightly colored posters tempting us to“Post Earl, for Christmas” , for hundreds of millions of Christmas cards and millions of parcels are sent every year. Everywhere one turns, one is made aware that Christmas, which comes“but once a year”, is coming once again.

Paragraph 2-2

3

Page 51: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 8 Holidays 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

Many people feel sorry for what they consider the over-commercialization of a sacred holiday, but, underneath all the business activity, a great deal of genuine Christmas spirit is to be found. The custom of giving presents to one’s family and friends is a very pleasant one so long as one remembers that it is the spirit behind the gift which matters most and not the gift itself. And how good it is at Christmas to return to the family home and meet parents, grandparents and as many aunts, uncles and cousins as can be accommodated. Without twentieth-century means of transport, many families would be denied the Christmas reunion.

Paragraph 3

4

Page 52: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 8 Holidays 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

On Christmas Eve, the traditional ritual of hanging up a stocking at the foot of the bed is performed by millions of excited children. During the day the Christmas tree will have been decorated. All is now ready for the great morning, which comes round soon enough, in spite of the efforts of many of the younger children to stay awake until Santa Claus ( or Father Christmas, as some call him ) steals in to deliver the presents they have asked him for.

Paragraph 4

5

Page 53: 任务一 Learn to Communicate Unit 8 Holidays 任务二 Text Learning 任务三 Exercises

Christmas Day is spent quietly at home. The excitement of all the presents is hardly over before it is time for the traditional Christmas dinner: turkey, duck or chicken with rich fruity Christmas pudding afterwards. At tea-time the crackers are pulled. The evening is spent in games, merriment and more eating and drinking. There is always Boxing Day ( the Bank Holiday after Christmas Day ) on which to recover, if all the excitement and food have proved a little too much.
